Kisenyama Dam

The Amagase Dam (天ヶ瀬ダム) is an arch dam on the Uji River just upstream from Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. The main purpose of the dam is flood control but it supports a hydroelectric power station and creates the lower reservoir for the Kisenyama Pumped Storage Plant. The dam itself serves a 92 MW power station while the pumped-storage power station upstream has a 466 MW capacity. Construction on the dam began in 1955 and it was complete in 1964. The pumped-storage power station became operational in 1970. Both plants are owned by Kansai Electric Power Company.

Mimurotoji (Japanese: 三室戸寺) is Temple #10 of the 33 Kannon temples in Japan, located in Uji. When the temple was built in ancient times, it was meant to shield Kyoto from evil spirits. Its gardens have 20,000 azaleas and 1000 rhododendrons and it is a 20-minute walk from Mimurodo Station.

Kōshō-ji (Japanese: 興聖寺) is a Sōtō Zen in temple in Japan. It bears an abbreviated form of the name of the temple established by Eihei Dōgen in Kyoto, Kōshōhōrin-ji, but it was established four centuries after that temple was destroyed, and in a different location.

The Ujigami Shrine (宇治上神社, Ujigami-jinja) is a Shinto shrine in the city of Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. The shrine was built as a guardian shrine for the nearby Byōdō-in, and is adjacent to the Uji Shrine. In 1994, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto". The honden and haiden have been designated by the Agency for Cultural Affairs as National Treasures in the category shrines.The Ujigami Shrine is dedicated to the Emperor Ōjin and his sons, the imperial princes Uji no Wakiiratsuko and Emperor Nintoku. Uji no Wakiiratsuko committed suicide to solve a dispute over the imperial succession, and the shrine was built in his honor.The honden of the Ujigami Shrine is known as the oldest example of nagare-zukuri style of shrine architecture in Japan. In this style of architecture the three inner shrine structures are built side-by-side, with the structure in the middle being larger than those to the left and right. The honden dates to the late Heian period (794 – 1185). The haiden is built in the shinden-zukuri style, and its roof in the sugaruhafu style. The haiden dates to the Kamakura period (1185 – 1333). The Kasuga Shrine, also within the shrine precinct, dates to the same period. The shrine is noted for its freshwater spring.Ujigami Shrine was found via digital dendrochronology to be the oldest original Shinto shrine in Japan. The Nara Research Institute for Cultural Properties determined that the shrine was built in approximately 1060, which closely matches the written account of the founding of the shrine.Until the Meiji Period (1868 – 1912) the Uji and Ujigami shrines were collectively known as the Rikyukamisha. The annual festival of the Ujigami Shrine is held on May 5.

Uji Shrine (宇治神社, Uji-jinja) is a Shinto shrine located in the city of Uji in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. It is adjacent to the Ujigami Shrine.

The Tale of Genji Museum is in Uji, Kyoto, Japan. It displays the world of the early 11th century Japanese classic novel The Tale of Genji with projected images, models, and exhibitions. The culture of the Imperial Court of the Heian period, the aristocrats' costumes, and the furnishings of their residences are shown.The last ten chapters of The Tale of Genji are set in Uji; the hero is Kaoru Genji (a son of Hikaru Genji). The story of these chapters is reproduced with great realism using a scrim and life-size set. Visitors are introduced to the story line and main characters. A short film based on the "Uji chapters" and created solely for the museum is presented in the movie room. There is a library with a collection of books about The Tale of Genji. The museum opened in 1998.

Minamoto no Yoshinaka tried to wrest power from his cousins Yoritomo and Yoshitsune, seeking to take command of the Minamoto clan. To that end, he burned the Hōjūji Palace, and kidnapped Emperor Go-Shirakawa. However, his cousins Noriyori and Yoshitsune caught up with him soon afterwards, following him across the Bridge over the Uji, New Year's Day, 1184, which Yoshinaka had torn up to impair their crossing.This was an ironic reversal of the first Battle of the Uji, only four years earlier. Much as the Taira did in that first battle, Minamoto no Yoshitsune led his horsemen across the river, and defeated Yoshinaka.

The Hayaagari Tile Kiln ruins (隼上り瓦窯跡, Hayaagari kawara gama ato) is an archaeological site with the ruins of a Nara period kiln, located in the Udo neighborhood of the city of Uji, Kyoto Prefecture in the Kinai region of Japan. It was designated a National Historic Site of Japan in 1986.

Byōdō-in (平等院, "Temple of Equality") is a Buddhist temple in the city of Uji in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan, built in the late Heian period. It is jointly a temple of the Jōdo-shū (Pure Land) and Tendai-shū sects.

Tsuen Tea (通圓, Tsūen) is the oldest tea house in Japan, founded in 1160 in Uji city, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. It is also the 13th oldest company in Japan, and the 30th oldest in the world, appearing on the List of oldest companies. Located across from Uji Station on the Keihan Uji line, just east of Uji Bridge (originally constructed in 646), successive generations of Tsuen owners provided tea to travelers as "bridge guardians." The shop is the subject of a Kyōgen farce called "Tsuen" and also appears in Eiji Yoshikawa's epic novel Musashi. Today it is operated by the 24th generation of the Tsuen family.

Uji Station (宇治駅, Uji-eki) is a train station on the Keihan Railway Uji Line in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan, and it is the terminal station on the Uji Line. The station building, designed by architect Hiroyuki Wakabayashi, was awarded the Good Design Award in 1996. In 2000, the station was selected as one of "Best 100 Stations in Kinki Region" by Kinki District Transport Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

Mimurodo Station (三室戸駅, Mimurodo-eki) is a train station located in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. The station is a 20-minute walk from the Mimurotoji temple.
