East Arm Little Calumet River

Portage ( POR-tij) is a city in Portage Township, Porter County, in the U.S. state of Indiana, on the border with Lake County. The population was 37,926 as of the 2020 census. It is the largest city in Porter County, and third largest in Northwest Indiana.

Portage/Ogden Dunes is a station in Porter County, Indiana serving the municipalities of Portage, Indiana and Ogden Dunes, Indiana. It is used by South Shore Line trains. Ogden Dunes is a semi-gated community with one major access road off of U.S. Highway 12, and the station is located adjacent to where this road accesses the community. Portage/Ogden Dunes is a comparatively new station, built in 1998–1999 to replace the Ogden Dunes flag stop located about a hundred feet west. The new station also serves new residential subdivisions in and around Portage, Indiana. The Portage/Ogden Dunes station is close to the Inland Marsh and West Beach units of the Indiana Dunes National Park. The station has a single ground-level platform north of the tracks. Three small passenger shelters are positioned at the beginning, middle and end of the platform. South Bend bound riders are discharged in the space between inbound and outbound tracks, right over the wooden walkways that connect them to the platform. The station is accessible thanks to recently built ramp structures located on both sides of the track. They are designed to sync up to the first car of the train.

Ogden Dunes is a town in Portage Township, Porter County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. It is located on the shore of Lake Michigan, within Indiana Dunes National Park and nearly surrounded by the city of Portage. The population was 1,110 at the 2010 census. It is named for multi-millionaire Francis A. Ogden, who owned the land there before his death in 1914. His main interest in the land where the dunes are was the sand which could be scooped up and sold, with more sand being replenished naturally over time.Many residents of Ogden Dunes helped preserve parts of the Indiana Dunes.The town is the site of the Portage / Ogden Dunes station, which is served by South Shore Line passenger trains to and from Chicago. The principal thoroughfare serving the town is U.S. Route 12, which passes along the town's southern edge and connects it to nearby communities such as Gary to the west and Burns Harbor to the east. Ogden Dunes has been reported as having the highest rate of Lyme disease in Indiana.

Salt Creek is a 24.0-mile-long (38.6 km) tributary of the East Arm Little Calumet River that begins south of Valparaiso in Porter County, Indiana and flows north until it joins the East Arm Little Calumet River just before it exits to Lake Michigan via the Port of Indiana-Burns Waterway.

Willow Creek is a neighborhood in the city of Portage, Indiana in Porter County. It is the location of the junction of the Garrett Subdivision, Porter Subdivision, and Barr Subdivision, all sections of the CSX Railroad.

The Lindstrom/Wahl farm is an historic farmstead located to the south of the former community of Baillytown in Porter County, Indiana. It was started by Swedish immigrant Gustaf Lindstrom in 1870. Before 1900, Arthur Wahl obtained the property and developed most of the existing structures. The farm illustrates the prosperity of some of the early Swedish-American settlers. The residence was originally a two-room log cabin. As the families wealth increased, a larger residence was constructed around the log cabin and a barn added. This was after 1900. Like other Swedish farmers, the Wahls relied on an outside occupations for economic security. They continued to farm and began a nursery in the 1930s. Farmhouse - The house has two floor, each rectangular in shape. Later additions include; two porches and the summer kitchen on the back. The earlier log cabin is still within the current structure. The cabin had two rooms and is thought to be a hall & parlor design. The current residence built in the 1900s (decade). The molded concrete block foundation supports a frame structure with lap siding and corner boards. The windows are double hung. The roof is a gable design. A family tradition indicates that members of the Wahl family built the house Barn - The barn, built around 1910, is two stories. It is a vertical board structure with a gambrel roof covered in roll roofing. The building has a concrete foundation. The windows are fixed pane 4 lite. On the east is a double door. The hay track and door are still evident on the south side. Two garage doors were added on the south.

Portage Township is one of twelve townships in Porter County, Indiana. As of the 2010 census, its population was 47,085. Portage Township was established in 1835. The residents of Portage Township played pivotal roles in the conservation of the Indiana Dunes.

Long Lake is a large interdunal wetland in the Indiana Dunes region of Northwest Indiana. It was originally approximately 8 miles in length, but has been shortened due to development and drainage. It has a surface area of 34 hectares, and a maximum depth of 1.8 meters. There are three small islands, and the total shoreline length is 4.6 kilometers.Long Lake is bisected by a major local arterial road, County Line Road. The eastern portion of the lake lies in Porter County in the town of Ogden Dunes, and the western portion is in Lake County in the Miller Beach community. The vast majority of Long Lake is within the boundaries of the Indiana Dunes National Park, although a small area at the eastern end in Ogden Dunes is used by the American Water company for a water purification plant Along the southern edge of the lake the Norfolk Southern railway, South Shore Line railway, and U.S. Route 12 highway run in parallel. The north side of Long Lake was formerly traversed by the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad. That railway has now been replaced by the Marquette Trail and Long Lake Trail, multi-use trails used by cyclists, hikers and birdwatchers.

The Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor is an industrial area, founded in 1965 and located on the Lake Michigan shore of Indiana at the intersection of U.S. Route 12 and Indiana State Road 249. The primary work done in the area is the manufacturing of steel, and the port area is dominated by steel mills. The port is divided between the municipalities of Burns Harbor and Portage. Construction of the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor was extremely controversial, with conservationists fighting to preserve a segment of the Indiana Dunes that occupied the site of the future port. The port and its steel mills were constructed on top of what was once the Central Dunes region of the Indiana Dunes and site of some of the hanggliding experiments carried out by a crew led by pioneer aviator Octave Chanute. Authorization of the Indiana Dunes National Park, which borders the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor on three sides, was part of a political compromise that also involved the construction of the port.

Burns Harbor is a town in Westchester Township, Porter County, Indiana, United States on the shores of Lake Michigan in Northwest Indiana. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The population was 1,156 at the 2010 census. Burns Harbor is located adjacent to the Indiana Dunes, an area that conservationists have fought hard to preserve.

Crocker is an unincorporated community in Liberty Township, Porter County, in the U.S. state of Indiana.

The Bailly Generating Station was a 604 megawatt (MW) coal power plant located in Burns Harbor, Indiana, on the shore of Lake Michigan adjacent to the Port of Indiana. The plant, which began operation in 1962 and tripled its capacity in 1968, is owned and operated by the Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO), an electric-utility operating division of the energy holding company NiSource. The plant ceased coal-fired electrical generation on May 31, 2018.
