Port Gamble, Washington

Little Boston is a community in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. It is located on the east side of Port Gamble, an inlet or bay of Hood Canal, and is direct across the bay from the unincorporated community of Port Gamble. Little Boston is within the Port Gamble Indian Reservation, which houses the Port Gamble band of the S'Klallam tribe. The Port Gamble S'Klallam Reservation consists of 1,340 acres (5 km2) of land held in trust by the federal government. There is no private land ownership on the reservation. Most of the land is in the forest with residential, business, and office areas. The land is listed by the U.S. Census Bureau as the Port Gamble Tribal Community census-designated place, with a population of 916 as of the 2010 census.The reservation receives approximately 20 inches (510 mm) of rain per year due to its location in the Olympic Mountain rain shadow. The reservation lands rise from the beach to gently rolling terrain. Port Gamble Bay is the last bay in Kitsap County that is still open for commercial shellfish harvest. The Tribe has a hatchery on Middle Creek. Bear, deer, and other wildlife also live on the reservation.

Port Gamble Forest Heritage Park is a 3,493-acre (1,414 ha) county park founded in 2014, and is the largest in Kitsap County, Washington. It contains 60 miles (97 km) of trails.The park property was acquired from Pope Resources/Olympic Resource Management, a forestry company, partly in direct purchases by the county government, and partly by the Forterra land conservation non-profit corporation who raised funds through individual donations and grants.Olympic Resource Management's Olympic Property Group proposed a public trail system in its Port Gamble property c. 2007. Invoking the Olmsted Brothers park planning, local groups envisioned a regional "String of Pearls" trail plan c. 2011 in the Pacific Northwest linking water trails linking the Olympic National Park on the Olympic Peninsula with the Kitsap Peninsula. A proposed system, the Sound to Olympics Trail, would allow one to cross Washington State by foot on a continuous trail system from the Pacific Ocean to the Idaho border. Kitsap County plans to embody a portion of the Sound to Olympics Trail in the Port Gamble Forest.

The Hood Canal Bridge (officially William A. Bugge Bridge) is a floating bridge in the northwest United States, located in western Washington. It carries State Route 104 across Hood Canal in Puget Sound and connects the Olympic and Kitsap Peninsulas. At 7,869 feet (1.490 mi; 2.398 km) in length (floating portion 6,521 feet (1.235 mi; 1.988 km)), it is the longest floating bridge in the world located in a saltwater tidal basin, and the third longest floating bridge overall. It opened in 1961 and was the second concrete floating bridge constructed in Washington. Since that time, it has become a vital link for local residents, freight haulers, commuters, and recreational travelers. The convenience it provides has had a major impact on economic development, especially in eastern Jefferson County.The bridge is officially named after William A. Bugge (1900–1992), the director of the Department of Highways from 1949 to 1963, who was a leader in the planning and construction of the bridge.

Point Hannon, also known as Whiskey Spit, is a 7.7-acre (31,000 m2) sand spit with 1,775 feet (541 m) of no-bank shoreline, jutting out from the eastern edge of Hood Head, in the Hood Canal of the state of Washington. For surface navigation, Point Hannon is marked by a light. The low sandy spit with shoal water extends about 600 feet (180 m) east of the light. The open waters to the North of the spit, are among the deepest in Puget Sound. Local magnetic disturbances of more than 2° from normal variation have been observed in Hood Canal at Point Hannon. Whiskey Spit has been a meeting point for native peoples, mariners, fishers, and loggers for hundreds of years. Port Gamble S'Klallam, Jamestown S'Klallam and Lower Elwha Klallam members tell of Tribal Gatherings, ceremonies, and ancestral canoe burials, as well as regular trapping, hunting, and fishing endeavors going back far beyond the first documented visits made by European explorers to Point Hannon in the 1790s, and continuing to the present day. Shanghaied crew aboard inbound clippers, loggers, and other freighters were waylaid at Whiskey Spit so that they would not escape, and they were replaced by Native crews for the remainder of the sail into Puget Sound and back. At peaks in logging and wartime military activity, Whiskey Spit has functioned as billet, brothel, speakeasy, and casino. Artifacts and relics should not be removed from the site. Whiskey Spit offers panoramic views of the Cascade Mountains, stretching from Mount Baker to Mount Rainier. With its sand dollar colony, moon snails, food sources for threatened salmon, and sea lion, harbor seal, gray whale, orca whale, harbor porpoise, bottlenose dolphin, muskrat, and river otter visitors, the spit is one of Washington's most special protected shorelines. The delicate freshwater marsh on the point provides the unique habitat requirements for the unusually wide range of nesting shore birds, migrating waterfowl, reptiles and amphibians, prey for the osprey, eagle, heron, and raven populations, and the essential foods for the plentiful sand lance and surf smelt. In May 2002, The Trust for Public Land conveyed the property to the Washington State Park System for permanent protection. A water access primitive campground was planned for state park land on Point Hannon, but the Friends of Point Hannon, North Olympic Salmon Coalition, Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team, Admiralty Audubon, Washington State Audubon Society, supporters of the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, and Northwest Water Resources oppose the conditional use permit and oppose exemption under the Jefferson County Shoreline Master Program.

Heronswood is a botanical garden located in Kingston, Washington, in the Northwestern United States. It is also the name for a now defunct mail order specialty plant nursery business that originated at the gardens.

Coon Bay, also known as Sheltered Bay, is a small, nearly landlocked harbor, which opens to the Hood Canal about 2.5 miles south of Foulweather Bluff. Although non-member space is limited, the harbor offers excellent protection for small boats during periods of rough weather. The privately dredged entrance channel is narrow and has a reported controlling depth of about 3 feet. There are several private piers inside the entrance. It lies near the town of Hansville, Washington, adjacent to a group of subdivisions generally called "Driftwood Key" or "Driftwood Keys". The bay was originally dredged from a marshy estuary in 1963 in order to facilitate recreational boat access to Coon Bay and residential development. Prior to the development, it was a private duck and black brant hunting area. Over a dozen subdivisions were eventually platted, with both shoreline and upland residential lots. The area is the location of the "Driftwood Key Club", which provides its members with access to the private marina, boat launch, swimming pool and clubhouse.

Shine Tidelands State Park is a 249-acre (101 ha) Washington state park located in Jefferson County, seven miles (11 km) south of Port Ludlow. The park has 5,000 feet (1,500 m) of shoreline on Bywater Bay adjacent to the west end of the Hood Canal Bridge and offers activities including picnicking, fishing, shellfish harvesting, beachcombing, birdwatching, windsurfing, and wildlife viewing. In 2014, the park was expanded to include the former Wolfe and Point Hannon properties.

Buck Lake is a small lake in unincorporated Kitsap County, Washington. The lake, near the unincorporated census-designated place of Hansville, occupies an area of 18.6 acres at a maximum depth of 24 feet. The lake takes its name from a buck, though the exact species it references is unclear. Bird species such as the Osprey and Great Blue Heron have been present at the lake. In 2009, the Kitsap County Planning and Environmental Programs division found an improving trend for E. coli bacteria levels. The Buck Lake County Park is located at the southeast corner of the lake, which has picnic areas, restrooms, beach access, volleyball and basketball courts, and a ball field. A new playground was completed in 2019, the Kitsap County Parks Department's first ADA-compliant playground. To the west and south of the lake is the Hansville Greenway, a 264-acre nature preserve with walking and equestrian trails in a wetland environment. The Greater Hansville Community Center is also located at the lake. Buck Lake is a swimming destination. All swimming lake beaches in the county, including Buck Lake, have free loaner life jackets for children. Like other county beaches, water quality is monitored by the Kitsap Public Health District every other week. The lake was staffed by lifeguards until 2006. Unlike other popular county lakes such as Island Lake and Horseshoe Lake, there are much fewer residences on Buck Lake and the watershed is described as "rural residential" and "rural wooded." Buck Lake is also known for rainbow trout fishing, with well over 1,400 fish being released annually by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Since 2018, the majority of fish released into Buck Lake have been raised at Eells State Trout Hatchery near Skokomish, WA. There is a gravel boat launch on the east shore of the lake.

Eglon is an unincorporated community in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The town has a community center, a church, a cemetery, a boat launch, a beach, and a picnic area. Its Fire Protection services are provided by North Kitsap Fire and Rescue.

Hansville is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. Its population was 3,858 as of the 2020 census. The coastal community is located at the northern end of the Kitsap Peninsula and is about 16 miles (26 km) northeast of Poulsbo, the nearest city.

Norwegian Point is low and rounding, about 0.2 mile northwest of Hansville, Washington in Kitsap County, Washington, located at the northern end of the Kitsap Peninsula, affording sweeping views of Admiralty Inlet, Whidbey Island, and Puget Sound. A conspicuous, privately owned lighthouse, Skunk Bay Lighthouse, is located 210 feet above the water about 1 mile west of Norwegian Point.

Kitsap Memorial State Park is a 63-acre (25 ha) public recreation area located on Hood Canal, seven miles (11 km) north of Poulsbo in Kitsap County, Washington. The state park offers 1,797 feet (548 m) of shoreline and activities that include picnicking, camping, hiking, scuba diving, fishing, swimming, clamming, crabbing, beachcombing, birdwatching, and field sports.
