Aldwark, Hambleton

St Stephen's Church is the parish church of Aldwark, a village north-west of York, in North Yorkshire in England. The building was funded by Lady Frankland-Russell and was designed by Edward Buckton Lamb. John Betjeman noted that Lamb had been described as a "rogue architect", but stated that "the plan of the church is unusual yet effective both within and without... the almost detached tower and spire form a composition typical of the architect". The church was constructed between 1846 and 1853. In 1984, the church was Grade II listed. The church is constructed of alternating courses of herringbone brick and cobbles, with sandstone dressings. The roof is tiled, with the diagonals picked out in fishscale tiles. The church consists of a nave, short transepts in apsidal form, and a single-bay chancel. There is a two-stage tower to the north of the nave, supported by angle buttresses, and with a short spire. Inside, there are four stone cross piers, which support a complex wooden roof, based on a king post structure. The west window is in the Perpendicular style, and has glass designed by Charles Eamer Kempe in 1885.

One explanation is that it comes from the Old Norse words flagth and vath meaning ford of the female troll or witch. Alternatively it might come from the Old Norse flatha meaning flat meadow or from the Old English fleathe meaning water-lily. The place-name appears as Flathwayth in c. 1190.

Thorpe Underwood is a settlement and (as Thorpe Underwoods) a civil parish about 10 miles (16 km) north of York, in the former Harrogate district of North Yorkshire, England. In 2011 the parish had a population of 793. The parish touches Aldwark, Green Hammerton, Kirby Hall, Linton-on-Ouse, Little Ouseburn, Nun Monkton and Whixley. Thorpe Underwoods shares a parish council with Little Ouseburn and Kirby Hall called "Little Ouseburn Grouped Parish Council".

Queen Ethelburga's College has three sections: the Chapter House preparatory school, King's Magna middle school, and a Key Stage 4 (GCSE) and Sixth Form (A-Level) section. The second is the Faculty of Queen Ethelburga's and is purely Key Stage 4 (GCSE) and Sixth Form (A-Level and BTEC).In the 2023 A-Levels, the school saw 83.8% of its candidates score A*/A.

Little Ouseburn is a small village and civil parish in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire, England. It is situated near the A1(M) motorway and 6 miles (9.7 km) south-east of Boroughbridge. It consists of two roads, Main Street which is the residential area, and Church Lane which contains a Holy Trinity Church that is a grade I listed building. (see 'External Links' below for a survey of the burials in the churchyard) It also has a small brick bridge over a stream which leads to Great Ouseburn. According to the 2011 census data the total population of Little Ouseburn is 264.

Royal Air Force Linton-on-Ouse or more simply RAF Linton-on-Ouse (IATA: HRT, ICAO: EGXU) is a former Royal Air Force station at Linton-on-Ouse in North Yorkshire, England, 10 miles (16 km) north-west of York. It had satellite stations at RAF Topcliffe and Dishforth Airfield (British Army). The station opened in 1937. With the transfer of pilot training to RAF Valley on Anglesey in 2019, the station closed in 2020. In February 2021, the MOD confirmed that no alternative military use had been identified for the site and that it would therefore be sold.

The No. 1 Flying Training School (1 FTS) is the oldest military pilot training school in the world, currently used to deliver rotary training to aircrew of the British armed forces.
