Newarthill

Motherwell (Scottish Gaelic: Tobar na Màthar, Scots: Mitherwall) was a local government district in the Strathclyde region of Scotland from 1975 to 1996, lying to the south-east of the regional capital Glasgow.

Dalziel Park is an area located between the villages of Carfin, Cleland and Newarthill in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. Other nearby settlements include the large town of Motherwell and the new town of Ravenscraig. The area consists of a residential estate, a sports facility (regarded as one of the best in Scotland), a golf course and a clubhouse. It is also used as the home venue for the local rugby team Dalziel, as well as the training ground for the local professional football team Motherwell.

Cleland is a village near Motherwell and Wishaw in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. As of 2018, it has a population of about 3,000. The village has a strong coal mining heritage, and is a typical example of a working class village in North Lanarkshire and the Glasgow area. Due to its location, despite being at the heart of North Lanarkshire, the village is isolated, geographically and culturally, from surrounding towns such as Motherwell, Shotts and Wishaw.

Cleland (Old) railway station was opened in 1867 on the Cleland to Morningside Junction line that had opened in 1864. The extension of the Cleland Branch on the line of the old Wishaw and Coltness Railway joined the Coltness Branch section of the Wishaw and Coltness Railway via the Coltness Ironworks and then as stated it continued to Morningside. Today's Cleland railway station on the Shotts Line was opened as Bellside on 9 July 1869 by the Caledonian Railway, renamed Omoa after the Omoa Ironworks on 1 October 1879 and finally named Cleland on 1 October 1941 after the original Cleland had closed.

North Lanarkshire (Scots: North Lanrikshire; Scottish Gaelic: Siorrachd Lannraig a Tuath) is one of 32 council areas of Scotland. It borders the northeast of the City of Glasgow and contains many of Glasgow's suburbs and commuter towns and villages. It also borders East Dunbartonshire, Falkirk, Stirling, South Lanarkshire and West Lothian. The council covers parts of the traditional counties of Dunbartonshire, Lanarkshire and Stirlingshire. The area was formed in 1996, from the districts (within Strathclyde region) of Cumbernauld and Kilsyth, Motherwell, and Monklands, as well as part of the Strathkelvin district (Chryston and Auchinloch), which operated between 1975 and 1996. As a new single-tier authority, North Lanarkshire became responsible for all functions previously performed by both the regional council and the district councils.

The area of the district was combined with those of Cumbernauld and Kilsyth and Motherwell districts and part of Strathkelvin to become North Lanarkshire unitary council area. The name of "Monklands" originated in the grant of lands in the area to the monks of the Cistercian Abbey of Newbattle, Midlothian in 1162. From the seventeenth century the area was formed into the two parishes of New Monkland and Old Monkland.Although the council is gone, the area is often informally referred to as Monklands. Indeed, the local hospital (in Airdrie) used to be called Monklands District General Hospital, and football matches between the two senior teams in the area, Airdrieonians and Albion Rovers, are often referred to as Monklands Derbies.

Newhouse is a hamlet and major road interchange located in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, sited immediately east of the Eurocentral industrial park, two miles west of the village of Salsburgh, 1.8 miles (2.9 km) east of Holytown and about 4 miles (6.4 km) north east of Motherwell. It consists of four small houses, a Premier Inn hotel and Beefeater restaurant an independently operated Esso petrol station under the name "Peggy White's Ltd"and a garden centre. It also has a large industrial park, which is the United Kingdom base for several multinational companies including Terex, Honeywell and the Newhouse research site and the Scottish distribution centre for The Co-operative Food. It was formerly a terminus for a railway line from Airdrie, and had several coal mines. Since the end of coal mining in the area these have gone, along with most of the inhabitants. It was also a historic crossing place for north–south and east–west traffic, being on the two former trunk route of the A8 between Glasgow and Edinburgh and also on the A73 from Cumbernauld and the north, to Carlisle and the south and west of England. The road junction on which the hamlet is situated remains very busy and is prone to traffic congestion at peak times, since it is where the current A8, M8, A73 (now detrunked and supplanted by the M74), A775 and B7066 all meet. It is notorious for its bad weather, as it is one of the highest points on the M8. The height also enables it to command a view over most of the Clyde Valley and Campsie Fells. Keir Hardie, the founder of the Labour Party and one of the first two Labour Party MPs elected to the UK Parliament was born in a cottage on the western edge of Newhouse. This cottage still exists on Legbrannock Avenue, now surrounded by the Newhouse Industrial Estate.

Carfin railway station is a railway station serving both Carfin and Newarthill in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is 14 miles (22 km) southeast of Glasgow Central railway station on the Shotts Line between Glasgow and Edinburgh. It contains two platforms; one for trains in the direction of Glasgow, and the other for trains to Edinburgh Waverley via Shotts. Like the following stop on the Shotts Line, Holytown, the location of the station is ambiguous. It is located on the border between Carfin and Newarthill, for much of its recent history closer to a housing estate in the latter. It is now bordered immediately on both sides by housing developments.

Carfin Lourdes Grotto, a Roman Catholic shrine in Scotland dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes, was created in the early twentieth century. The "Carfin Grotto", as the shrine is locally referred to, was the brainchild of Father, later Canon Thomas N. Taylor (died 1963), parish priest of St. Francis Xavier's Parish in the small, mining village of Carfin, which lies two miles east of Motherwell, in the West of Scotland. Following a trip to France's principal Marian shrine at Lourdes, Canon Taylor's vision was to build a religious memorial in honour of Our Blessed Lady based on the template of the Grotto of Massabielle. To realize this vision became his life's work. Since its opening in the early 1920s, the "grotto" has attracted pilgrims in the hundreds of thousands and its environs have been modified and enhanced with rich Catholic symbols and buildings. The grotto shrine offers a pilgrimage season with Sunday processions, rosaries, outdoor Masses and dedicated Feast Day events which run annually from early May until late September.

Newhouse railway station served the hamlet of Newhouse, North Lanarkshire, Scotland from 1888 to 1930 on the Airdrie to Newhouse Branch.

Wishaw House was a large mansion located in Wishaw, Scotland. Once the family seat of the Belhavens and Hamiltons, the mansion was abandoned by the 20th century and was demolished, now nothing more than a ruin in the woodland by the South Calder Water.

Cleland railway station is a railway station serving the village of Cleland, near Motherwell in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. Built on the Cleland and Midcalder Line it was originally named 'Omoa', after the nearby ironworks, until Cleland (Old) on the Wishaw and Coltness Railway closed in 1930. It is located on the Shotts Line, 15+3⁄4 miles (25.3 km) east of Glasgow Central towards Edinburgh Waverley via Shotts. The station has two platforms, connected by a stairway footbridge, and CCTV. It is managed by ScotRail.
