Naval battle of Tarragona

Tarragona (Catalan: [tərəˈɣonə], Spanish: [taraˈɣona]; Phoenician: Tarqon; Latin: Tarraco) is a port city located in northeast Spain on the Costa Daurada by the Mediterranean Sea. Founded before the fifth century BC, it is the capital of the Province of Tarragona, and part of Tarragonès and Catalonia. It shares a border in the north with the Province of Barcelona and the Province of Lleida.

The Battle of Cissa was part of the Second Punic War. It was fought in the fall of 218 BC, near the Celtic town of Tarraco in north-eastern Iberia. A Roman army under Gnaeus Cornelius Scipio Calvus defeated an outnumbered Carthaginian army under Hanno, thus gaining control of the territory north of the Ebro River that Hannibal had just subdued a few months prior in the summer of 218 BC. This was the first battle that the Romans had ever fought in Iberia. It allowed the Romans to establish a secure base among friendly Iberian tribes, and due to the eventual success of the Scipio brothers in Spain, Hannibal looked for but never received reinforcements from Spain during the war.

Hispania Tarraconensis was one of three Roman provinces in Hispania. It encompassed much of the northern, eastern and central territories of modern Spain along with modern northern Portugal. Southern Spain, the region now called Andalusia was the province of Hispania Baetica. On the Atlantic west lay the province of Lusitania, partially coincident with modern-day Portugal.

Tarraco is the ancient name of the current city of Tarragona (Catalonia, Spain). It was the oldest Roman settlement on the Iberian Peninsula. It became the capital of Hispania Tarraconensis following the latter's creation during the Roman Empire. In 2000, the archaeological ensemble of Tarraco was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

It was built starting from 73 AD, by order of Emperor Vespasian, and remained in use until the 5th century. The worship area is now occupied by the Cathedral and other edifices.

The Roman theatre of Tarraco was a Roman theatre built in Tarraco (now Tarragona, Catalonia region) in the time of Augustus in the area of the local forum and the port, the planners took advantage of the steep slope of the hill to build part of the seating. Despite much of it having been destroyed during the 20th century, the remains of three fundamental parts of the structure are still visible; the cavea (seating), the orchestra and the scaena. The ruins can be seen from the purpose-built lookout point.

The Cathedral of Tarragona is a Roman Catholic church in Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. The edifice is located in a site previously occupied by a Roman temple dating to the time of Tiberius, a Visigothic cathedral, and a Moorish mosque. It was declared a national monument in 1905.

The Archdiocese of Tarragona (Latin, Tarraconensis) is a Roman Catholic ecclesiastical territory located in north-eastern Spain, in the province of Tarragona, part of the autonomous community of Catalonia. The archdiocese heads the ecclesiastical province of Tarragona, having Metropolitan authority over the suffragan dioceses of Girona, Lleida, Solsona, Tortosa, Urgell and Vic.The archdiocese, created in Roman times, was reestablished in 1118.

The National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona (Catalan: Museu Nacional Arqueològic de Tarragona, MNAT) is a public museum located in the city of Tarragona (Catalonia, Spain) focusing on its rich historical heritage and ancient remains. It includes archaeological findings of Tarraco's Roman and Early Christian past, as well as a library. The museum's origins lay in the 19th century, making it the oldest of its kind in Catalonia, with some collections assembling objects found from the 16th century onwards, but with most discoveries having taken place in the last 150 years.It is part of the Roman Europe network of museums.

The N-240 is a major east-west highway in Spain. It goes from Tarragona to Bilbao. It will be upgraded to the Autovía A-10. The road heads south east from Bilbao over Pto de Barazar (604m) to Vitoria. There it joins the Madrid-Francia highway the N-I to Pamplona. There it follows the rivers Eloz and Aragón to Jaca. It then joins the N-330 south to Huesca. The road heads out of the foothills of the Pyrenees through Barbastro and Monzón to Lleida. Thereafter it passes through Montsant and the Sierra de Roquerole to Montblanc. It then passes along the valley of the river Francolí to Tarragona.

The Wall of Tarragona (Catalan and Spanish: Muralla de Tarragona) is a wall located in Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. It was declared Bien de Interés Cultural in 1884.
