Kingsand

St Paul's Church is a former Church of England church in Kingsand, Cornwall, England, UK. Built in 1881–82, the church ceased use as a place of worship after 1943 and is now used as the Maker with Rame Community Hall.

Cawsand (Cornish: Porthbugh; lit. Cow Cove) and Kingsand (Cornish: Porthruw) are twin villages in southeast Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The village is situated on the Rame Peninsula and is in the parish of Maker-with-Rame. Cawsand overlooks Plymouth Sound and adjoins Kingsand, formerly on the border of Devon and Cornwall (the border has since been moved and now is situated on the River Tamar). Cawsand has two public houses: the Cross Keys Inn on Armada Road, not trading and for sale in September 2022, and the Bay bar, overlooking Cawsand beach. Cawsand is within Mount Edgcumbe Country Park. There are frequent bus services to the city of Plymouth which is three miles to the north across Plymouth Sound. There is also a ferry service in the summer (from Cawsand Bay to Plymouth Hoe) and a pilot gig club (Rame Gig Club). The Rame Peninsula is considered part of the Forgotten Corner of Cornwall.

Maker-with-Rame (Cornish: Magor a-berth Hordh) is a civil parish in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is situated on the Rame Peninsula, approximately four miles (6.5 km) south of Saltash and two miles (3 km) west of Plymouth.The parish was formed in 1941 from the ecclesiastical parishes of Maker and Rame. It occupies the eastern end of the Rame peninsula and is surrounded on three sides by sea: the Hamoaze to the north, Plymouth Sound to the east, and the English Channel to the south and southwest. To the west, Maker-with-Rame is bounded by Millbrook civil parish. The population of the parish (including Anderton) at the 2011 census was 1,020.Maker-with-Rame takes its name from its principal villages, Maker and Rame. Other settlements in the parish include Cawsand, Cremyll and Kingsand. The population of the parish at the 2011 census was 977.

Cawsand Bay is a bay on the southeast coast of Cornwall, England, United Kingdom.The bay takes its name from the village of Cawsand at grid reference SX 434 503, to the northeast of the Rame Peninsula. Cawsand Bay is oriented north–south, opening eastward into Plymouth Sound about 3 miles (5 km) south-southwest of Plymouth, as the crow flies.Cawsand Bay is about one mile (1.6 km) across and about a mile and a half (2.4 km) wide across its mouth and is bounded by Penlee Point to the south. A once-popular ballad entitled "Harry Grady and Miss Elinor Ford, the Rich Heiress" appeared as early as 1840 in Hamilton Moore's Nautical Sketches (William Edward Painter, 1840). It was included under the title "Cawsand Bay" in Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch's The Oxford Book of Ballads (Clarendon Press, 1910).

Maker Battery is a former 19th-century coastal artillery battery, built to strengthen the defence of the Royal Naval Dockyard at Devonport. The battery was proposed in 1885 on the recommendations of the Stanhope Committee report and completed in 1887. It was built with emplacements for a single 12.5-inch Rifled Muzzle Loading (RML) gun which was mounted. It was then supplemented in 1890 when two further 12.5-inch guns were moved from nearby Grenville Battery.The gun positions were served by underground magazines. The rear of the battery is enclosed by a small ditch and drawbridge. There was no barrack accommodation at the battery, but a small cookhouse was built to cater for the men expected to man the battery. The battery was upgraded with newer armament in 1899 when the battery was re-modelled for two 6-inch breech loading (BL) guns which were installed by 1903. These remained in place until 1911 when they were dismounted. The battery was abandoned by the War Office in 1948. The battery remains complete but derelict today.

Grenville Battery is a former coastal artillery battery, built to defend the Royal Naval Dockyard at Devonport. The battery was originally built between 1760 and 1791 as part of the Maker Redoubt line and then named 'Maker No 4 (North Gloucester) Redoubt', it was intended to form part of a long defensive line of bastions to a larger fort which was never built. The battery had 15 gun embrasures. It was disarmed in 1815. The re-modelling of the battery was proposed in 1885 on the recommendations of the Stanhope Committee report and completed in 1887. It was renamed Grenville Battery in 1899. It was built with emplacements for two 12.5-inch Rifled Muzzle Loading (RML) guns which were both mounted. However, in 1890 they were moved to nearby Maker Battery. The gun positions were served by underground magazines. The rear of the battery is enclosed by a loopholed wall, small ditch and drawbridge. There was no barrack accommodation at the battery, but a small cookhouse was built to cater for the men expected to man the battery and nearby Maker Battery.The battery was upgraded with newer armament in 1899 when the battery was re-modelled for three 4.7-inch Quick Firing (QF) guns which were installed by 1901. These remained in place until 1927 when they were dismounted. The battery was abandoned by the War Office in 1948. The battery remains complete and was Grade II listed in 1972.It was overgrown for many years, but in 2020 the battery was cleared of undergrowth and accumulated rubbish by the Rame Conservation Trust, with financial support from Historic England.

Hawkins Battery is a former coastal artillery battery, built to defend the Royal Naval Dockyard at Devonport. The battery was originally built between 1888 and 1892 to mount four 9-inch Rifled Muzzle Loading (RML) guns on high angle mountings, which were all mounted. These guns could provide high angle, plunging fire onto more lightly armoured decks of enemy warships attempting to enter Plymouth Sound. The battery is enclosed by concrete walls, with three small caponiers, built like pill boxes to provide enfilading fire along the ditches. The gun positions were served by underground magazines. The battery was built with caretaker's accommodation and crew shelters for the gun detachments who would man the battery in time of war.The battery was upgraded with newer armament after 1910 when the battery was re-modelled for two 9.2-inch Breech Loading (BL) high angle fire guns. These remained in place until 1922 when they were dismounted. The battery was used for further military purposes during the Second World War, but was sold by the War Office in 1959.The battery remains complete and is now run as a camping and holiday park.

Rame Church Battery was a gun battery in south east Cornwall. It was built between 1889 and 1893 to defend HMNB Devonport from Rame area and was demolished and infilled in the early 1970s.

Raleigh Battery is a former coastal artillery battery, built to defend the Royal Naval Dockyard at Devonport. The battery was constructed between March 1890 and August 1894 at a cost of £4,963. It was located between Hawkins Battery and due-east of Maker Farm, on sloping land facing the sea. The battery was positioned to prevent ships lying at anchor off Cawsand Bay and to support Picklecombe Fort guarding the approaches to Plymouth Sound. It mounted two 10-inch Breech Loading (BL) guns, one on an Elswick Ordnance Company barbette mounting, the other on a Royal Carriage Department barbette mounting. The gun positions were served by underground magazines which were linked by a tunnel that slopes down underneath a central earth traverse. There was one magazine to the north of the tunnel and two cartridge stores (each with its own serving hatch) to the south. Each gun emplacement had a store, cartridge recess, a shell recess and a shelter for the gun crew, all built into the concrete gun apron. To the right of the right-hand gun emplacement was a water catchment area and tank. The caretaker's office was on the opposite side which consisted of two bedrooms, a living room and a scullery. In between both of these were two Depression range finders enabling the guns to accurately fire at their targets. Behind the left hand emplacement was an oil store. The battery was surrounded by an iron pallisade fence. There was no barrack accommodation at the battery.The battery was one of very few to mount 10-inch guns, as by the 1890s British Coast Artillery armament was standardised on the 9.2-inch Breech Loading (BL) gun. The nearby Penlee Battery could provide the required defence, and as a result the guns were dismounted in 1910. The battery was abandoned by the War Office in 1948.The battery remains complete but overgrown.

Rame (Cornish: Hordh) is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Maker-with-Rame, in the Cornwall district, in the ceremonial county of Cornwall, England. It is situated on the Rame Peninsula, between Rame Head and the village of Cawsand, in South East Cornwall. In 1931 the parish had a population of 501. On 1 April 1950 the parish was abolished and merged with Maker to form "Maker with Rame". Rame means the high protruding cliff, or possibly, the ram's head. Cawsand was previously in the parish of Rame but now has its own church. The parish of 'Maker-with-Rame' is formed of the hamlets Maker, which also has a church and Rame. Rame was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, when it was held by Ermenhald from Tavistock Abbey. There were 27 households, land for 6 ploughs, 10 acres of pasture and 30 acres of underwood. An electoral division bearing the same name also existed, but was succeeded by the Rame Peninsula division. The population as of the 2011 census was 4,763.There is another Rame near Falmouth in west Cornwall. It is believed that the west Cornwall Rame was named after the one on the Rame Peninsula.During his time in command of the Channel Fleet between 1805 and 1807 John Jervis, 1st Earl of St Vincent rented a house in Rame.

Maker (Cornish: Magor) is a village between Cawsand and Rame Head, Rame Peninsula, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The name means a ruin or old wall in Cornish, possibly because the church was built from the ruins of West Stonehouse in Cremyll. This origin of the name is unlikely, as Maker is first referred to in 705AD, which predates the construction of the church. Another supposition, is that the "old walls" are those of a (now lost) Roman-British villa. However, another Celtic name is Egloshayle, (not to be confused with Egloshayle on the River Camel) which means, "the church on the estuary".The village and its neighbour Rame are in the civil parish of Maker with Rame and the parliamentary constituency of South East Cornwall. The parish had a population of 1,020 at the 2011 census.
