Trevilians, Virginia

The Battle of Trevilian Station (also called Trevilians) was fought on June 11–12, 1864, in Union Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Campaign against Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Union cavalry under Maj. Gen. Philip Sheridan fought against Confederate cavalry under Maj. Gens. Wade Hampton and Fitzhugh Lee in the bloodiest and largest all-cavalry battle of the war. Sheridan's objectives for his raid were to destroy stretches of the Virginia Central Railroad, provide a diversion that would occupy Confederate cavalry from understanding Grant's planned crossing of the James River, and link up with the army of Maj. Gen. David Hunter at Charlottesville. Hampton's cavalry beat Sheridan to the railroad at Trevilian Station and on June 11 they fought to a standstill. Brig. Gen. George A. Custer entered the Confederate rear area and captured Hampton's supply train, but soon became surrounded and fought desperately to avoid destruction. On June 12, the cavalry forces clashed again to the northwest of Trevilian Station, and seven assaults by Brig. Gen. Alfred T. A. Torbert's Union division were repulsed with heavy losses. Sheridan withdrew his force to rejoin Grant's army. The battle was a tactical victory for the Confederates and Sheridan failed to achieve his goal of permanently destroying the Virginia Central Railroad or of linking up with Hunter. Its distraction, however, may have contributed to Grant's successful crossing of the James River.

Boxley Place is a historic home located at Louisa, Louisa County, Virginia. The original house was built in 1860, as an Italianate/Greek Revival-style dwelling. It was enlarged and remodeled in 1918 by architect D. Wiley Anderson in the Colonial Revival-style. It is a two-story, brick dwelling with large rear and side additions. The front facade features a two-story portico supported by Ionic order columns, with Chinese Chippendale railings. Also on the property are a contributing log house and well.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.

Louisa County Courthouse is a historic courthouse building located at Louisa, Louisa County, Virginia. It was designed by architect D. Wiley Anderson from Richmond and built in 1905. It is a two-story, five-bay, porticoed Classical Revival brick structure. It measures 59 feet wide and 63 feet deep and features a pedimented portico supported by four Ionic order columns. It has a modified hipped roof topped by an octagonal drum, dome and lantern. Associated with the courthouse is the contributing old jail built in 1818, and rebuilt in 1868 after a fire; the Crank Building (1830); R. Earl Ogg Memorial Building (1917); and a Civil War monument.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

Louisa (originally named Louisa Court House) is a town in Louisa County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,555 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Louisa County.

Blue Ridge Shores is a census-designated place (CDP) in Louisa County, Virginia, United States. The population as of the 2020 census was 801. It was built beginning in 1960 as a resort community around Lake Louisa.

Louisa High School is a historic high school building located at Louisa, Louisa County, Virginia. It was designed by noted Richmond architect Charles M. Robinson and built in 1907, as a 1 1/2-story, stone building. About 1916, a second story was added along with an auditorium addition to the rear. Early in 1924 a fire gutted the building, leaving only the granite walls. It was rebuilt in its two-story configuration in 1925. The school served as an elementary school after 1940, and closed in 1987. The building was restored starting in 2002, and reopened in 2006 as a town hall, art gallery, and performing arts center.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.

Bloomington is a historic home located at Louisa, Louisa County, Virginia. The dwelling evolved into its present form from an original two-room, split-log dwelling dating to about 1790. The main block was built about 1832, and is a two-story, three-bay structure with steeply-pitched gable roof constructed over a raised brick basement. A one-story, gable-roofed addition was attached to the north wall of the main block about 1900. The house is a rare example of 18th-to-early-19th-century English frame construction which found expression in early Southern Colonial style. Also on the property are a contributing tobacco barn, horse barn, corn crib, and tool shed.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Black Meadow (now known as "Wolftrap Farm") is a historic plantation house and farm complex located near Gordonsville, Orange County, Virginia. The house was built in 1856, and is a 1+1⁄2-story, three-bay, Greek Revival style dwelling with a front gable roof. It was renovated in 1916, with the addition of a two-story wood-frame ell and realignment of interior spaces. Also on the property are the contributing milk house (c. 1916), slave quarters (c. 1856), a dairy barn (c. 1943), a bent barn/stable (c. 1856), a multiuse barn/shed (c. 1856), and a tenant house (c. 1943).Black Meadow was one of the outlying farms owned and cultivated by James and Dolley Madison, whose Montpelier home lies just a few miles northwest. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.The farm, known since the mid-1970s as Wolftrap Farm, is now operated as a wedding and events venue and seven homes on the farm are available as vacation rentals.

Living Energy Farm, or "LEF", is a zero fossil fuel intentional community of seven adult members plus two children (as of 2022) on 127 acres in rural Louisa County, Virginia, United States. The farm is an Ally Community with the Federation of Egalitarian Communities. It is nine miles from Twin Oaks Community, which helped support LEF when it was being founded.

Longwood is a historic home located at Gordonsville, Louisa County, Virginia. It was built about 1859, and is a two-story, three-bay, frame dwelling in the Greek Revival style. It features a low-pitched hipped roof and two interior brick chimneys. Also on the property is a contributing historic brick well.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
