Narborough railway station

Narborough is a large village and civil parish in the Blaby district of Leicestershire, England, around six miles (ten kilometres) southwest of Leicester. The population of the civil parish (including Littlethorpe) at the 2011 census was 8,498.The name is derived from the Old English north burh, meaning "north fort or stronghold". At the 2001 Census, the parish had a population of 8,402.Surrounding villages include Enderby, Whetstone, Littlethorpe, Cosby, and Huncote.

Littlethorpe is a small village approximately six miles (ten kilometres) south of Leicester, separated from the village of Narborough by the Leicester to Birmingham railway line, and the River Soar of which it is the true discharge. The village has expanded since the Second World War most noticeably through the creation of two housing estates, the Jelson estate and Barratt estate. Housing continues to be built, Parnell Close being completed during 2005.

Blaby is a local government district in Leicestershire, England. The district is named after the village of Blaby, although the council is based in Narborough. The district covers an area lying south-west of the city of Leicester. Several of the district's settlements form part of the wider Leicester Urban Area, including Glenfield, where Leicestershire County Council has its headquarters at County Hall, and the town of Braunstone. The neighbouring districts are Hinckley and Bosworth, Charnwood, Leicester, Oadby and Wigston, Harborough and Rugby.

Narborough Hall is a Grade II* listed building in Narborough in Leicestershire. Believed to date from 1596 this Elizabethan manor house was built by James Meade, a local landowner. However, it was only after it was extensively remodelled in the mid-19th century that it became known as Narborough Hall. It is notable because of its construction from local pink granite. The property was first listed in 1952, but the following years saw a sad decline and culminated in a threat to demolish the house in the early 1970s. When the current owners Paul and Wendy Broadley bought it in 1976 it was a dilapidated wreck. Years of extensive renovation followed, much of the work being undertaken by Paul himself, and the Hall was brought back to its former glory. To help the funding of the considerable undertaking and the maintenance of the house, the Broadleys opened the front rooms of the house as a shop in 1992. Now run by Paul and Wendy’s daughter and son-in-law Sophie and Simon, the shop has grown in size and now occupies five rooms on the ground floor.

Carlton Hayes Hospital, Narborough, Leicestershire was the psychiatric hospital of Leicestershire from 1907 to 1995.

Narborough Bog is an 8.5-hectare (21-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Narborough in Leicestershire. It is owned and managed by the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust.This site has a large area of common reed on peat, and there is also wet woodland, dominated by crack willow. Natural England's citation for the site states that it is 'exceptionally rich' in species of butterflies and moths, including several locally uncommon species. In the south of the site there are two wet grazed meadows and more woodland.The entrance to the site is at the northern end of the local recreation ground, which is off Leicester Road.

Enderby is a village and civil parish in Leicestershire, England, on the southwest outskirts of the city of Leicester. The parish includes the neighbourhood of St John's, which is east of the village separated from it by the M1 motorway. The 2011 Census recorded the parish's population as 6,314.The village's name means 'farm/settlement of Eindrithi'.The village is situated on the B4114 between Fosse Shopping Park and Narborough. The parish includes Fosse Shopping Park, Grove Park Commercial Centre and Everards Brewery. The parish is bounded by the City of Leicester and the civil parishes of Braunstone Town, Glen Parva, Lubbesthorpe, Narborough and Whetstone. The course of the Fosse Way Roman road passes through the parish. Near St John's is the deserted village of Aldeby by the River Soar.Enderby Hall was the ancestral home of the Smith family when the paternal line ended. The hall was left to Charles Loraine who took the name Charles Loraine Smith.

The River Sence is a Leicestershire (England) tributary of the larger River Soar. The River Sence can be traced eastwards up to the village of Billesdon, and then flows south west through Great Glen, Leicestershire, and then west (south of Wigston and South Wigston) until the confluence with the River Soar just to the west of Blaby. Tracing the River Sence upstream, the Environment Agency does monitor the river between Blaby and Great Glen, but there has been no significant flooding in recent years, and the land along the River Sence is largely agricultural. In 1881 Sebastian Evans wrote that the usual names for this river were Billesdon Brook and Burton Brook.The river flows past South Wigston at a point known locally as Crow Mills. After heavy rain the river level here rises quickly. It floods neighbouring fields and then flows across the road causing the road to become impassable to traffic. After prolonged rain the river floods large areas of farm land along its course. At village of Blaby it floods across the cricket pitch and also it can flood across the Leicester Road under the Leicester to Birmingham railway bridge. This can cause significant disruption to local traffic. Over recent years the maintenance on the river appears to have been reduced. It can often be seen choked with weeds and other vegetation.

Cosby is a village in the English county of Leicestershire. Cosby is located in the south of the county near the larger villages and towns of Whetstone, Blaby , Wigston and Oadby. Its proximity to the city of Leicester means it is part of the Leicester Urban Area. The village is administered by Blaby District Council. Cosby has a brook which runs through the village and eventually serves as a tributary to the River Soar, then runs into the river Humber and then into the North Sea. Even though The Wash is 59 miles away there is no source of the river in Cosby. London is 80 miles away, and the closest airports are East Midlands Airport (EMA) and Birmingham Airport (BHX) The village's name probably means 'farm/settlement of Cossa'. 'Farm/settlement of Kofsi' has also been suggested.
