Wheeling Historic District

Centre Market Square Historic District is a historic district in Wheeling, West Virginia, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The district includes 181 contributing buildings in a variety of popular architectural styles dating from as early as about 1850. The district encompasses the area of Wheeling focused on the separately listed Center Wheeling Market. Notable buildings include the Second Presbyterian Church (1850), St. Alphonsus Church and School (1875, 1887), Mary A. Reed Building (c. 1885), Shaefer Building (1887), Bellinger Building (c. 1885), Schmeichel Building (c. 1900), Zink House (c. 1878), Lotz Building (c. 1873), Thoner House (c. 1877), Wheeling Public Library (1911), German Evangelical Lutheran Zion's Church (c. 1850, now Oglebay Institute-Towngate Theatre), 2333 Eoff Street (c. 1870–1900), 2227 Eoff Street (c. 1900–1915), 2330 Chapline Street (c. 1876), 2318 Chapline Street (c. 1901), townhouses on Chapline Street, (c. 1870s), 2325 Chapline Street, 2241 Chapline Street, 2233 Chapline Street, the Hellenic Orithodox Church of St. John the Divine (c. 1949–1951), St. John's United Church of Christ (c. 1907–1908), Michel Building (c. 1860–1870), Wheeling Fire Company-Hook and Ladder #6 (late 1870s-1880s), and the "Iron Building" (c. 1867).It was listed on the National Register in 1984, with a boundary increase in 1987.

Chapline Street Row Historic District is a national historic district located at Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. The district encompasses 10 contributing buildings, including eight residences. All buildings are brick with sandstone foundations. The first building was built in 1853, with some buildings added through the 1870s, and the last in 1896. The houses are in the Late Victorian style and are considered an architectural "super block."It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Wheeling Warehouse Historic District is a national historic district located at Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. The district includes 20 contributing buildings and 11 contributing structures. They are warehouses and commercial style buildings and structures between Main Street and the Ohio River. All of the buildings date to the late-19th and early-20th century. The warehouses are mostly two- and three-story masonry buildings. The two-story commercial buildings have storefronts on the first floor and residential units above. Notable buildings and structures include the Pump Store (1933), Wheeling Stamping Plant (1932), Allied Plate Glass (c. 1920), Warwick China (c. 1887), Boury Warehouse (c. 1894), Ott-Heiskell Company (c. 1871), Edward Wagner Wholesale Grocers building (1915), the Moderne style former Greyhound Bus Station, and Main Street Bridge (1891).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, with a boundary increase in 2022.

The Center Wheeling Market is a historic public market located along Market Street between 22nd and 23rd Streets in Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. It consists of the Center Wheeling Market building as well as the Center Wheeling Fish Market. The 1853 Center Wheeling Market building was designed by architect Thomas Pope as an open market. The building is of neo-classical style with three bays and structural cast iron Doric order columns. It has a gable roof and features a belfry complete with bell. The 1890 open brick, neo-Romanesque section was designed by Wheeling architect Edward B. Franzheim. It has brick piers that support a hipped roof with cross gables and a three-foot overhang. In 1900, a wooden enclosure was built at the northern bay to house the Center Wheeling Fish Market.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places for Ohio County on February 20, 1975. The property is also located in the Centre Market Square Historic District.

Ohio Valley Medical Center (OVMC) was a 200-bed health care facility in Wheeling, West Virginia. It was founded in 1890 as City Hospital. Ohio Valley General Hospital School of Nursing was established on campus in 1892, and was the first school of nursing in the state of West Virginia. OVMC was affiliated with the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, and had an osteopathic medicine residency program. The residency program offered residencies in internal medicine, emergency medicine, and traditional internal/emergency medicine fields. OVMC was also home to the OVMC School of Radiologic Technology, a two-year hospital based education program. The hospital closed permanently in September 2019.

Robert W. Hazlett House is a historic home located at Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. It was built in 1887, and is a three-story Second Empire style brick residence measuring 30 feet (9.1 m) wide and 112 feet (34 m) deep. It features a central hooded bay and a polychrome slate-covered mansard roof. The interior has many Queen Anne style details. In 1991, it housed Friends of Wheeling, Inc., a private, non-profit, historic preservation organization and four apartments.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

Wheeling station is a U.S. historic train station located at Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. It was built in 1907–1908, and is a four-story, rectangular brick and limestone building in the Beaux-Arts-style. It measures 250 feet long by 89 feet, 6 inches, deep. It features mansard roofs, built of concrete and covered with Spanish tile painted pink. Passenger service ceased in 1961. The building was remodeled in 1976 to house the West Virginia Northern Community College.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996 as the Wheeling Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Passenger Station.

West Virginia Northern Community College (WVNCC) is a public community college with its main campus in downtown Wheeling, West Virginia. Established in 1972, WVNCC serves all six counties in West Virginia's Northern Panhandle. It is part of the West Virginia Community and Technical College System. The main campus is housed in the former Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Terminal at Wheeling. It also has branch campuses in Weirton, West Virginia and in New Martinsville, West Virginia.

The siege of Fort Henry was an attack on American militiamen during the American Revolutionary War near the Virginia outpost known as Fort Henry by a mixed band of Indians in September 1777. The fort, named for Virginia Governor Patrick Henry, was at first defended by only a small number of militia, as rumors of the Indian attack had moved faster than the Indians, and a number of militia companies had left the fort. The American settlers were successful in repulsing the Indian attack.

Fort Henry was a colonial fort which stood about ¼ mile from the Ohio River in what is now downtown, Wheeling, West Virginia. The fort was originally known as Fort Fincastle and was named for Viscount Fincastle, Lord Dunmore, Royal Governor of Virginia. Later it was renamed for Patrick Henry, and was at the time located in Virginia. The fort was subject to two major sieges, two notable feats (McColloch's Leap and Betty Zane's trek through the battle) and other skirmishes.

Wheeling Creek is a tributary of the Ohio River, 25 miles (40 km) long, in the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia in the United States, with a watershed extending into southwestern Pennsylvania. Via the Ohio River, it is part of the watershed of the Mississippi River, draining an area of approximately 300 square miles (780 km2) on the unglaciated portion of the Allegheny Plateau. It flows into the Ohio River in downtown Wheeling, just downstream of Ohio's Wheeling Creek on the opposite bank. A variant name is Big Wheeling Creek. According to the French explorer Pierre Joseph Céloron de Blainville, the native name of the stream is the Kanououara River, as was inscribed on the lead plate buried at the mouth by the Ohio River in 1749.

The second siege of Fort Henry took place from September 11 to 13, 1782, during the American Revolutionary War. A force of about 300 Wyandot, Shawnee, Seneca and Lenape laid siege to Fort Henry, an American outpost at what is now Wheeling, West Virginia, accompanied by a force of 50 Loyalist soldiers from Butler's Rangers, a provincial military unit. The siege is commonly known as "The Last Battle of the Revolutionary War," despite subsequent skirmishes between Patriots and Loyalists involving the loss of life taking place in New Jersey later in 1782. However, these were unorganized outbreaks of fighting between patrons with opposing sentiments rather than engagements between sovereign powers and their allies.
