The Battle of Manila (Filipino: Labanan sa Maynila; Spanish: Batalla de Manila), sometimes called the Mock Battle of Manila, was a land engagement which took place in Manila on August 13, 1898, at the end of the Spanish–American War, four months after the decisive victory by Commodore Dewey's Asiatic Squadron at the Battle of Manila Bay. The belligerents were Spanish forces led by Governor-General of the Philippines Fermín Jáudenes, and American forces led by United States Army Major General Wesley Merritt and United States Navy Commodore George Dewey. American forces were supported by units of the Philippine Revolutionary Army, led by Emilio Aguinaldo. The battle that took place in Manila during the Philippine-Spanish War is commonly referred to as the "Mock battle of Manila". This unique and covert operation was meticulously planned by the local commanders of the Spanish and American forces, who were legally at war with each other. Their clandestine collaboration aimed to orchestrate a simulated battle that would facilitate the transfer of control over the city center from the Spanish to the Americans, all while ensuring that the Philippine Revolutionary Army would be kept at bay. The underlying motivations for this meticulously coordinated sham battle were multi-faceted, encompassing both racist and political elements. Spain, being a predominantly white nation, sought to avoid perceived humiliation on the international stage by losing to the predominantly nonwhite indigenous Austronesians, Negritos, Malay Filipinos, and mestizos of Hispanic and Chinese descent who comprised the Filipino forces. By preventing the Filipino forces from achieving victory at this crucial juncture, Spain hoped to maintain its image and reputation. Consequently, the outcome of this strategic maneuver left the American forces in control of Intramuros, the heart of Manila, while being encircled by Philippine revolutionary forces. As a result of the battle, American forces gained control of Intramuros, the center of Manila, while being surrounded by Philippine revolutionary forces. This event set the stage for the Battle of Manila in 1899 and marked the beginning of the Philippine–American War.

Manuel A. Roxas High School is a public high school in Paco, Manila, Philippines. It is one of the six schools in Manila to provide the Special Science course for selected students. The first building of Roxas High School was situated in Quezon Boulevard near Feati University. It was established in 1948 and is the first high school to be named after a former president, Manuel Acuna Roxas. [3]

Plaza Dilao is a public square in Paco, Manila, bounded by Quirino Avenue to the east, and the rest of the plaza surrounded by the Plaza Dilao Road and Quirino Avenue Extension. The former site of a Spanish colonial era Japanese settlement, it prominently features a memorial commemorating Japanese Roman Catholic kirishitan daimyō Dom Justo Takayama, who settled there in 1615. It is one of two open public spaces in Paco, the other being Paco Park. Currently, Plaza Dilao is one of five freedom parks in the City of Manila, where protests and rallies may be held without requiring permission from local authorities.

The College of the Immaculate Conception of Concordia (Spanish: Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion de la Concordia) commonly known as Concordia College Manila is a private Catholic basic and higher education institution run by Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul in Paco, Manila, in the Philippines. The college was founded in 1868. The institution is affiliated with DC-SLMES (St. Louise de Marillac Educational System).

Metropolitan Manila (Filipino: Kalakhang Maynila), formally the National Capital Region (NCR; Filipino: Pambansang Punong Rehiyon) and commonly called Metro Manila, is the capital region and largest metropolitan area of the Philippines. The region is the center of culture (including arts and entertainment), economy, education and government of the Philippines. Designated as a global power city, the region exerts a significant impact on commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, both locally and internationally. It is the home to all embassies in the Philippines, thereby making it an important center for international diplomacy in the country. Its economic power makes the region the country's premier center for finance and commerce. The region accounts for 36% of the gross domestic product (GDP) of the Philippines. Greater Manila is ASEAN fourth largest economy after Singapore, Jakarta and Bangkok. The metropolis was established in 1975 through Presidential Decree No. 824 in response to the needs to sustain the growing population and for the creation for the center of political power and the seat of the government of the Philippines. The Province of Manila, the predecessor entity of the region, is one of the first eight provinces that revolted against the Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines at the end of the 19th century. Manila's role in the Revolution is honoured in the flag of the Philippines, where the sun's eight rays symbolise the eight revolutionary provinces.

Paco station is a railway station located on the South Main Line in the city of Manila, Philippines. It was originally opened by the Manila Railroad Company in 1908 as a major hub in the southern half of Manila, where trains toward Cavite province once operated. The old train station building was designed by William E. Parsons and was completed in 1915. Prior to the electrification plan in the late 1970s, Paco was the southernmost double-track station on the line. The station eventually lost its significance in the following decades and only the façade remains intact with the interior in a state of decay after a 1996 demolition plan to give way for the construction of a shopping mall. A newer utilitarian platform area has been built for the PNR Metro Commuter Line behind the old station in 2009. Preservation efforts have been stated since 2015 with the construction of the North–South Commuter Railway.

The Jose P. Laurel Ancestral House (Filipino: Tahanan ni Jose P. Laurel) is a historic house in Manila, Philippines. It is one of the three houses owned by the President of the Second Philippine Republic, José P. Laurel. It is located in 1515 Peñafrancia Street (corner Santo Sepulcro Street) in Paco District (hence also known as Villa Peñafrancia). President Laurel purchased the house in 1926 and served as his residence, together with his wife Pacencia Hidalgo and their children, for 29 years before he transferred to his retirement home in Mandaluyong.

The Otis Bridge is a six-lane girder bridge crossing the Estero de Concordia, a tributary of the Pasig River, in Manila, the Philippines. Built in 1968 and carrying Paz Mendoza Guazon Street, formerly known as Otis Street (named after the American Governor-General Elwell Stephen Otis), the bridge is a major artery for commercial vehicles carrying cargo from the Port of Manila, with some 10,000 trucks crossing the bridge daily.In 2015, the bridge was slated for replacement or reconstruction as it neared the end of its 50-year service life, with ₱37,000,000 initially being allocated for construction work by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). However, on June 26, 2018, the bridge was ordered closed by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on the advice of the Manila Disaster risk reduction Management Council, after media reports showed that 20-foot (6.1 m) long cracks started appearing along the center island, caused by the number of overloaded trucks that used the bridge, as well as construction work on the nearby Concordia Bridge which prevented its timely replacement.The bridge was reopened on December 4, 2018, three months ahead of the March 2019 target date, with ₱217,000,000 being allocated from the national budget for its replacement. Construction took place 24/7 in phases until the project was completed.

The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) (Filipino: Komisyon sa mga Pilipino sa Ibayong Dagat) is an agency of the government of the Philippines under the Office of the President of the Philippines. CFO was established on June 16, 1980, through the enactment of Batas Pambansa Blg. 79. The agency is responsible for promoting and upholding the interest of Filipino emigrants and Filipino permanent residents in other countries. It is also responsible for preserving and strengthening ties with Filipino communities outside the Philippines. It is headed by a Chairperson who is bestowed with a Cabinet rank of Secretary.

Paco Catholic School is a co-institutional private school. The school is located in the district of Paco in the City of Manila, Philippines. Paco Catholic school started in 1912 as an informal class for a handful of young boys inside the chapel in the Peñafrancia section of the district by Raymond Esquenet. It is the largest parochial school in the Philippines and now serving approximately 5,000 students.It actively participates, and sometimes host, many inter-school competitions. Students from the grade school department were the grand champion in the Junior Pinoy Henyo.

Ayala Bridge (Filipino: Tulay ng Ayala; Spanish: Puente de Ayala) is a steel truss bridge over the Pasig River in Manila, Philippines. It connects the districts of Ermita and San Miguel, passing over the western tip of Isla de Convalecencia. It carries Circumferential Road 1 (C-1) and National Route 180 (N180), linking Ayala Boulevard in Ermita to P. Casal Street in San Miguel.

The Malayan High School of Science (MHSS) is a private secondary educational institution established in 2005. It is managed and operated by the Mapúa University (MU). It is on a one-hectare property along P. Guazon Street (formerly Otis St.) in the district of Pandacan, Manila, Philippines.
