Balerno Community High School

The Water of Leith Walkway is a public footpath and cycleway that runs alongside the small river of the same name through Edinburgh, Scotland, from Balerno to Leith. The concept of a public path first appeared in 1949, but the necessary construction work was not begun until after 1973. Nowadays, it provides access to many interesting sights, like the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and the Dean Gallery.

Balerno (; Scottish Gaelic: Baile Àirneach, IPA:[ˈpaleˈɛːɾʲnəx]; Scots: Balerno or Balernie) is a village on the outskirts of Edinburgh, Scotland situated 8 miles (13 kilometres) south-west of the city centre, next to Currie and then Juniper Green. Traditionally in the county of Midlothian it now administratively falls within the jurisdiction of the City of Edinburgh Council. The village lies at the confluence of the Water of Leith and the Bavelaw Burn. In the 18th and 19th century, the area was home to several mills using waterpower. In the 20th century, the mills closed and the village now forms a residential suburb of Edinburgh.

The Malleny House and Garden is an historic house and garden owned by the National Trust for Scotland in Balerno, six miles southwest of Edinburgh. The gardens are notable for its large yew trees, as well as one of the largest rose collections in Scotland. According to Historic Environment Scotland, Malleny is noted for its outstanding architectural and horticultural value including its national collection of heritage shrub roses. The house, gardens and adjoining estate buildings are Category A listed.

The Balerno line was a short loop railway in the southern suburbs of Edinburgh, Scotland. It was 6 miles in length, leaving the main Caledonian Railway Edinburgh to Carstairs line at Slateford, and rejoining it at Ravelrig. It was built by the Caledonian Railway mainly to service the many manufacturing enterprises situated along the upper Water of Leith, and passenger trains also ran. The line opened in 1874. As well as at Balerno, stations were constructed at Colinton, Juniper Green and Currie. The line was steeply graded. In the 1930s the line increased in popularity for residential and leisure travel, but the passenger business never reached the desired level, and the line was closed to passenger trains in 1943. In the 1960s the mills that sustained the goods train business closed down, and the line closed completely in 1967.

Balerno railway station was opened in 1874 and served the area of the village of Balerno that now forms part of the city of Edinburgh. Although primarily built as a goods line, with a dedicated goods station at Balerno, serving the many mills on the Water of Leith, a passenger service was provided by the Caledonian Railway using the Balerno Loop and after grouping by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, seeing formal closure to passenger traffic shortly after nationalisation. The station was the only one with a separately served goods station on the 'loop' line and lay in rural surroundings that had been popular with families having a day out in the country.

Lennox Tower is a ruined fifteenth-century tower house at Lymphoy, near the Water of Leith, between Balerno and Currie, 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) south-west of Edinburgh, Scotland.

Currie Community High School is a six-year comprehensive school serving the south-west of the City of Edinburgh, Scotland. The school roll currently stands at 727 of whom 20% attend as a result of parental placing requests. The school's feeder primary schools are Currie Primary School, Nether Currie Primary School and Juniper Green Primary School. Several Labour Party politicians have made visits, including former First Minister Henry McLeish, also more recently First Minister Jack McConnell, Sarah Boyack and David Miliband. It has also been visited by William Hague and Malcolm Rifkind. The school is a Community High School, offering classes, activities and events to the local community.

Curriehill (Scots: Curriehull, Scottish Gaelic: Cnoc a' Churraich) is a suburb of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. It is north-west of Currie. Curriehill railway station is the western terminus of the Edinburgh Crossrail. These trains continue to Glasgow Central via West Lothian and North Lanarkshire.

Curriehill railway station is located in Currie, a southwestern suburb of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, not far from the main campus of Heriot-Watt University. It lies on the Shotts Line, which runs from Glasgow Central to Edinburgh Waverley by way of Shotts. The station has two platforms, connected by a stairway footbridge, and is equipped with CCTV. It is managed by ScotRail.

Riccarton is an area in Edinburgh's Green Belt, in Scotland. It is mainly undeveloped, with much farmland and few houses. Riccarton is to the west of the Edinburgh City Bypass (the A720), and is known for being the location of Heriot-Watt University's main campus, including Oriam, Scotland's National Performance Centre for Sport which opened to the public in August 2016. There have been a number of controversies over potential development in the area in recent years.The area is bordered by Currie, Juniper Green and Curriehill to the south, The Calders (Wester Hailes) to the east, and Hermiston to the north.

The European Energy Centre (EEC) Institute is an independent professional educational body for the renewable energy, energy efficiency and electric vehicles sectors. The EEC is also the first Renewable Energy Institute in Europe and in the Western Hemisphere. The EEC along with the affiliated Centro Studi Galileo runs a biennial European Conference on renewable energy, heating and cooling applications. EEC's focus is on renewable energy education, training and conferences to help develop a workforce capable of designing, installing, repairing and maintaining renewable energy equipment and managing renewable energy projects.The European Energy Centre and Centro Studi Galileo work with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) the Intergovernmental International Institute of Refrigeration and Centro Studi Galileo, along with Universities such as Edinburgh Napier University and Heriot-Watt University in promoting the use of renewable energy technologies across the United Kingdom.
