Fayetteville () is the 2nd most populous city in Arkansas, the county seat of Washington County, and the most populous city in Northwest Arkansas. The city is on the outskirts of the Boston Mountains, deep within the Ozarks. Known as Washington until 1829, the city was named after Fayetteville, Tennessee, from which many of the settlers had come. It was incorporated on November 3, 1836, and was rechartered in 1867. Fayetteville is included in the three-county Northwest Arkansas Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is ranked 100th in terms of population in the United States with 576,403 in 2022 according to the United States Census Bureau. The city had a population of 99,285 in 2022.Fayetteville is home to the University of Arkansas, the state's flagship university. When classes are in session, thousands of students on campus change up the pace of the city. Thousands of Arkansas Razorbacks alumni and fans travel to Fayetteville to attend football, basketball, and baseball games. The city of Fayetteville is colloquially known as the "Track Capital of the World" due to the success and prestige of the University of Arkansas cross country and track & field programs. The University's men's cross country and track and field programs have won a combined 41 national championships to date with the women's teams adding 5 national championships since 2015.The city is the first in America to be awarded the designation of "Bike City" by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the world governing body of cycling. It was given the title in 2021 due to it not only hosting major UCI cycling events, but also its work in developing cycling through programs and infrastructure. The city hosts the Walmart Shareholders Meetings each year at the Bud Walton Arena.

The Lynn Shelton American Legion Post No. 27 is a historic clubhouse at 28 South College Avenue in Fayetteville, Arkansas. It is a two-story stone building, designed by local architect T. Ewing Shelton and built in 1939–40. The first floor consists of courses of quarry-faced ashlar stone, while the second consists of rough-cut rubblestone laid in irregular courses. It was built for the local chapter of the American Legion, and sold into private hands in 1994. It now houses office space.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

The Washington County Jail is a historic former civic building at 90 South College Avenue in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Built in 1896, this building was the fourth to serve as county jail, and was in use until 1973, making it the longest tenured in county history. The Romanesque Revival building was designed by W. B. Reese, and is locally unusual and distinctive for its medieval appearance. It is built out of load-bearing stone, square cut and laid in irregular courses, with a rough quarry-cut finish. Most of the building is of darker shades with trim in lighter shades. Nominally two stories in height, the rightmost bay has a square tower with crenellated parapet.The building, which is now in private hands, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

The Ridge House is a historic house at 230 West Center street in Fayetteville, Arkansas. It is owned by the Washington County Historical Society, and is open for tours by appointment. At the core of this two-story clapboarded house is a log dog trot structure, built c. 1835 and occupied by one of Fayetteville's first doctors. That original structure, still visible in parts of the interior, was repeatedly extended and enlarged to achieve its present appearance as a five-bay house with a projecting central front porch. A 19th-century leanto extends the building to the rear, giving it the profile of a classic New England saltbox, a house type rarely seen in Arkansas. The house was purchased in 1840 by the widow of John Ridge, the Cherokee leader who was assassinated after signing a treaty leading to the Cherokee removal.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

The John Paul Hammerschmidt Federal Building, located 1/2 block off the Fayetteville Historic Square in downtown Fayetteville, Arkansas is home to the Fayetteville division of the United States District Court for the Western District of Arkansas.

The Fayetteville Historic Square (usually shortened to Fayetteville Square or just The Square), in Fayetteville, Arkansas, includes the original Fayetteville post office, the Old Bank of Fayetteville Building, the Lewis Brothers Building, the Mrs. Young Building, and the Guisinger Building. These buildings are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. There are several more recent buildings located on the Square. The historic district is defined by Center Street on the north, Mountain Street to the south, Block Avenue to the west and East Avenue to the east. The block within these one-way streets contains the Old Post Office, and formerly, the County Courthouse.

Arkansas College was founded in Fayetteville, Arkansas in 1850 by pastor Robert Graham (1822-1901). In 1852, it was the first school to receive a school charter from the state of Arkansas. In 1859, William Baxter became the second president of the college. In 1862, the college was destroyed by Confederate forces during the American Civil War.

The Ellis Building is a historic commercial building at 208 North Block Avenue in Fayetteville, Arkansas. It is a single-story brick building, with a hip roof that has a rounded top section. The roof's shape is obscured from the front by a low stepped parapet. The front facade has a former garage bay opening to the left, and a pair of plate glass display windows flanking a pedestrian entrance to the right. The building was under construction about 1923, and is one of the oldest surviving automotive service buildings in northwestern Arkansas. It has housed a variety of commercial businesses since ending automotive use about 1955.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2019.

The Battle of Fayetteville, also known as the Action at Fayetteville, was a battle of the American Civil War fought on April 18, 1863, in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Fayetteville Confederate Cemetery is a cemetery for soldiers of the Confederate States located on the eastern side of Fayetteville in Washington County, Arkansas. Added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1993, the cemetery encompasses 3.5 acres (1.4 ha).

The Frisco Depot (Frisco being a common shortening of the St. Louis – San Francisco Railway) in Fayetteville, Arkansas, is a railroad depot built in 1925. The last passenger trains left Frisco Depot in 1965, and starting in 2011, the depot's interior houses a Chipotle Mexican Grill. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 8, 1988.
