Kembla Grange railway station

The Kembla Grange rail disaster was a rail disaster that occurred on the early morning of 20 October 2021 near Kembla Grange Railway Station, New South Wales, Australia. The train derailed and collided at a level crossing, when a stolen van was placed in the middle of the crossing.

Kembla Grange is a suburb west of Berkeley, in the City of Wollongong. At the 2016 census, it had a population of 252.The Kembla Grange Racecourse and its railway station are located there.

Farmborough Heights is a southern, medium-high wealth suburb in the city of Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia. It is situated to the west of Unanderra in the foothills of Mount Kembla. The suburb mainly consists of separate residential dwellings, but also has a general store. It once had a take away, though the take away and many other stores were demolished in 2010 to make room for more housing. Farmborough Heights is situated on two ridges, both are the lesser slopes of Mount Kembla. The main access road to the suburb is Farmborough Road. However, Waples Road and Panorama Drive also provide major access to the suburb. According to the 2016 census there are 4,198 people residing in Farmborough Heights, with 2,028 (48.4%) being males, and 2,165 (51.6%) being females.Subdivisions in the last 10–15 years have seen the establishment of more substantial residences. Many of the homes in Farmborough Heights enjoy the elevated location and views of both the sea and mountains. Farmborough Road Public School is the local government primary school located in the adjoining suburb of Unanderra, and is also home to the Families at Farmborough Community Centre catering for children of preschool age. Illawarra Sports High in Berkeley is the local government high school. Figtree High School is the next closest High School located just 4 kilometres away. Church based school options include Cedars and St Pius primary schools; and St Mary's Star of the Sea, Edmund Rice, Illawarra Christian School, Holy Spirit or Corpus Christi high schools. Farmborough was originally 3 separate farms. These farmhouses are still standing today. One is on Silvertop, one is on Farmborough Road (approx. 300 metres from the general store) and one is located just to the east of Coachwood Drive. These were the three original houses of Farmborough. Today, 2000+ houses are on land once owned by three different farmers.

Brownsville is a suburb of the City of Wollongong.Brownsville was the location of the first settlement at Dapto. With the construction of the South Coast railway, Dapto developed around the railway station, which was further south. Brownsville was named after George Brown who received a grant of 300 acres, south of Mullet Creek, in 1833. His "Ship Inn" became the centre of the farming community.

Kanahooka is a southern suburb in Wollongong City Council. It has a few shops and a playground. Situated on Lake Illawarra is a Park with a playground. It has a public school (Hayes Park Public School) and a high school (Kanahooka High School).

Dapto Smelting Works, also known as Lake Illawarra Smelting Works, was a smelter for base metals and gold-bearing pyrite and telluride ores, at modern-day Kanahooka, near Dapto, New South Wales. The smelter operated, from 1897 to 1905. It also produced sulphuric acid, some of which it used itself as a reagent. The smelter was established and first operated by Smelting Company of Australia Limited. From 1902, the smelter was owned and operated by another company, Smelting and Refining Company of Australia Limited, until that company went into voluntary liquidation, in 1905. The relocation of smelter operations, to Port Kembla, by then owner Australian Smelting Company, was abandoned in 1908, and was not revived by its successor Australian Smelting Corporation. None of those four companies should be confused with, Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Company of Australia Limited (ER&S), which operated a copper smelting and refining plant at Port Kembla, from 1908. Australian Smelting Company, as referred to here, should not be confused with the nearly identically-named company, Australian Smelting Company Proprietary Limited, that earlier had operated a smelter at Dry Creek, South Australia. In the years when the Dapto Smelting Works operated, the area where it was located—now Kanahooka—was sometimes referred to as 'Lake Illawarra', but that should not be confused with the modern-day suburb of Lake Illawarra, which is on the opposite side of the lake, to the south of its entrance.

Kanahooka High School is a government-funded co-educational comprehensive secondary day school, located in Kanahooka, 15 kilometres (9 mi) southwest of the city of Wollongong, in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia. Established in 1974, the school enrolled for approximately 600 students in 2018, from Year 7 to Year 12, of whom 16 percent identified as Indigenous Australians and eight percent were from a language background other than English. The school is operated by the NSW Department of Education; the principal is Christine Toohey. Students are drawn from a catchment area that covers the southwestern part of the City of Wollongong.

Illawarra Christian School (ICS) is a co-educational Christian parent-controlled school in Cordeaux Heights, Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia that was established in 1982 and it offers from Preschool to Year 12 education. It began its Prep program in 2008. The school currently caters for more than 650 students across all years.

Mount Kembla is a suburb and a mountain in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia. The suburb, a semi-rural township of Wollongong, gets its name from the mountain, located on the Illawarra escarpment, is derived from an Aboriginal word, kembla, meaning "plenty of game". The satellite localities of Kembla Heights, Windy Gully, Cordeaux Valley and Kembla Village are comprised within the suburb of Mount Kembla that at the 2016 census had a population of 1,068.The summit of Mount Kembla has an elevation of 534 metres (1,752 ft) above sea level.The area surrounding Mount Kembla is a coal mining area, notable for the Mount Kembla Mine disaster of 1902 in which 96 people lost their lives.

Berkeley is a suburb of Wollongong, New South Wales. The suburb is located in Wollongong's southern suburbs, on the northern shore of Lake Illawarra, and is one of the city's most populous suburbs. At the 2016 census, it had a population of 7,605.

Fo Guang Shan Nan Tien Temple (Chinese: 佛光山南天寺; pinyin: Fóguāngshān Nántiān Sì; lit. 'Southern Heaven Temple') is a Buddhist temple complex located in Berkeley, on the southern outskirts of the Australian city of Wollongong, approximately 80 kilometres (50 mi) south of Sydney.Nan Tien is one of the branch temples of the Taiwanese Fo Guang Shan Buddhist order, founded in 1967 by Hsing Yun, which has over 120 branches worldwide. The temple is one of the largest Buddhist temples in the southern hemisphere.

Unanderra ( YOU-nən-derr-ə) is a suburb of Wollongong in New South Wales, Australia. It is located approximately 6 km south-west of the Wollongong CBD. It is bordered to the west by Farmborough, Cordeaux Heights and Farmborough Heights in the Mount Kembla foothills, the north by Figtree, the east by Berkeley and Flagstaff Hill, site of the Nan Tien Temple, and the south by Kembla Grange. Unanderra is both a residential suburb, mostly to the west of the Princes Highway and industrial, to the east. Along the highway is a strip of shops, including Woolworths and several speciality stores. Two distinctive and beautiful buildings in Unanderra are the Catholic Church and the Syriac Orthodox Church. The Immaculate Conception Catholic Church was opened in 1954 and subsequently extended in 1997 and is located at 48 Princes Highway, Unanderra. Saint Thomas Syriac Orthodox Church in Central Road, Unanderra, was opened in 2007. Unanderra has several local attractions including an old school building, several historic houses and a community centre. The community centre is housed in the former Central Illawarra Municipal Council Chambers, opened in 1901. This operated until the merging of the North Illawarra and Central Illawarra chambers to create the City of Greater Wollongong in 1947. The Unanderra Branch Library opened in 1955 within the centre and was enlarged in 1960. The suburb lies on the Illawarra coastal plain, with its west border in the lower foothills of Mount Kembla. From the highway it is possible to see Mount Kembla and it has a distinctly different shape compared to other views of it.
