Elsthorpe

Edenham railway station was a station in Edenham, Lincolnshire. It was the terminus of a four-mile branch line from the Great Northern Railway at Little Bytham. The line was built and operated by the Edenham & Little Bytham Railway (E&LBR). It was opened on 8 December 1857. The station closed to passengers on 17 October 1871. Freight traffic continued until about 1884, when the line closed.

Pop., 135. Grimsthorpe Park was the seat once of the Duke of Ancaster, afterwards of Lord Gwyder; is now the seat of Lord Willoughby d'Eresby; was built partly in the time of Henry III., but principally by the Duke of Suffolk, to entertain Henry VIII.; is a large, irregular, but magnificent structure; and stands in an ornate park, about 16 miles in circuit. A Cistertian abbey, founded about 1451, by the Earl of Albemarle, and called Vallis Dei, or, vulgarly, Vaudy, formerly stood in the park, about a mile from the castle.Vaudey Abbey was a Cistercian abbey founded in 1147, dissolved in 1536. The Abbey and its commercial quarries became part of Grimsthorpe Park. The park itself is mentioned in the Domesday Book.The majority of employment in the village is in agriculture, at Grimsthorpe Castle, or at the Black Horse public house.

Scottlethorpe is a village in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. It is situated approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) north-west from Bourne, and on the A151 road. The village is within the civil parish of Edenham; the local area is part of the Grimsthorpe Castle estate. The modern settlement is a series of cottages and a small terrace of houses extending along Scottlethorpe Lane between the modern village of Edenham and the site of the medieval chapel. Scottlethorpe is mentioned in the Domesday Book as "Scachertorp" within the Beltisloe wapentake, and consisting of 3 households and 1.3 ploughlands. In 1086 the Lord of the Manor and Tenant-in-chief became Robert of Tosny.There were medieval chapels in the area, one at Scottlethorpe, and others wider afield. The remains of the 12th-century chapel at Scottlethorpe survived as part of a barn at Manor Farm. However, the barn doorway might have come not from the chapel, but from Vaudey Abbey, The doorway was moved into Edenham church in 1967.

Bulby is a hamlet in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England, and in the civil parish of Irnham, Bulby and Hawthorpe. The village is situated west of the A15, east of the A1, and approximately 4 miles (6 km) north-west from the town of Bourne. In 1872 the two hamlets of Bulby and Hawthorpe were grouped as Bulby-cum-Hawthorpe forming the eastern side of Irnham parish, being a joint township with a population of 180 in 1,767 acres (7.2 km2) "of fertile land". About 1,000 acres (4.0 km2) of Bulby-cum-Hawthorpe land was purchased by Rev. William Watson Smith in about 1840, who built on it the Elizabethan-style Bulby House and grounds. By 1872, Bulby House and 1,100 acres (4.5 km2) of township land was owned by Gilbert Heathcote-Drummond-Willoughby, 1st Earl of Ancaster (Lord Aveland), who was lord of the manor. A moated area evident at the time was said to be the site of Bulby Hall which is "supposed to have been burnt down in the Barons' wars".Bulby has close associations with farming, has a number of surrounding farms, and a plant nursery. The River East Glen passes close to the west of the hamlet.There is evidence of a previous Bulby Hall, and two Medieval settlements: Little Bulby and East Bulby.

Grimsthorpe Castle is a country house in Lincolnshire, England 4 miles (6.4 km) north-west of Bourne on the A151. It lies within a 3,000 acre (12 km2) park of rolling pastures, lakes, and woodland landscaped by Capability Brown. While Grimsthorpe is not a castle in the strict sense of the word, its character is massive and martial – the towers and outlying pavilions recalling the bastions of a great fortress in classical dress. Grimsthorpe has been the home of the de Eresby family since 1516. The present owner is Jane Heathcote-Drummond-Willoughby, 28th Baroness Willoughby de Eresby, granddaughter of Nancy Astor, who died at Grimsthorpe in 1964.

South Kesteven was a rural district in Lincolnshire, Parts of Kesteven in England from 1931 to 1974. It was formed under a County Review Order in 1931, by the merger of the Bourne Rural District and the Uffington Rural District. It continued in existence until 1974, when it was abolished by the Local Government Act 1972, going on to form part of a larger South Kesteven non-metropolitan district.

Stainfield is a hamlet in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. It is 3 miles (5 km) north from Bourne and 1 mile (1.6 km) west from the main A15 trunk road. The hamlet is in the civil parish of Haconby. The name Stainfield (previously Stenfield) derives from "a stony clearing", from the Old Scandinavian 'steinn' and 'thveit'.Stainfield is the site of a Roman station, a settlement established on account of local mineral springs, where Roman coins have been found. The King Street (Roman road) passes through the hamlet. The springs were used until the middle of the 18th century. There was once a chapel in the hamlet.Stainfield is listed in the 1086 Domesday account as "Stainfelde" or "Steinfelde", in the manor of Haconby and Stainfield, and in the Aveland Hundred of Kesteven. The village contained 14 households, 13 villagers, 6 smallholders, 3 freemen and one priest. It comprised just over 3 ploughlands, a meadow of 40 acres (0.2 km2), woodland of 80 acres (0.3 km2), and one mill. The Lord in 1066 was Leofric. In 1086 the land was passed to Heppo the bowman, as Lord of the Manor and Tenant-in-chief.In 1933 Stainfield occupations included two farmers, one at the Manor farm, and three smallholders.

Hawthorpe is a hamlet in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England, and the civil parish of Irnham, Bulby and Hawthorpe. It is west from the A15, east from the A1, and 5 miles (8.0 km) north-west from the town of Bourne. Hawthorpe is mentioned in the Domesday Book as "Awartorp", in the Beltisloe Hundred of Kesteven. It comprised 2 households, 2 villagers and 4 freemen, with 2.9 ploughlands, a meadow of 8 acres (0.032 km2) and woodland of 320 acres (1.3 km2). In 1066 the Lord was Healfdene; after 1086 Lordship was given to Alfred of Lincoln.In the 1872 White's Directory the two hamlets of Bulby and Hawthorpe were grouped as Bulby-cum-Hawthorpe forming the eastern side of Irnham parish, being a joint township with a population of 180 in 1,767 acres (7.2 km2) "of fertile land". Kirkby Underwood is a village and civil parish in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. The population of the civil parish was 200 at the 2001 census, increasing to 220 at the 2011 census. It is situated 4 miles (6 km) north from Bourne and 1 mile (1.6 km) west from the main A15 trunk road. To the east is Rippingale and the Fens. Directly to the south is the hamlet of Stainfield, and to the west, Hawthorpe. Kirkby Underwood Grade I listed Anglican church is dedicated to St. Mary and All Saints. In 1885 Kelly's Directory described the church as in Perpendicular style, with chancel, nave and south aisle, and a tower containing three bells. It was in a "very ruinous state". The parish register dated from 1569.The ecclesiastical parish is part of The Ringstone in Aveland Group of the Deanery of Beltisloe, Diosece of Lincoln. The vicar was the Revd Dr Lynda Pugh between 2012 and 2018. The incumbent is the Revd Neil Bullen. Between the village and Hawthorpe is Callan's Lane Wood, run by the Forestry Commission. Near the wood are two radio masts and a BT microwave transmitter.

Vaudey Abbey , also known as Vandy Abbey or Vandey Abbey, was an English Cistercian abbey. It was founded in 1147 by William, Count of Aumale, Earl of York. Its site is within the Grimsthorpe Castle park, in Lincolnshire, 3.7 miles (6 km) northwest of Bourne on the A151, but there are no remains of the Abbey aside from earthworks.The Victoria County History contains a substantial report and a list of abbots.
