Akiruno, Tokyo

Akigawa (秋川市, Akigawa-shi) was a city located in the western portion of Tokyo Metropolis, Japan. On April 1, 1889, the villages of Higashiakiru, Nishiakiru, Kusabana, Sugao, Sedooka and Harakomiya were established within Nishitama District, then a portion of Kanagawa Prefecture. The entire district was transferred to the administrative control of Tokyo Metropolis on April 1, 1893. On April 1, 1921, Kusabana, Sugao, Sedooka and Harakomiya merged to form Tasai Village and on April 1, 1955, Higashiakiru, Nishiakiru and Tasai merged to form Akita Town. Akita was elevated to city status on May 5, 1972, at which time it renamed itself Akigawa City. In 1995, the town of Itsukaichi merged with Akigawa to form the new city of Akiruno, and thus no longer exists as an independent municipality. At the time of its merger, the city had an estimated population of 54,654 and a density of 2,435 persons per km². The total area was 22.44 km².

Akikawa Kyūryō Prefectural Natural Park (都立秋川丘陵自然公園, Toritsu Akikawa Kyūryō shizen kōen) is a Prefectural Natural Park in Tokyo, Japan. Established in 1953, it is in the foothills on the right bank of the Aki River (秋川). It is adjacent to the Chichibu Tama Kai National Park and Takiyama Prefectural Natural Park.

The Aki River (also, the Akikawa River) is a river in Japan. The Aki River flows west of Tokyo Metropolitan Area. It is a major tributary of the Tama River, The Japanese name, 秋川, means "Autumn River."The words Akigawa River sound a bit odd, as kawa and gawa, 川, are Japanese words for river, so Aki River makes more sense, or simply Akigawa, perhaps Akikawa.

Itsukaichi (五日市町, Itsukaichi-machi) was a town located in Nishitama District, Tokyo Metropolis, Japan. Itsukaichi Town, a medieval settlement, was promoted to town status within Kanagawa Prefecture in 1879, and merged with Konakano Village on April 1, 1889. The entire district was transferred to the administrative control of Tokyo Metropolis on April 1, 1893. The town expanded through annexation of the neighboring villages of Mitsusato and Meiji in 1918, and with Masuko, Tokura and Komiya in 1955. In 1995, the town of Itsukaichi merged with the city of Akigawa to form the new city of Akiruno, and thus no longer exists as an independent municipality. At the time of its merger, the town had an estimated population of 22,252 and a density of 437 persons per km2. The total area was 50.90 km2.

As of 1 April 2021, the city had an estimated population of 56,786, and a population density of 5600 persons per km². The total area of the city is 10.16 square kilometres (3.92 sq mi). About one third of the city area is occupied by the United States Air Force Yokota Air Base, giving the city an effective population density of 8,782 persons per km2.
