The Om (Russian: Омь) is a river in the south of the Western Siberian plains in Russia. It is a right tributary of the Irtysh. It is 1,091 kilometres (678 mi) long, and has a drainage basin of 52,600 square kilometres (20,300 sq mi). It rises in the Vasyugan Swamp at the border of Novosibirsk and Tomsk oblasts. The name is probably from the word om "quiet" in the language of the Baraba Tatars. The city of Omsk is situated at the confluence of Om and Irtysh. The main tributaries are the Icha, Kama and Tartas.

Omsk (; Russian: Омск, IPA: [omsk]) is the administrative center and largest city of Omsk Oblast, Russia. It is situated in southwestern Siberia and has a population of over 1.1 million. Omsk is the third largest city in Siberia after Novosibirsk and Krasnoyarsk, and the twelfth-largest city in Russia. It is an important transport node, serving as a train station for the Trans-Siberian Railway and as a staging post for the Irtysh River. During the Imperial era, Omsk was the seat of the Governor General of Western Siberia and, later, of the Governor General of the Steppes. For a brief period during the Russian Civil War in 1918–1920, it served as the capital of the anti-Bolshevik Russian State and held the imperial gold reserves. Omsk serves as the episcopal see of the bishop of Omsk and Tara, as well as the administrative seat of the Imam of Siberia. The mayor is Sergey Shelest.

The main tasks of the directorate are to ensure Public Safety, protect the Rights and Freedoms of Man and Citizen, combat Crime, maintain Public Order, and control migration processes. The head of the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia is appointed and dismissed by the President of the Russian Federation on the proposal of the Minister of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation. The Dormition Cathedral (Russian language: Успенский собор) in Omsk is one of the largest churches in Siberia. Its fanciful design of many shapes and colors utilizes a plethora of elements from the Russian and Byzantine medieval architectural vocabulary. The main square of Omsk takes its name from the cathedral. The first stone of a new church was laid by Tsesarevich Nicholas during his journey across Siberia in 1891. A revivalist design was commissioned from Ernest Würrich, a fashionable architect based in Saint Petersburg. The church was consecrated in 1898. It was shut down after the Russian Revolution and was blown up in 1935. The Russian Orthodox Church had the edifice rebuilt to Würrich's original designs in the early 21st century.The worshippers from all over Siberia come to the church in order to venerate the relics of Bishop Sylvester, a Kolchak supporter who was martyred by the Bolsheviks in 1920.

It was established as Omsk Law Institute on 24 February 1998 by the Fund for Social and Legal Protection of Graduates of the Omsk Higher Militia School, renamed in 2004 to the Fund for Assistance to Legal Education and Science. It was renamed in 2012 to Omsk Law Academy, and in 2019 to Siberian Law University. Dostoevsky Omsk State University (Омский государственный университет им. Ф. М. Достоевского), usually referred to as Omsk State University (Омский государственный университет) (OmSU) was founded in 1974 in the city of Omsk, Russia. The two original departments (Humanities and Science) and 40 professors have grown to 13 departments and a 1000-member faculty. The university has graduated more than 25,000 students. OmSU embraces its connections to the world and develops international relations with the universities of Europe, the United States, Mexico, Japan, China, Kazakhstan and other countries. Such cooperation led to the establishment of the Centers for Chinese, Kazakh and Ibero-American Studies which in its turn flows into the development of study and research abroad programs that provide the opportunity to conduct independent projects in a foreign country.

Akmolinsk Oblast was an oblast (province) of the Russian Empire. It roughly corresponded to most of present-day northern Kazakhstan and the southern part of Omsk Oblast in Russia. It was formerly part of Kazakh khanate. It was created after the division of the Oblast of Siberia Kyrgyz into the oblasts Aqmola and Semirechye on 21 October 1868. Its center was Omsk and consisted of uezds Akmolinsk, Atbasar, Kokchetav, Omsk and Petropavlovsk. It bordered Tobolsk Governorate to the north, Semipalatinsk Oblast to the east, Semirechye Oblast to the northeast, Syr-Darya Oblast to the south, Turgay Oblast to the southwest and Orenburg Governorate to the northwest.

Omsky District (Russian: О́мский райо́н) is an administrative and municipal district (raion), one of the thirty-two in Omsk Oblast, Russia. It is located in the southern central part of the oblast. The area of the district is 3,600 square kilometers (1,400 sq mi). Its administrative center is the rural locality (a settlement) of Rostovka. Population: 94,086 (2010 Census); 94,251 (2002 Census); 90,461 (1989 Census). The population of Rostovka accounts for 5.8% of the district's total population.
