Four Mile Tree is the name of a plantation near Jamestown, Virginia that once encompassed two thousand acres (8 km2), it was situated on the south bank of the James River opposite Jamestown, four miles (6 km) further north. On a hill near the water's edge a handsome old house overlooks the river. This plantation, was the seat of the Browne family for two hundred years. The first owner, Colonel Henry Browne, was a member of Sir William Berkeley's Council in 1643. The plantation house constructed circa 1745 remains well-preserved in its original historical state.

The Chickahominy is an 87-mile-long (140 km) river in eastern Virginia. The river, which serves as the eastern border of Charles City County, rises about 15 miles (24 km) northwest of Richmond and flows southeast and south to the James River. The river was named after the Chickahominy Indian tribe who lived near the river when the English colonists arrived in 1607. Chickahominy descendants live in Charles City County today. During the American Civil War (1861–65), the upper reaches of the river became a major obstacle to Union General George B. McClellan's Peninsula Campaign, a failed attempt in 1862 to capture the Confederate capital of Richmond. Docile, narrow, and relatively easily crossed during dry weather, after periods of rain, the river expands across a flood plain with swamps as much as a mile across. The Chickahominy was in flood stage and divided the Union Army during crucial periods, despite continuous efforts by the United States Army Corps of Engineers to build and maintain bridges. Other battles were fought nearby in 1864. Part of a popular recreational area for boating, waterskiing, and sport fishing, featuring Walkers Dam and Chickahominy Lake, the lower Chickahominy River has become a major source of drinking water for the lower portion of the Virginia Peninsula in modern times. It also serves as a border for the Chickahominy Wildlife Management Area.

Smith's Fort Plantation is a house and parcel of land located in Surry County, Virginia, United States. The current main house on the property, also known as the Faulcon House, dates from 1751. The house has been an example for numerous twentieth century reproductions. It is also known as Warren House and Rolfe-Warren House.

Surry County Courthouse Complex is a historic courthouse complex located at Surry, Surry County, Virginia. The complex consists of the county courthouse, old clerk's office (1825–1826), VPI Extension office (c. 1907), the Commonwealth Attorney's office, the Commissioner of Revenue's office, a storage building, a Confederate memorial, and general district court building (c. 1840). The county courthouse building was built in 1923, and is a two-story, seven-bay, Classical Revival style brick building. It features a hexastyle Ionic order portico that dominates its front facade.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

Surry (formerly Cross Roads, McIntosh's Cross Roads, McIntoshs Cross Roads, Scuffletown, Smithville, Surry Court House, and The Crossroads) is an incorporated town in Surry County, Virginia, United States. The population was 244 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Surry County. Its name is derived from the historic county of Surrey in England.

Enos House, also known as Warren House, is a historic home located on Enos Farm Drive near Surry, Surry County, Virginia. It was built c. 1810, and is a 1+1⁄2-story, double-pile hall-parlor plan frame dwelling. It has a gable roof and features a low full-length shed porch on the front facade. It has a 20th-century rear ell.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. The farm is now owned by Surry County, which has developed it for recreational purposes. The property, but not the house, is open to the public.

Dancing Point is a historic property on the north bank of the James River in rural Charles City County, Virginia. Located off Sandy Point Road and projecting into the river, the property has archaeological sites dating to the early colonial period of Virginia's history that may shed light on the interaction between the early settlers of nearby Jamestown and the surrounding Native American communities; it is known to the be site of the 1619 Smith's Hundred settlement. The property is more recently notable for a Post-Modern landscape design by Thomas Church, executed in the 1970s, that is believed to be his only surviving commission in the state. A house from the same period was designed by Robert W. Stewart.The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.

Grays Creek is an 6.02-mile-long (9.69 km) stream in the U.S. state of Virginia. It is a tributary of the James River, rising south of State Route 626 and flowing east to reach the James River southwest of Historic Jamestowne, across the river.

Virginia's third congressional district is a United States congressional district in the Commonwealth of Virginia, serving the independent cities of Norfolk, Newport News, Hampton, Portsmouth, and part of the independent city of Chesapeake. The district is represented by Democrat Bobby Scott. VA-03 is majority-minority and has a plurality Black electorate, and is heavily Democratic. In 1788 Virginia's 3rd congressional district consisted of all of modern Virginia including and west of the counties of Carroll, Floyd, Roanoke, Botetourt, Augusta and Rockingham. It also included what is today Pendleton County, West Virginia and also about the southern third of West Virginia which in 1788 was all Greenbrier County. This area that is today about 48 counties and 13 independent cities was in 1788 only nine counties.In the 1790 census, this area had a population of 66,045. For the 1792 congressional elections the number of congressional districts in Virginia rose from 10 to 19. The only county that remained in the third district was Pendleton County. Harrison, Randolph, Hardy, Hampshire, Monongalia and Ohio Counties, all now in West Virginia were also in the district. This was all of northern West Virginia except the far eastern panhandle area. The new district's 1790 population was 30,145.The 1800 census lead to another increase in Virginia's congressional districts in 1802. The third district was again moved, this time to what was then Frederick and Shenandoah Counties in Virginia, which besides those counties also included the modern counties of Clarke, Warren and part of Page. The new 3rd district had a population of 38,767 in 1800.For most of the time from the end of the Civil War to 1993, the 3rd district was a relatively compact district centered on Richmond. The district's current configuration dates to 1993, when the Justice Department ordered Virginia to create a majority-minority district. At that time, portions of the old 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th districts were combined to create a new 3rd district. The Virginia Legislature's 2012 redistricting was found unconstitutional, in part because of racial gerrymandering, and replaced was with a court-ordered map on January 16, 2016 for the 2016 elections. From 1993 to 2016, the 3rd had covered most of the majority-black precincts in and around Hampton Roads and Richmond. The court-drawn map shifted the area near Richmond to the 4th district.

The Barrett's Ferry Bridge, officially known as the Judith Stewart Dresser Bridge, is a fixed-span bridge which carries State Route 5 across the Chickahominy River between Charles City County and James City County in eastern Virginia. It connects popular tourism destinations of the James River Plantations with Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown. The current bridge, which opened on January 24, 2009, replaced the deteriorating 70-year-old bridge.

Tettington is an unincorporated community in Charles City County, Virginia, United States.

The Jamestown Ferry (also known as the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry) is a free automobile and bus ferry service across a navigable portion of the James River in Virginia. It carries State Route 31, connecting Jamestown in James City County with Scotland Wharf in Surry County. The service provides the only vehicle crossing of the river between the James River Bridge downstream at Newport News and the Benjamin Harrison Memorial Bridge upriver near Hopewell. It is toll-free and operated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The vessels carry over 900,000 passengers annually. Operations are based at the Scotland Wharf in Surry County.
