Carclaze is a suburb of the town of St Austell in mid-Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The suburb forms part of the civil parish of Treverbyn and gives its name to the china clay works to the north.Carclaze mine produced tin and china clay for over 400 years. The tin ore is intermixed with shorl and quartz and is quarried rather than mined, with the whole rock crushed and washed to separate the tin. The mine was worked exclusively for tin until 1851 when china clay was also quarried. Following the collapse of the price of tin in the 1860s, Carclaze continued to produce china clay and in 1873 the circumference of the pit was over 1 mile (1.6 km), 150 feet (46 m) deep and covered about 12 acres (4.9 ha).

St Austell railway station

Menacuddle

Menacuddle is a historic place, holy well and wooded area in St Austell, Cornwall, UK.The holy well was built in the 15th century and restored by Admiral Sir Charles John Graves-Sawle shortly after the First World War in memory of his son who was killed in action. It is a popular spot with ramblers. Its name is recorded as Menequidel in 1250 and Menedcudel in 1284 and comes from the Old Cornish mened and cuydel and it means hillside with a small wood. The name does not include a saint's name, and there was no St Guidel. The site has also been known as Pinni-menny.It is said that if a person drops a pin into the well and makes a wish, that wish will be granted. The woods have a reputation for being haunted, with sightings of a "huge black beast" there. The site is a monument scheduled under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979, NHLE list number 1019163.

Parnall's Canal

Parnall's Canal was a half mile long canal that was built in Cornwall in about 1720 near St Austell. It was closed due to a rock slide in about 1732. It was one of only five canals to be built in Cornwall, the others being the St. Columb Canal from Mawgan Porth to St. Columb, the Liskeard & Looe Union Canal, the Par Canal from Pontsmill to Par, and the Bude Canal.

Restormel

Restormel (Cornish: Rostorrmel) was a borough of Cornwall, England, one of the six administrative divisions that made up the county. Its council was based in St Austell; its other towns included Newquay. The borough was named after Restormel Castle. It was formed on 1 April 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, by a merger of the borough of St. Austell with Fowey, Newquay urban district and St Austell Rural District. The name Restormel comes from Cornish, meaning the king's tower hill.The motto of the borough, in Cornish, is Ro an mor hag an tyr, meaning "From the sea and from the land". It recognises the borough's connection with the sea (fishing and tourism) and the land (china clay and agriculture). St Austell, the largest settlement in Cornwall, did not have a Parish/Town Council. The district was abolished as part of the 2009 structural changes to local government in England on 1 April 2009.
