The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) is a U.S. national laboratory under the Department of Energy Office of Fossil Energy. NETL focuses on applied research for the clean production and use of domestic energy resources. It performs research and development on the supply, efficiency, and environmental constraints of producing and using fossil energy resources while maintaining affordability. NETL has sites in Albany, Oregon; Morgantown, West Virginia; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Together, these sites have 117 buildings and 242 acres of land. More than 1,400 employees work at NETL's three sites including federal employees and contractors. NETL funds and manages contracted research in the United States and more than 40 foreign countries through arrangements with private organizations and other government agencies. This work is augmented by onsite applied research in computational and basic sciences, energy system dynamics, geological and environmental systems, and materials science.

Experimental Mine, U.S. Bureau of Mines is a landmark located in the Pittsburgh suburb of Bruceton, Pennsylvania. In 1910, the newly created U.S. Bureau of Mines leased a 38-acre tract of land from the Pittsburgh Coal Company and opened the Experimental Mine. One of the early findings in the Experimental Mine demonstrated that coal dust by itself was capable of propagating an explosion even in the absence of any methane gas. This demonstration was contrary to the old belief widely held at the time that coal dust could not explode without gas. This view had led to the very dangerous and widespread practice of using loose coal dust in mines to pack explosives in boreholes, which had cost many thousands of lives. These early experiments clearly proved that such a practice was too hazardous to continue.

Bruceton is an unincorporated suburb of Pittsburgh within Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the Greater Pittsburgh metropolitan region. Its western half is part of South Park Township and its eastern half is part of Jefferson Hills. Bruceton is the home of the Experimental Mine of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, which originally opened in 1910. It is also the home of the Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center. The Pittsburgh and West Virginia Railway connected to the B&O Railroad in Bruceton. It is 185 miles (or 298 km) northwest of Washington D.C.

Lick Run is a 6.7-mile-long (10.8 km) urban stream in southern Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, a tributary of Peters Creek. The former Lick Run coal mine of the Pittsburgh Coal Company had its mouth near the stream, along the B&O Railroad line.Several stone arch bridges cross the stream. One carries Brownsville Road over the stream near Broughton. A National Landmark stone arch bridge carries Cochran Mill Road over the stream further downstream.

South Park School District is a small, suburban, public school district located in southern Allegheny County. It serves the residents of South Park Township, a suburb of Pittsburgh. South Park School District encompasses approximately 9 square miles (23 km2) square miles. Per 2010 local census data, it serves a resident population of 13,416, a decrease of 924 from 2001. In 2009 the districts residents' per capita income was $21,538, while the median family income was $57,290.

Allegheny County Fairgrounds located in South Park in South Park Township, Pennsylvania, was acquired and designed for use in 1927 by the Allegheny County Department of Parks. Beginning in 1932, this was the location of the Allegheny County Fair. It was added to the List of Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmarks in 2009.

Thomas Jefferson High School is an American public secondary school located in Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania. It is a part of the West Jefferson Hills School District which includes West Elizabeth, Jefferson Hills, and Pleasant Hills. These communities have a combined population of 15,000.

South Park Township is a township in the southern part of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States, near Pittsburgh. The population was 13,416 at the 2010 census.A large portion of the township consists of a county park of the same name.

Bear's Retreat is a small Pennsylvania landmark, primarily known for its age. It is a privately owned house dating back to c. 1794, being lived in as of 2011. The southern log side was built by Jacob Bare in 1794. It is believed he was a German immigrant based on the three-story construction of the log section. Despite plenty of room to build his home, large, heavy, hand-hewn logs were raised higher and higher into place in the traditional building custom of his homeland. The Northern "new addition" brick side built in 1840. The red-brick exterior was made on-site using the abundant clay found on the property. Remains of the outdoor summer kitchen are still clearly present. The property was designated a Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmark in 1983. Bear's Retreat is at 253 Inglefield Drive, Pleasant Hills, Pennsylvania.

Jefferson Hills is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. In the 2020 census, the population was 12,424. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Part of the West Jefferson Hills School District, Jefferson Hills was created as Jefferson Township. Incorporated on January 22, 1828, it was named after Thomas Jefferson. Before 1998, the borough was known as simply Jefferson.

Library is an unincorporated community in South Park Township, Pennsylvania along Brownsville Road. Originally known as Loafer's Hollow, it was renamed Library by its residents in honor of the first library in the area, founded by John Moore in 1833. South of Library, the original course of Brownsville Road continues as Pennsylvania Route 88. Library holds an annual Memorial Day parade and ceremony.
