All Saints Church, Waldershare

Ashley (also known, signposted and marked on some maps as Sutton) is a hamlet located in the parish of Sutton, some five miles (8 km) north of Dover on the summit of Gaggs Hill in Kent, England. Ashley runs almost seamlessly into the neighbouring village of Studdal. The A256 road passes to the west of Ashley. The population of the hamlet is included in the civil parish of Tilmanstone. The main road running through Ashley is Chapel Lane. This is because of the small (Baptist) chapel that still stands on it. It was one of several village chapels in the area which belonged to the Eythorne Baptist Church "group". The chapel has now been converted into a dwelling / house. The public house in the photograph ceased trading in 2005 and was converted into a private dwelling in 2009. Ashley is in a predominantly rural area and the starting place of many hiking routes.

Eythorne is a civil parish and small village located 7.3 miles north-northwest of Dover in Kent, with a combined population of approximately 2,500 residents including nearby villages Barfrestone and Elvington. Although not classed as one of the former pit villages of Kent, it was only about a mile from Tilmanstone – which closed in 1986. Today many of its residents commute to work in Dover, Deal and Canterbury. Eythorne Baptist Church is more than 450 years old and one of the first Baptist churches in the United Kingdom. Esther Copley, wife of William Copley, who was a minister in Eythorne from about 1839 to 1843, was a prolific and successful writer of children's books and books on the domestic economy. She died in the village in 1851. Eythorne once had three pubs; The Crown is still trading, but the White Horse and the Palm Tree are long closed, both now being residential properties. Eythorne is historically divided into two halves: Lower Eythorne, where the Church of England and Roman Catholic churches are situated, and Upper Eythorne, where the village shop and the Crown public house are located, and where most of today's villagers live. Many reside in the small housing developments that sprang up in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Eythorne Baptist Church originated in the meetings of early 16th century Baptists who had crossed the English Channel from the low countries to Kent to escape persecution. Nineteenth-century Baptist writer J. J. Goadby named Eythorne as one of the three "most ancient Baptist churches in England".For many years the Church had associated village chapels in east Kent. Two of these remain—at Adisham and Nonington. Others were at Eastry, Ashley, Woolage Green, Wootton and Barnsole.

Eythorne railway station is a station on the East Kent Railway. Originally a station on the East Kent Light Railway, It opened on 16 October 1916 but closed to passenger traffic after the last train on 30 October 1948. It served as the junction for the branch to Guilford Colliery, which was abandoned in 1921. The track on this branch was lifted in 1931 but relaid during World War II to accommodate a 9.2 inches (230 mm) rail mounted gun. The station served the village of Eythorne, it reopened as part of the East Kent Railway in 1993.

Dover and Deal is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2024 by Mike Tapp representing the Labour Party. It was known as Dover until 1974 and from 1983 until 2024. Further to the completion of the 2023 Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies, the seat reverted to its current name, to be first contested at the 2024 general election. Dover was considered a Cinque Ports constituency from 1386 to 1832.

Waldershare is a village near Dover in Kent, England. In 1086, the village was in the hundred of Eastry in the ancient Lathe of Eastry. By 1295 the ancient lathe had been merged into the Lathe of St. Augustine. In the 18th century, the noble family of Waldershare were lords of a manor in the parish of Shebbertswell. The population of the village is included in the civil parish of Shepherdswell with Coldred.

West Studdal is a village near Dover in Kent, England. The population of the village is included in the civil parish of Sutton.

Tilmanstone Colliery Halt was a station on the East Kent Light Railway. It opened on 16 October 1916 and was renamed Elvington in 1925. It closed to passenger traffic after the last train on 30 October 1948. The station served the pit village of Elvington. Part of the platform is still in situ hidden in undergrowth.

Church Whitfield is a village in the civil parish of Whitfield, and just north of Dover, in Kent, England. Village population is included in Whitfield civil parish. Part of the village is called Pineham. St Peter's Church is a 10th-century Saxon Church largely rebuilt in Norman times, although the church is first mentioned in 762 AD. It was restored and enlarged in 1894 by Ewan Christian.

Tilmanstone is a small village and civil parish in Kent, in the South East of England, near Eastry, a much bigger and more developed area. Tilmanstone no longer has a village school; however, the independent Northbourne Park School is close to the parish boundary. The name of Tilmanstone has historically been famous for its colliery, although it is located in the village of Eythorne, operated from 1906 to 1986 as one of the four main pits of the Kent coalfield. The population taken at the 2011 Census also included that of the nearby hamlet of Ashley.

Temple Ewell Preceptory was a preceptory of the Knights Templar at Temple Ewell on the northern outskirts of Dover in Kent, England.

The Kent Coalfield is a coalfield in the eastern part of the English county of Kent. The Coalfields Trust defines the Kent Coalfield as the wards of Barham Downs and Marshside in the Canterbury district, and the wards of Aylesham, Eastry, Eythorne & Shepherdswell, Middle Deal & Sholden, Mill Hill and North Deal in the Dover district.Coal was discovered in the area in 1890 while borings for an early Channel Tunnel project were taking place; the resultant Shakespeare colliery lasted until 1915. In 1911, investigation into whether there was other workable coal was planned. Six 'bore holes' were put down in search of coal (at Rushbourne, Hoads Wood in Sturry, Herne Bay, Reculver, Chitty (which is near Chislet) and Chislet Park near the future site of Hersden). In the early years many collieries were sunk but were short-lived and the East Kent Light Railway was built to exploit the anticipated business. Extensive plans had been drawn up by 1914 for major coal exploitation in east Kent, and the coalfield expanded rapidly in the late 1920s and early 1930s, with its maximum output reached in 1936. The outbreak of war and disappointing test results resulted in four collieries surviving: Betteshanger, Chislet, Snowdown and Tilmanstone. Had coal been more easily accessible, the open, rural landscape of east Kent could have changed beyond recognition.
