Waikanae railway station

Waikanae (English: , Māori pronunciation: [ˈwaikaˈnaɛ]) is a town on the Kāpiti Coast, 60 km (37 mi) north of the Wellington, New Zealand. The name is a Māori word meaning "waters" (wai) "of the grey mullet". The area surrounding the town is notable for its 2.4-kilometre-long (1.5 mi) beach, the Waikanae River estuary, the Kapiti Marine Reserve, and Kapiti Island, which lies 4 km (2.5 mi) offshore in the Tasman Sea. The town is considered one of the top retirement destinations in the Wellington Region, because of its year-round mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and less wind than Wellington. The town is 8 km (5.0 mi) northeast of Paraparaumu, and 15 km (9.3 mi) southwest of Ōtaki. The Waikanae railway station, is the northernmost station in the Metlink passenger rail network linking with Wellington railway station in Central Wellington.

Charles Fleming Retirement Village is a retirement village in Waikanae, New Zealand. Opened in 2013 and named after Sir Charles Fleming, it houses 140 beds with a resident capacity of over 400. It was built by Ryman Healthcare with a construction cost of $100 million. It includes a dementia facility, independent units and townhouses. The main block of apartments is three storeys high. The village also has a bowling green, gym, hair dresser, library, spa, shop, and a swimming pool.

Waikanae Park is a cricket ground in Waikanae, Wellington, New Zealand. The ground held its first List A match when Central Districts played Auckland in the 1993/94 Shell Cup. The ground later held five further List A matches, the last of which came in the 2004/05 State Shield when Central Districts played Wellington. Central Districts Women used Victoria Park as a home venue in two fixtures in the 2001/02 State League.

Ngā Manu Nature Reserve is a nature and wildlife reserve in Waikanae, New Zealand, on the Kāpiti Coast of the North Island. In addition to offering a sanctuary for native birds and other animals, the 14 hectares (35 acres) reserve preserves the largest remnant of coastal lowland swamp forest on the Kāpiti Coast. Ngā Manu contains aviaries housing native birds such as kākā, kākāriki, scaup, whio and kea, enclosures with tuatara, and a nocturnal house with kiwi and morepork. Bird life in the reserve comprises up to 60 different bird species, the most visible being common local birds such as kererū, tūī, black swan, paradise duck and pūkeko. The reserve is not surrounded by a pest-exclusion fence, and as a result the native bush area of the reserve does not host any critically endangered animals, however, Ngā Manu is regularly involved in wider conservation efforts and breeding programmes.

The Maungakōtukutuku Stream is a stream on the Kāpiti Coast of New Zealand's North Island. Its headwaters are in the Maungakotukutuku area and it is a tributary of the Waikanae River. Consideration has been given to damming the stream in order to increase the Kāpiti Coast's water supply.[1]

Reikorangi is a rural locality on the Kāpiti Coast in New Zealand's North Island. It is inland, behind Waikanae in the Akatarawa Valley of the Tararua Ranges. The Ngatiawa River and Reikorangi Stream both meet the Waikanae River in Reikorangi. Reikorangi contains a church, a monastery, and formerly contained a school, which closed in 1970 due to the declining population of the small locality. A historic Howe truss bridge collapsed in 2017. Attractions include the Reikorangi Pottery Park and Cafe. The national Te Araroa Trail also passes through.

The Rangiora River is a river of the Wellington Region of the North Island of New Zealand. It is a tributary of the Waikanae River, which it joins 5 kilometres (3 mi) southeast of Waikanae.

The Ngatiawa River is a river on the Kāpiti Coast of New Zealand's North Island that is a major tributary of the Waikanae River. Its headwaters are in the Tararua Range and it flows north and northwest through the Akatarawa Valley to Reikorangi, where it meets the Waikanae River.

Otaihanga railway station was a flag station between Paraparaumu and Waikanae on the Wellington-Manawatu Line in New Zealand, when the line was run by the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company. This line is now part of the Kapiti section of the North Island Main Trunk. The station was opened on 2 August 1886. The two ends of the line met at Otaihanga on 27 October, and the last spike was driven at a public ceremony by Governor William Jervois on 3 November 1886 before more than a thousand people. The first revenue-earning train, a stock train from Longburn to Johnsonville with 355 sheep and 60 head of cattle had run on 30 October. The last spike monument is now in the carpark at Southward Car Museum. The station served Otaihanga, a then-rural area between Paraparaumu and Waikanae which is now mainly residential. The platform was on the east side of the line according to Cassells, who shows a blind siding on the west side of the line with the south end joining the main line. The station had a waiting shed, and was two miles and nine chains (3.2 km) north of Paraparaumu. A 1903 WMR advertisement says that the station will be closed from 30 May 1903. Two references say that the station closed in 1902, but neither give a date. Scoble says that the station closed in 1902. Hoy says that Otaihanga closed in 1902 or in "company days". A WMR newspaper advertisement of 12 November 1902 names the station as one of several stations (along with Khandallah, Tawa Flat, Pukerua and Hadfield) where certain trains would not stop (indicating that the station was still open on 12 November).

The Kapiti Urban Area is a statistical area that was defined by Statistics New Zealand to cover a group of urban settlements of the Kāpiti Coast District, in the Wellington Region. It was classified as a main urban area under the New Zealand Standard Areas Classification 1992 because its population exceeded 30,000. The settlements comprise (north to south): Waikanae Paraparaumu (including Otaihanga, Raumati Beach and Raumati South) Paekākāriki The largest settlement is Paraparaumu. Raumati may be considered a suburb of Paraparaumu or a separate town in its own right – there are no legal definitions for towns in New Zealand. Kapiti Urban Area is better described as a commuter area of Wellington than an independent city. Under Statistical Standard for Geographic Areas 2018, Kapiti Urban Area was split into separate urban areas for the three settlements. The Kāpiti Coast District also includes the settlements of Te Horo and Ōtaki, which are outside Kapiti Urban Area.

The Southward Car Museum is an automobile museum and event centre in Otaihanga, New Zealand. It was established by Len Southward in the 1970s to house his collection of over 450 vehicles and several aircraft and is now run by a charitable trust. The museum is just north of Paraparaumu on the Kāpiti Coast, about an hour's drive from Wellington and situated just east of the North Island Main Trunk railway and State Highway 1, on Otaihanga Road. The purpose-built building includes a 6000 square metre exhibition hall, engineering workshop, gift shop and small cafe, all set in park-like grounds. The building also incorporates the 474-seat Southward Theatre, which features the 1929 Wurlitzer Unit Orchestra theatre organ that was originally installed in the Civic Theatre in Auckland.
