Spring Hill Historic District (Mansfield, Connecticut)

Mansfield is a town in Tolland County, Connecticut, United States. The town is part of the Capitol Planning Region. The population was 25,892 at the 2020 census.Pequot and Mohegan people lived in this region for centuries before the arrival of English settler-immigrants in the late 17th century. By 1692, English settlers put down roots in the area that is now Mansfield Center.Mansfield was incorporated in October 1702, separating from the Town of Windham, in Hartford County. The community was named after Major Moses Mansfield, a part-owner of the town site. When Windham County was formed on 12 May 1726, Mansfield then became part of that county. A century later, at a town meeting on 3 April 1826, selectmen voted to ask the General Assembly to annex Mansfield to Tolland County. That occurred the following year. The town of Mansfield contains the community of Storrs, which is home to the main campus of the University of Connecticut and the associated Connecticut Repertory Theatre. Villages within the town include Gurleyville and Mansfield Center, Mansfield Hollow, and Atwoodville.

Fifty Foot Cliff is a glacially carved gneiss cliff in Storrs, Mansfield, Connecticut, with views of Eastern Connecticut. It is, in reality, just over one hundred feet tall, named more for alliterative reasons than anything else. At the top of the ledge is a granite bench in memory of filmmaker Ishmael Rosas.Fifty Foot Cliff is accessed by a trail starting at the Mansfield Historical Society and is part of the Nipmuck Trail. It meets up with several other trails at a cleared space known as "The Junction." Some highlights of the trail include stone walls, cairns, glacial erratics, and a large tree; called the wolf tree, with a rope swing. The Cliff is part of the town-owned Fifty-Foot Cliff Preserve, 102 acres of mostly forested land with a 1.4 mile trail. According to legend, when the cliff was devoid of trees in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, calls from the top of the bluff would carry all the way to nearby Coney Rock.

The Molesworth Institute is a fictional organization started in 1956 with the aim of promoting library humour. It is a combination of real librarians and fictitious people, mostly literary characters. The founder and longtime director, Norman D. Stevens, has published a great many humorous articles about Library science under his title from the organization, and the institute has been mentioned in major publications in this field of study.

E. O. Smith High School, (or E.O. Smith) named after a member of Connecticut's legislature and former University of Connecticut president Edwin O. Smith, is a secondary school located in Storrs, Connecticut, United States. E.O. Smith was established by the University of Connecticut in 1958 as the first high school in the area.

The Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry (BIMP) is a public museum of puppetry operated by the University of Connecticut and located in Storrs, Connecticut.

Connecticut Repertory Theatre (CRT) at the Storrs campus of the University of Connecticut is a professional theatre run by the Department of Dramatic Arts, a part of the School of Fine Arts. Its current artistic director is Megan Monaghan Rivas; past artistic directors included Michael Bradford and Vincent J. Cardinal. Although a part of a university, the CRT is a major presence in the theatre world and sells more than twelve thousand tickets each year. CRT offers a subscription series of six plays and musicals each year—two in the 116-seat Studio Theatre, two in the 240-seat Nafe Katter Theatre, and two in the 485-seat Harriet S. Jorgensen Theatre. Productions range from dramas such as The Children's Hour by Lillian Hellman to more light-hearted fare such as The Odd Couple by Neil Simon. Prominent theatre personalities who have appeared in CRT productions include actors Kim Hunter, Judy Kaye, and Aleta Mitchell, directors James Warwick and Larry Carpenter, choreographer Tony Stevens, and designer Dennis Parichy.CRT and the Department of Dramatic Arts also run the puppet arts program founded by Frank Ballard.

The Gurleyville Historic District encompasses a formerly industrial rural crossroads village in Mansfield, Connecticut. Centered on Gurleyville and Chaffeeville Roads, it includes a collection of mainly vernacular 19th-century residences, a stone gristmill dating to about 1749, and the archaeological remains of later industrial endeavours. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

The Nipmuck Trail is a Blue-Blazed hiking trail system which meanders through 34.5 miles (55.5 km) of forests in northeast Connecticut. It is maintained by the Connecticut Forest and Park Association and is considered one of the Blue-Blazed hiking trails. There are two southern trail heads (two tines of a fork) in the south of the town of Mansfield, Connecticut. The southwestern terminus is at a road shoulder parking place on Puddin Lane, and the southeastern terminus is a DEEP parking lot on North Windham Road at the southeast corner of Mansfield Hollow State Park. The northern terminus is at the north end of Breakneck Pond along the Massachusetts border in Nipmuck State Forest. Camping permits may be obtained for up to five separate locations for backpacking. For 9 miles (14 km) the Nipmuck Trail travels through the Yale-Myers Forest which is owned by Yale University. The trail also traverses 3.5 miles (5.6 km) of the University of Connecticut's East Campus (the protected Moss tract through the Fenton Forest). For about 6 miles, the trail follows the Fenton River from the University of Connecticut to Mansfield Hollow State Park.

The Dodd Center for Human Rights (formerly the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center) is a University of Connecticut center which supports programming, educational initiatives, and events dedicated to the theme of human rights. The Dodd Center also houses several University of Connecticut departments and centers, including Archives & Special Collections, a unit of the University of Connecticut Library, the Human Rights Institute, and the Center for Judaic Studies and Contemporary Jewish Life. The John P. McDonald Reading Room is the public access point for the university archives and special collections.

Elliot Ballpark is a baseball stadium on the campus of the University of Connecticut (UConn) in Storrs, Connecticut, United States. It is the home field of the UConn Huskies baseball team of NCAA Division I's Big East Conference. The stadium is designed to seat 1,500 people, with additional space on grass berms which can also accommodate temporary bleachers. It is named after former UConn baseball player Doug Elliot and his family, who provided a major gift towards the construction of the venue.Elliot Ballpark replaced J. O. Christian Field as UConn's home field. The stadium was set to open during the 2020 season, however, UConn played no home games prior to the cancellation of the season due to the coronavirus pandemic. The first game at the ballpark was played on March 23, 2021, with UConn defeating Central Connecticut State by a score of 2-0.

Storrs is a village and census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Mansfield in eastern Tolland County, Connecticut, United States. The village is part of the Capitol Planning Region. The population was 15,979 at the 2020 census. It is dominated economically and demographically by the main campus of the University of Connecticut and the associated Connecticut Repertory Theatre.

Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum is a 2,000-seat hockey rink in Storrs, Connecticut. It is the former home arena and current practice facility for the University of Connecticut women's and men's college ice hockey teams. It opened on November 7, 1998, replacing the outdoor UConn Ice Arena, which was in use since the 1960s. The Forum was constructed as part of the UCONN 2000 commitment by the State of Connecticut to help rebuild, renew, and enhance the campuses of the University of Connecticut. It was opened in time for the hockey team's elevation to Division I status. The arena was used for the 2000 MAAC Championship (won by UConn), the 2001 MAAC tournament, and the 2002 ECAC women's hockey tournament. It hosted the 2008 Hockey East Women's Tournament. The building was named for Mark E. Freitas '81, a former hockey letter winner and benefactor, on February 5, 2005. The men's hockey team used the venue for home games until 2014 when they joined the Hockey East conference. Upon joining the conference, the team played in the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut. For the duration of the 2020–21 season, the men's team reverted to using the Forum due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The women's hockey team played in the Forum until 2022. In 2023, the team moved to the 2,600-seat on-campus Toscano Family Ice Forum that also now hosts the men's team. UConn continues to use the Forum as a practice facility for the varsity teams and the home ice of its club hockey teams.
