The Chickahominy is an 87-mile-long (140 km) river in eastern Virginia. The river, which serves as the eastern border of Charles City County, rises about 15 miles (24 km) northwest of Richmond and flows southeast and south to the James River. The river was named after the Chickahominy Indian tribe who lived near the river when the English colonists arrived in 1607. Chickahominy descendants live in Charles City County today. During the American Civil War (1861–65), the upper reaches of the river became a major obstacle to Union General George B. McClellan's Peninsula Campaign, a failed attempt in 1862 to capture the Confederate capital of Richmond. Docile, narrow, and relatively easily crossed during dry weather, after periods of rain, the river expands across a flood plain with swamps as much as a mile across. The Chickahominy was in flood stage and divided the Union Army during crucial periods, despite continuous efforts by the United States Army Corps of Engineers to build and maintain bridges. Other battles were fought nearby in 1864. Part of a popular recreational area for boating, waterskiing, and sport fishing, featuring Walkers Dam and Chickahominy Lake, the lower Chickahominy River has become a major source of drinking water for the lower portion of the Virginia Peninsula in modern times. It also serves as a border for the Chickahominy Wildlife Management Area.

Margots, also known as Eagle's Nest, Eagles Lodge, and Claybancke, is a historic home located near Tettington, Charles City County, Virginia. It was originally built about 1700, as a 1+1⁄2-story, three-bay brick structure above a basement, until raised by addition of a frame second story in the 19th century. The house measures 44 feet, 4 inches, by 20 feet, 8 inches. It is one of a few surviving circa 1700 medium-sized houses of Tidewater Virginia. In 1973, the property was sold to the Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries by the Beale Estate.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Pinewoods, also known as Warburton House, is a historic home located near Lightfoot, James City County, Virginia. The house dates to the late-17th century, and is a 1+1⁄2-story, early Colonial brick dwelling. It has a gable roof with dormers and features two very fine T-shaped chimney stacks.Edmund Ware Warburton (1861–1919) was for a long time a member of the James City school board; from 1899 to 1904 he was a member of the Williamsburg city council and twice mayor of the city. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

Dancing Point is a historic property on the north bank of the James River in rural Charles City County, Virginia. Located off Sandy Point Road and projecting into the river, the property has archaeological sites dating to the early colonial period of Virginia's history that may shed light on the interaction between the early settlers of nearby Jamestown and the surrounding Native American communities; it is known to the be site of the 1619 Smith's Hundred settlement. The property is more recently notable for a Post-Modern landscape design by Thomas Church, executed in the 1970s, that is believed to be his only surviving commission in the state. A house from the same period was designed by Robert W. Stewart.The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.

Rustic is an unincorporated community in Charles City County, Virginia, United States.

Four Mile Tree is the name of a plantation near Jamestown, Virginia that once encompassed two thousand acres (8 km2), it was situated on the south bank of the James River opposite Jamestown, four miles (6 km) further north. On a hill near the water's edge a handsome old house overlooks the river. This plantation, was the seat of the Browne family for two hundred years. The first owner, Colonel Henry Browne, was a member of Sir William Berkeley's Council in 1643. The plantation house constructed circa 1745 remains well-preserved in its original historical state.

Chickahominy Wildlife Management Area is a 5,217-acre (21.11 km2) Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Charles City County, Virginia. It is the only WMA located in the coastal plain of tidewater Virginia consisting primarily of forested uplands with a lesser amount of wetland habitat. The area's namesake is the Chickahominy River, a tidal river which forms its eastern boundary. Morris Creek flows through the property, forming its southern boundary; other smaller creeks and marshes are also present. The forests mainly consist of mixed hardwoods and pines. The preserve is nearly level, with elevations ranging from 25 to 50 feet (7.6 to 15.2 m) above sea level.Chickahominy WMA is owned and maintained by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources. The area is open to the public for hunting, trapping, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, boating, and primitive camping. A shooting range for sighting-in firearms is available, in addition to a boat launch on Morris Creek which provides access to both the Chickahominy and James rivers. Access for persons 17 years of age or older requires a valid hunting or fishing permit, a current Virginia boat registration, or a WMA access permit.

Tettington is an unincorporated community in Charles City County, Virginia, United States.

Green Spring Plantation in James City County about five miles (8.0 km) west of Williamsburg, was the 17th century plantation of one of the most unpopular governors of Colonial Virginia in North America, Sir William Berkeley, and his wife, Frances Culpeper Berkeley. Sir William Berkeley, who served several terms, is perhaps the best-known of Virginia's colonial governors. Contrary to popular belief the well-known Berkeley Plantation in nearby Charles City County was not named in his honor. Today, a section of the land that formed the core of Green Spring Plantation is part of the Colonial National Historical Park. It also lends its name to the section of the multi-use Virginia Capital Trail that extends from Governor Berkeley's capital at Jamestown, past many former great plantations (including Berkeley plantation) to the current state capital at Richmond, Virginia.

Blanks Store is an unincorporated community in Charles City County, Virginia, United States.

Scotland also known as Scotland Wharf is a census-designated place (CDP) in Surry County, Virginia, United States. The population as of the 2010 Census was 203. Located on State Route 31 (the John Rolfe Highway), Scotland is the southern terminus and headquarters of the Jamestown Scotland Ferry, a crossing service of the James River operated by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). Visitors approaching from the south to Virginia's Historic Triangle may use the ferry service via Scotland. Replicas of the Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery are docked near the northern ferry terminus at Glasshouse Point in James City County and can be seen from the ferry. Scotland was at one time the terminal of a narrow-gauge railroad from Dendron. Pleasant Point and Swann's Point Plantation Site are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Jamestown High School is a public secondary school at 3751 John Tyler Highway in James City County, Virginia, just outside Williamsburg, Virginia. The school opened in 1997, becoming the second of three high schools in the county. It is part of Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools. As of 2013 it had 1,211 students.
