The 1958 Rio de Janeiro train crash, occurred on May 8, 1958, in Mangueira, a suburb two miles west of Rio de Janeiro city centre in Brazil when two electric trains collided head on, killing 128 people and injuring more than 300. It is the most serious rail accident in the history of the city.A signalling error had routed an outgoing commuter train onto the same track as an incoming local. The collision resulted in a 'horrible mass of twisted steel and mangled bodies' as the two trains telescoped together. The wreckage of the carriages was left piled along embankments under a highway overpass. The following day angry residents and relatives of the dead invaded and wrecked both Mangueira station and the busy Engenho de Dentro station. Crowds also stormed three other nearby stations but were repelled by police. The president of Brazil, Dr. Juscelino Kubitschek, angered by reports that the disaster was caused by 'negligence', dismissed three officials of the Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil (Central Railway of Brazil).

Mangueira (Mango Tree) is a shantytown neighborhood (favela) in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, centered on the Mangueira hill or morro. It is most famous for its samba school, the Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Estação Primeira de Mangueira, called for short Estação Primeira de Mangueira (First Mangueira [train] Station) or simply Mangueira, which is one of strongest competitors in the annual Rio Carnival samba competition.

Thus, from the point of view of Brazil, the elevation to the rank of a kingdom and the creation of the United Kingdom represented a change in status, from that of a colony to that of an equal member of a political union. In the wake of the Liberal Revolution of 1820 in Portugal, attempts to compromise the autonomy and even the unity of Brazil, led to the breakdown of the union.

Benfica is a neighborhood in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is located near São Cristóvão and Engenho de Dentro, within the Centro (Downtown) Administrative Region. Benfica was first populated in the 16th century, as an area of sugarcane plantation developed by Jesuit missionaries, who received an extensive donation of land, which also included present-day Engenho da Rainha and Engenho Novo, from Estácio de Sá. After the jesuits were expelled from the Portuguese Empire by the marquis of Pombal, in 1759, possessions in Benfica were granted to various private owners, and the region became further populated. The neighbourhood has historically played a role as a resting place and point of passage to places of interest in the outskirts of Rio, most notably on the Estrada Real (Royal Road). Today, Benfica is served by the Avenida Brasil and Avenida Dom Hélder Câmara, two avenues which link downtown Rio to suburbs in the North and West Zones.

Vila Isabel is a middle-class neighborhood in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, known for its music-themed Boulevard 28 de Setembro, which celebrates the neighborhood's long musical heritage. Many musicians like Almirante, Braguinha, Henrique Brito and Noel Rosa (who has a statue of him seated at a cafe table on the aforementioned boulevard) used to play in Vila Isabel. It is home to Unidos de Vila Isabel, one of the most traditional samba schools in Rio de Janeiro. The neighborhood was named in honor of Brazilian Princess Isabel, renowned for abolishing Brazil slavery.

The Rio de Janeiro Zoological Garden (Portuguese: Jardim Zoológico do Rio de Janeiro) is a zoo located in the district of São Cristóvão, in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The institution has among its main objectives the development of environmental and educational activities, based on the animals of its collection—which consists mainly of fish, reptiles, birds, and mammals. The zoo is housed in a 55,000-square-meter park at the back of Quinta da Boa Vista. Its collection currently has over 1,300 animals. There are 350 species, many of them rare and endangered, such as the Lear's macaw, harpy eagle, broad-snouted caiman, maned wolf, golden-headed lion tamarin, anteater and the king vulture. In addition to native species of the Amazon Region, the Pantanal and the Brazilian Cerrado, there are also other animals from other countries, such as the rhinoceros and the American brown bear.

CETIQT (Centro de Tecnologia da Indústria Química e Têxtil; English: Technology Center of Chemical and Textile Industry) is a professional school and a center for professional development to the textile industry in Brazil. It has two campuses located in Rio de Janeiro, the Riachuelo Campus (22.898366°S 43.256857°W / -22.898366; -43.256857) in Ilha do Fundão neighborhood, and the Barra Campus or Centro Empresarial Mario Henrique Simonsen (22.999727°S 43.345425°W / -22.999727; -43.345425) in Barra da Tijuca borough. CETIQT is one of the school units of SENAI (Serviço Nacional de Aprendizagem Industrial; English: National Service for Industrial Training), a network of not-for-profit secondary level professional schools established and maintained by the Brazilian Confederation of Industry. This university has two bachelor degrees: chemical engineering and fashion design.

The opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics took place on the evening of Friday 5 August 2016 in the Maracanã Stadium, Rio de Janeiro, starting at 20:00 BRT (23:00 UTC). As mandated by the Olympic Charter, the proceedings combined the formal ceremonial opening of this international sporting event (including welcoming speeches, hoisting of the flags and the parade of athletes, as well as a new feature—the presentation of the International Olympic Committee's Olympic Laurel distinction) with an artistic spectacle to showcase the host nation's culture and history. The Games were officially opened by Acting President of Brazil Michel Temer.Directed by Fernando Meirelles, Daniela Thomas and Andrucha Waddington, the ceremony featured presentations of the history and culture of Brazil, including its landscape and forests, the history of the Brazilian people dating back to the arrival of the Portuguese, music and samba, and the favelas among other aspects. Portions of the ceremony were also dedicated to the topics of environmental conservation and climate change. The ceremony was intended to have a significantly lower cost than those of other recent Olympics, with a reported budget under R$20,433,298 (US$6.5265 million). The ceremony was praised by the international media for its vivid, diverse performances, emphasis on multiculturalism, and its appeal to the issue of climate change.
