Howick Falls

uMngeni Municipality (Zulu: UMasipala wase Mngeni) is a local municipality within the Umgungundlovu District Municipality, in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. The municipality is named after the uMngeni River that runs through the municipal area.

Howick is a town located in the UMngeni Local Municipality of KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa. The town is 1050 m above sea level, and about 88 kilometres from the port city of Durban. It enjoys warm summers and cool dry winters. A snappy chill descends upon Howick when snow falls on the nearby Drakensberg. The town is located on the N3 freeway, connecting it with the rest of South Africa. The town is the location of Howick Falls, which is a large waterfall that occurs when the Umgeni River falls 95 metres (311 feet) over dolerite cliffs on its way to the Indian Ocean. The waterfall was known as kwaNogqaza or "The Place of the Tall One" by the original Zulu inhabitants. There are several other waterfalls in the vicinity and all of them have claimed human lives. Near Howick are Cascade Falls (25 m) and Shelter Falls (37 m), while Karkloof Falls (105 m) is 16 km to the east. There are also a number of schools in Howick, including Howick High School.

Merrivale is a town in Umgungundlovu District Municipality in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. Village 145 km north-west of Durban and 5 km south-east of Howick. Named after Herman Merivale, Secretary of State for the Colonies in 1848.

Howick High School is a coeducational public school in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, established on 27 June 1967. Whilst it has a weekly boarding facility, known as Midmar House, which can accommodate up to 100 students who live in the local surrounding districts, Howick High School is not a full-time boarding school.

Midmar Nature Reserve, also known as Midmar Dam Nature Reserve, is a protected area around Midmar Dam on the Umgeni River. It is situated near to Howick in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Midmar Dam is a combined gravity & earth-fill type dam and recreation area located near Howick and Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Boating, swimming, waterskiing, picnicking, and fishing are popular pastimes at Midmar Dam. Each year, the Midmar Mile swimming race is held there, which organizers call "the world's largest open water swimming event". Over 20,000 entries were received for the 2009 event. Midmar Dam is located in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal. The dam's primary purpose is to serve for municipal and industrial use and its hazard potential has been ranked high (3). Morgenzon has camping and caravanning sites, both powered and non-powered. The dam also hosts a yacht club, and lock up storage facilities for boats. Midmar Dam is easily accessible from the N3 motorway.

Hilton College, more commonly referred to as Hilton, is a South African private boarding school for boys located near the town of Hilton in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands and is situated on a 1,762 ha (4,350 acre) estate that includes a 550 ha (1,400 acre) wildlife reserve and the 150 ha (370 acre) school campus Hilton College was founded in 1872 by Gould Arthur Lucas and Reverend William Orde Newnham as a non-denominational Christian boys' school. It follows English public school tradition and is a full boarding school, which means all pupils live at the school, and is one of only two such remaining single-sex boys' schools (the other being Michaelhouse) to continue this practice in South Africa. Hilton's 500 pupils each have access to a personal tutor and have a bespoke academic plan. It has maintained its position as the most expensive school in South Africa.

Cedara College of Agriculture is an agricultural college and research station near Howick, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, founded partly by Thomas Robertson Sim. The foundation stone of the "School of Agriculture and Forestry" was laid on 28 April 1905. The original prospectus advertised lectures in Forestry, Horticulture, Dairying, Veterinary Science, Chemistry, Elementary Mathematics, Bookkeeping, Farm Surveying, Zoology, and Fish Husbandry. Currently (2019), Cedara College (Agricultural Training Institute) offers a three-year National Diploma in Agricultural Management where students are able to specialize in either Animal Production or Crop Production. It provides vocational training in cultivated pastures, dairying, beef, small stock, poultry, pigs and fodder crops, agronomy, game, vegetables, and fruit production. In a joint venture, the College also hosts the BAgric (Agricultural Extension & Rural Resource Management) programme offered by UKZN. Cedara college also offer short courses through the Agricultural Skills Development unit(ASD). This unit offers vocational education and training programs to facilitate the linkage between structured learning and work experience in order to obtain registered qualification. currently(2021) ASD offers: Goat production skills program Broiler production skills program Layer production skills program Pig production skills program Beef production skills program Advanced animal production skills program Vegetable production skills program Plant production skills programA 60-ha area commonly known as "College Farm" has been set aside primarily for training students in animal husbandry and general farming practices. A beef herd and a sheep flock are kept specifically to train students in aspects of basic veterinary techniques, beef management practices (dehorning, castration, identification) and sheep management practices (foot care, castration, tail docking, identification). A small pig unit and small dairy are also kept for student training purposes. A broiler and layer unit meet the demands of poultry production practicals. A fully equipped laboratory is used for crop- and animal-related teaching and learning.

Lions River is a town in uMngeni Local Municipality in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa, situated between Lidgetton and Howick in the center of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. Its name originates from the last lion which was shot in the area in 1856.Lions River is a rural town on the Midlands Meander route, situated within the Dargle Valley. The Lions River Conservation District covers some 2,000 square kilometres (770 sq mi). The area is well known for farming, particularly dairy. Within the town itself, the Lions River Trading Post is the most popular attraction.

Hilton is a small town that lies near the city of Pietemaritzburg in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. In 1872 the Reverend William Orde Newnham opened Hilton College on a large estate 7.8km north of the town, which is now one of South Africa's leading private schools.

Linpark High School is a South African co-educational public boarding school situated on Claude Forsyth Rd, in Boughton, a northern suburb of Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. The school's curriculum has a technical bias, with courses in subjects such as motor mechanics and electronics in addition to more traditional subjects such as maths and science. Although it has boarding facilities, most students are day pupils, living locally. Originally an all-white school, the first black pupils were admitted in 1991.
