The Flixborough disaster was an explosion at a chemical plant close to the village of Flixborough, North Lincolnshire, England, on 1 June 1974. It killed 28 and seriously injured 36 of the 72 people on site at the time. The casualty figures could have been much higher if the explosion had occurred on a weekday, when the main office area would have been occupied. A contemporary campaigner on process safety wrote "the shock waves rattled the confidence of every chemical engineer in the country".The disaster involved (and may well have been caused by) a hasty equipment modification. Although virtually all of the plant management personnel had chemical engineering qualifications, there was no on-site senior manager with mechanical engineering expertise. Mechanical engineering issues with the modification were overlooked by the managers who approved it, and the severity of potential consequences due to its failure were not taken into account. Flixborough led to a widespread public outcry over process safety. Together with the passage of the UK Health and Safety at Work Act in the same year, it led to (and is often quoted in justification of) a more systematic approach to process safety in UK process industries. UK government regulation of plant processing or storing large inventories of hazardous materials is currently under the Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations 1999 (COMAH). In Europe, the Flixborough disaster and the Seveso disaster in 1976 led to development of the Seveso Directive in 1982 (currently Directive 2012/18/EU issued in 2012).

Glanford Power Station is an electricity generating plant located on the Flixborough industrial estate near Scunthorpe in North Lincolnshire. It generates around 13.5 megawatts (MW) of electricity, which is enough to provide power to about 32,000 homes. It was designed to generate electricity by the burning of poultry litter, and was only the second of this kind of power station in the world to have been built when it went into operation in 1993. The station is owned by Energy Power Resources (EPR) and operated by its subsidiary Fibrogen.

Pauper’s Drain is a small tributary of the River Trent in North Lincolnshire, England, and is 9 km (6 miles) long.It has a catchment area of 42 square kilometres(16 square miles) of flat arable, agricultural land to the east of the Isle of Axholme. The start of the drain is the outflow of the Crowle sewage treatment works; from there it flows in an eastwardly direction, south of the village of Eastoft before it reaches the Paupers pumping station at the side of the tidal River Trent, to the north of Amcotts. The station contains three pumps, which are used to maintain water levels in the drain by discharging water into the Trent as required. A sluice adjacent to the pumping station, also allows water to discharge by gravity during periods of tidal low water.The watercourse is essential for the land drainage of this low-lying area, which is the responsibility of the Isle of Axholme & North Nottinghamshire Water Level Management Board, the successor body to the Isle of Axholme Internal Drainage Board. The Board undertakes maintenance tasks such as annual mowing and rodding of the drain.The name is thought to be derived from the fact that it was constructed by labourers on the poor rate (or paupers). It was also considered to have been constructed prior to the 17th century drainage works of Vermuyden in the area.

Gunness (or Gunhouse) is a village and civil parish in North Lincolnshire, England. It is situated 3 miles (5 km) west from Scunthorpe, and on the east bank of the River Trent. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 2,462.On the Doncaster Road is the Grade II listed Rectory and Stable Block, built by James Fowler of Louth in 1864–66.

Glanford Park is a football stadium in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, England, and is the current home of National League North team Scunthorpe United. Opened in 1988 at a construction cost of £2.5 million, it was the first new purpose-built Football League stadium to be built in England for 33 years, since Southend United moved to Roots Hall in 1955. The stadium is Scunthorpe's second ground, with the Iron having previously played at the Old Show Ground from 1899 to 1988. The ground's record attendance was set at 9,077 for a Football League Cup Third round tie against Manchester United on 22 September 2010. Between 2019 and 2022, the stadium was renamed the "Sands Venue Stadium" as part of a sponsorship deal.

Crosby was a small hamlet in Lincolnshire which has grown into a suburb in the north of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire. Remnants of the old hamlet can be found in Old Crosby.The Anglican Parish Church is St George's Church, Crosby. Located on the corner of Digby Street and Frodingham Road, it was designed by the architect H.C. Corlette. Construction of the church began in 1924 and the building was consecrated in 1926. Its former clergy includes (John Harvard) Christopher Laurence who was Archdeacon Of Lindsey from 1985 to 1994.The Crosby Angel War Memorial is located on the corner of Frodingham Road and Sheffield Street West in the grounds of the former Crosby Primary School. It is inscribed with the names of 60 men from the area who died in World War One.The actress Liz Smith was born in Crosby in 1921.

Gunness railway station, later suffixed "and Burringham", is a former railway station in Gunness, Lincolnshire. Today trains call at the nearby Althorpe.The station was opened by the Trent, Ancholme and Grimsby Railway and was situated on a short branch from the main line.

Flixborough is a village and civil parish in North Lincolnshire, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 1,664. It is situated near the River Trent, approximately 3 miles (5 km) north-west from Scunthorpe. The village is noted for the 1974 Flixborough disaster. Flixborough is in the Burton upon Stather and Winterton ward of North Lincolnshire Council, and its civil parish boundary covers the southern part of Normanby Park. Its Grade II listed Anglican church, part of the Burton upon Stather Group of churches, is dedicated to All Saints. The village public house is The Flixborough Inn on High Street.

Gunhouse Wharf railway station was a goods station in Gunness, Lincolnshire. It was built by the Trent, Ancholme and Grimsby Railway to serve a small wharf on the River Trent. It left the main line at Gunhouse Junction, the main line making an end-on junction with the South Yorkshire Railway's line to Doncaster which had been extended over the River Trent by means of Keadby Swing Bridge.

The Berkeley Hotel is a Grade II listed public house and hotel in Scunthorpe. It was built in 1940 and is listed on the Campaign for Real Ale's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors. It was Grade II listed in 2015 by Historic England.

Keadby Bridge, more formally known as the King George V Bridge, crosses the River Trent near Althorpe and Keadby in Lincolnshire, England. It was designed by Alfred Charles Gardner FRSE MIME.

Althorpe railway station serves the village of Althorpe in North Lincolnshire, England. The station is also very close to the villages of Keadby, Gunness and Burringham. Most services are provided by Northern Trains who operate the station. Occasional services by TransPennine Express also call at this station. The station is unstaffed and has very limited facilities. There is a shelter on each platform, with a telephone and a help point for contact with Customer Services and British Transport Police on Platform 1 (eastbound); train running information is also provided by timetable posters on each side. Platform 2 (westbound) is accessible only by a footbridge with 50 steps.The station is on the west bank of the River Trent, to the west of the combined road-and-rail King George V Bridge, which was a lifting bridge until the late 1950s.
