The following is a timeline of the history of the city of Hamburg, Germany.

Hamburg (German: [ˈhambʊʁk] (listen), locally also [ˈhambʊɪ̯ç] (listen); Low Saxon: Hamborg [ˈhambɔːç] (listen)), officially the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg (German: Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg; Low Saxon: Friee un Hansestadt Hamborg), is the second-largest city in Germany after Berlin, as well as the overall 7th largest city and largest non-capital city in the European Union with a population of over 1.84 million. Hamburg's urban area has a population of around 2.5 million and its metropolitan area is home to more than five million people. The city lies on the River Elbe and two of its tributaries, the River Alster and the River Bille. One of Germany's 16 federated states, Hamburg is surrounded by Schleswig-Holstein to the north and Lower Saxony to the south. The official name reflects Hamburg's history as a member of the medieval Hanseatic League and a free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire. Before the 1871 Unification of Germany, it was a fully sovereign city state, and before 1919 formed a civic republic headed constitutionally by a class of hereditary grand burghers or Hanseaten. Beset by disasters such as the Great Fire of Hamburg, North Sea flood of 1962 and military conflicts including World War II bombing raids, the city has managed to recover and emerge wealthier after each catastrophe. Hamburg is Europe's third largest port, after Rotterdam and Antwerp. Major regional broadcaster NDR, the printing and publishing firm Gruner + Jahr and the newspapers Der Spiegel and Die Zeit are based in the city. Hamburg is the seat of Germany's oldest stock exchange and the world's oldest merchant bank, Berenberg Bank. Media, commercial, logistical, and industrial firms with significant locations in the city include multinationals Airbus, Blohm + Voss, Aurubis, Beiersdorf, and Unilever. Hamburg is also a major European science, research, and education hub, with several universities and institutions. The city enjoys a very high quality of living, being ranked 19th in the 2019 Mercer Quality of Living Survey.Hamburg hosts specialists in world economics and international law, including consular and diplomatic missions as the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, the EU-LAC Foundation, and the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning, multipartite international political conferences and summits such as Europe and China and the G20. Both former German chancellors Helmut Schmidt and Angela Merkel were born in Hamburg. The former Mayor of Hamburg, Olaf Scholz, has been the current German chancellor since December 2021. Hamburg is a major international and domestic tourist destination. The Speicherstadt and Kontorhausviertel were declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 2015. Hamburg's rivers and canals are crossed by around 2,500 bridges, making it the city with the highest number of bridges in Europe. Aside from its rich architectural heritage, the city is also home to notable cultural venues such as the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle concert halls. It gave birth to movements like Hamburger Schule and paved the way for bands including The Beatles. Hamburg is also known for several theatres and a variety of musical shows. St. Pauli's Reeperbahn is among the best-known European entertainment districts.

The Fontenay is a luxury hotel in Hamburg, Germany. The hotel is part of the consortium The Leading Hotels of the World.

The Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg is one of the larger universities of music in Germany. It was founded 1950 as Staatliche Hochschule für Musik (Public college of music) on the base of the former private acting school of Annemarie Marks-Rocke and Eduard Marks. Courses cover various musical genres, including church music, jazz, pop, composition, conducting, instrumental music as well as voice. The theatre academy offers courses in drama and opera and directing in these fields. A third academy offers scientific and educational degrees and qualifications (musicology, music education and therapy). The university is located in the prestigious Budge-Palais in Hamburg Rotherbaum at the Außenalster, close to the city centre.

The Hamburg Institute for Social Research is an independent private foundation whose scholarship is focused on both contemporary history and the social sciences. Founded in 1984 by Jan Philipp Reemtsma, it currently employs about 50 people with roughly 50% working in the research fields of sociology and history. The institute publishes a bimonthly journal called Mittelweg 36 and has its own publishing house.

The Hamburg University Archive is a central institution of the University of Hamburg. As a public archive, it serves research and teaching at the university, its self-administration and legal protection. A special feature of the Hamburg University Archive is the responsibility for university records management, which binds the archive very closely to the university administration.

Theater im Zimmer is a theatre in Hamburg, Germany. After the city cut its subsidies, the theatre ceased operations in 1999. The building was sold in 2002 and is now being used for concerts by the neighboring school of music, and for theatre productions. Additionally the villa is used for exclusive corporate and private events, in order to support the cultural events, concerts and theatre.

Der Hamburger und Germania Ruder Club (DHuGRC) is a rowing club from Rotherbaum, Hamburg, Germany. It was founded in 1836 as Der Hamburger Ruder Club, the club is the fourth oldest rowing club in the world (2nd if only counting non-academically affiliated clubs) after Brasenose College Boat Club, Jesus College Boat Club (Oxford) and Leander Club . The Germania Ruder Club, which was founded in 1854 merged with Der Hamburger Ruder Club in 1934, with the joint club adapting the current name. The current boathouse at Außenalster was opened in 2016.

The Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law (Max-Planck-Institut für ausländisches und internationales Privatrecht, MPIPRIV) is a legal research institute located in Hamburg, Germany. It is operated by the Max Planck Society. Founded in 1949, it is the successor institution of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Foreign and International Private Law, which was founded in 1926. Since 1956 it has been based in Hamburg's district of Rotherbaum.

St. Johannis-Harvestehude (St. John-Harvestehude), Hamburg, is a neo-gothic Protestant church built between 1880 and 1882 and considered one of the best-preserved turn-of-the-century monuments of Hamburg. Contrary to what the name might suggest, the church is located in the Rotherbaum quarter of Hamburg, between the streets of Turmweg and Mittelweg, near the Außenalster.

Außenalster (pronounced [ˈaʊsn̩ˌʔalstɐ] (listen)) or Outer Alster Lake is the larger one of two artificial lakes, which are formed by the Alster River and are both located within the city limits of Hamburg, Germany. The other lake is the Binnenalster. The Außenalster and its shores are used by the inhabitants of Hamburg for many sport and recreational purposes, such as sailing and rowing.

The Guest House of the Senate of Hamburg (German: Gästehaus des Hamburger Senats) is a villa on the Außenalster in the Hamburg borough of Uhlenhorst. It was built in 1868 as a residence for building materials trader Johann Friedrich Krogmann. Designed by Martin Haller, the villa has two and a half floors and white plaster facades. After Krogmann's death it was sold to merchant Adolf Oetling in 1880.The building was designated a Kulturdenkmal (cultural heritage site) by the city of Hamburg in 1958. In 1965 it became the guest house for "high-ranking and highest-ranking" guests of Hamburg, first accommodating Elizabeth II and her husband. Other notable guests include Leonid Brezhnev, the Dalai Lama, Jassir Arafat, Henry Kissinger and Donald Trump.The building was renovated in 1986 for 2.5 million mark. The internal decor was influenced by Christa von Dohnanyi, the wife of then-mayor Klaus von Dohnanyi, and features bright colors, mostly white, with rich stucco ornaments.
