Sweet Hall

Sweet Hall (also known as Sweethall) is an unincorporated community on the northern bank of the Pamunkey River in southeastern King William County, Virginia, United States. In none of the information easily available online about Sweet Hall is there mention that the owners were slaveholders, and that the structures were probably built and renovated by enslaved persons. Also, "outbuildings" were mentioned, but no mention was made of slave quarters, which surely existed. Enslaved persons were captive there until they followed the Union Army out of the area around 1863. Weevils in the Wheat was "an expression used by slaves to communicate to one another that their plans for a secret meeting or dance had been discovered and that the gathering was called off. The small community includes two properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places: Sweet Hall and Windsor Shades. The Sweet Hall Marsh (part of the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve) is located just south-southeast of the community.

Windsor Shades (also known as Ruffin's Ferry and Waterville) is located on the Pamunkey River in Sweet Hall, Virginia, United States. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Archeological native artifacts found on the property surrounding the house suggest it was the site of Kupkipcok, a Pamunkey village noted on John Smith's 1609 map.

Sweet Hall Marsh (also known as Sweethall Marsh) is a 353-hectare (870-acre) tidal marsh located on the northern edge of the Pamunkey River in southeastern King William County, Virginia, United States, just south-southeast of the unincorporated community of Sweet Hall. It is privately owned by the Tacoma Hunting and Fishing Club and is one of four components of the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. Due to its low elevation (0 feet [0 m]) and rising sea level, the marsh's fresh water ecosystem is in jeopardy.

Cohoke is an unincorporated community in King William County, Virginia, United States. It is the namesake and reported location of the Cohoke Light.

St. John's Church is a historic Episcopal church located near Sweet Hall, King William County, Virginia, United States. It was constructed in 1734 and is a one-story, T-shaped brick building. It measures 50 feet, 3 inches, by 20 feet, 2 inches, with a 24 feet wide, 28 feet, 9 inch, wing. St. John's is the only surviving colonial church in King William County to remain in the Episcopal charge. This church is also important in that it is associated with Carter Braxton, Signer of the Declaration of Independence, who regularly attended worship there. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Romancoke is an unincorporated community in King William County, Virginia, United States. Romancoke was a plantation initially developed by William Claiborne in the 17th century, and inherited by his burgess sons William Claiborne Jr. then Thomas Claiborne. Eventually, in the early 19th century, George Washington Parke Custis, father of Mary Anna Randolph Custis Lee (wife of Gen. Robert E. Lee) inherited Romancoke Plantation, as well as Arlington and White House Plantations. His will appointed Gen. Lee as executor, and directed him to manumit approximately 200 slaves within five years of his death (which happened in 1857). The American Civil War and Emancipation Proclamation intervened, but Gen. Lee fulfilled the clause by December, 1862. Lee's second son, Rooney Lee, managed both White House plantation and nearby Romancoke after resigning his U.S. Army commission. His youngest son, Robert E. Lee, Jr., inherited Romancoke and after the war took up residence (about four miles from West Point).

Chelsea is a historic home located near West Point, King William County, Virginia. It was built in 1709, and consists of a two-story, brick main block with a hipped roof and 1+1⁄2-story, gambrel roofed rear ell. In 1764, Thomas Jefferson attended the wedding of an old friend, John Walker, at Chelsea; sources commonly say (and Jefferson eventually, in 1805, seemed to acknowledge) that he later repeatedly made improper advances to his friend's wife, all of which she rejected. In 1781, shortly before the Battle of Yorktown, Lafayette's army camped at Chelsea, and the Marquis de Lafayette used the house as his headquarters. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969.

Cumberland Marsh Natural Area Preserve is a Natural Area Preserve located in New Kent County, Virginia, near the Cumberland Hospital Children-Adolescents. Owned by the Nature Conservancy, it preserves 1,095 acres (4.43 km2) of freshwater tidal marsh along the Pamunkey River, providing habitat for bald eagles, osprey, blue herons, and egrets, as well as for the sensitive joint-vetch. It is also an important habitat for wintering waterfowl.

Cumberland is a historic farm property at 9007 Cumberland Road in central northern New Kent County, Virginia. The property, now about 131 acres (53 ha), was once the centerpiece of a much larger plantation estate. The main house has a construction history dating to the 18th century, and includes a number of interior features from that period. The exterior is largely the product of a 1930s update of the property to a design by Harden de Valsen Pratt, a major restoration architect. Other historic elements of the property include a barn and the family cemetery of the Toler and Fauntleroy families, who owned the property for over a century. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.
