Butterley

The Butterley Company was an English manufacturing firm founded as Benjamin Outram and Company in 1790. Its subsidiaries existed until 2009.

Butterley Reservoir is a reservoir in Derbyshire, England. The reservoir was built to provide water for the Cromford Canal which opened for use in 1794. The Codnor Park and Butterley Park reservoirs also provided water to the Cromford Canal. The line of the Cromford Canal passes beneath the reservoir along the Butterley Tunnel. When the canal tunnel was in use, water was provided to the canal directly from the reservoir via an adit which connects to the Butterley tunnel.The reservoir is crossed by a causeway on the Midland Railway - Butterley's line between Butterley railway station and Hammersmith railway station, the latter being a new creation. A variety of waterfowl can be seen on the reservoir, and fishing is allowed with a permit.

Indietracks was an annual indie pop music festival at the Midland Railway in Butterley, Derbyshire, England. The main site was located at Swanwick Junction. Bands played in variety of locations, including a restored church, in a train shed, and on the moving trains themselves. The event was staffed by volunteers, with the proceeds from the festival going towards the upkeep and renovation of the site and trains.The first indiepop event held at the centre was in April 2007, organised by steam train restorer Stuart Mackay. Indietracks was established as a two-day festival in summer that year.Reviewing the 2011 festival, Malcolm Jack of The Guardian described the artists as "so obscure you have to wonder if they've even heard of themselves". He writes, "Indietracks does little to dispel the notion of indie-pop fans being given to whimsy. It's the annual gathering of the twee tribe – think lovers of a broad church of outsider sounds from C86-inspired three-chord shambling to riot grrrl and anti-folk."The festival inspired compilation albums, released annually. In November 2021, the festival organisers announced that 2019's event would be the last Indietracks, citing the pandemic as a primary reason for the festival not continuing.

The Midland Railway – Butterley is a heritage railway and museum complex at Butterley, near Ripley in Derbyshire.

Hammersmith railway station is a heritage railway station on the Midland Railway – Butterley in Derbyshire. There was no station at this point originally, being situated on the Ambergate–Pye Bridge line. However, when the line was reopened, the A38 road prevented any further westward extension. Hammersmith is used as terminus with a run-around loop. Trains normally proceed from here eastwards without stopping at Butterley railway station which they left a few minutes previously. The location of the terminus allows passengers to cross the causeway over Butterley Reservoir. There is no vehicular access at this point although a public footpath runs across the end of the platform; passengers are instead advised to use Butterley railway station. The signal box at Hammersmith was originally at Kilby Bridge in Leicestershire. Built in 1900, it was closed by British Rail on 29 June 1986 and moved to the Centre in August 1986. It was re-erected at Hammersmith in 1987 and commissioned in September 1989. It is a standard Midland Railway type 3B box.

Butterley Hall is an 18th-century country house near Ripley, Derbyshire. It is a Grade II listed building. The site is now the headquarters of the Derbyshire Constabulary. The manor of Butterley was owned by Darley Abbey until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century. The two-storey, attic gabled eight-bayed house was built in the late 18th century for the Home family but was sold in 1790 to Francis Beresford for occupation by Benjamin Outram, founder of the Butterley Company. The Hall was the 1803 birthplace of General Sir James Outram of the Indian Army. Following Benjamin Outram's death in 1805 his business partner William Jessop took residence. His grandson, also William Jessop of Butterley Hall, was High Sheriff of Derbyshire in 1878. From 1892 to 1938 the hall was occupied by Albert Leslie Wright (1862-1938), Chairman and Managing Director of the Butterley Company, and his family. Like Jessop, Leslie Wright held the office of High Sheriff of Derbyshire in 1919. His son, Fitzwalter (1902-1957), and grandson John would continue to run Butterley until 1968.The house later became the head office of the Butterley Company before it was acquired by Derbyshire Police.

Ripley railway station was a railway station which served the town of Ripley in Derbyshire, England. It was opened in 1856 by the Midland Railway on its Ripley branch from Little Eaton Junction, approximately 3 miles north of Derby. In 1890 it became the terminus of a line from Heanor Junction on the Erewash Valley Line near Langley Mill. Approximately two and a half miles from Denby the line crossed the main Ripley Road at Marehay and reached the original station immediately to the south of Peasehill Road, around 1 km south of the town centre. In 1889 a new line was built from Langley Mill through Heanor and Crosshill. A new station was built nearer to the town centre since it was planned to extend the line to meet the Ambergate to Pye Bridge Line at Butterley. The original station became known as the Old Yard and provided goods facilities.The new station, to the south of Nottingham Road and in a deep cutting, was double tracked with two platforms provided with matching single storey buildings. In the Grouping of all lines (into four main companies) in 1923 the station became part of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway . The station closed to passengers in 1930, though it continued with a very lively goods trade for the town's shops and businesses. There were also regular excursions, for instance to the FA Cup Final organised by the Miners Welfare, and the annual week at the holiday camp at Skegness, taken by over a thousand miners and their families. On 12 October 1961 the station featured on the ITV programme Lunchbox. Midland Railway Number 1000 brought 500 spectators from Derby. The line north of Ripley to Butterley had closed on 23 January 1938. That going north from Marehay Junction closed in 1954 along with the Old Yard. The station finally closed to goods on 1 April 1963. The station buildings were finally demolished around 1985 and part of the site was occupied by a builders merchant's warehouse.

Ripley Town Hall is a municipal building in the Market Place, Ripley, Derbyshire, England. The town hall is the headquarters of Amber Valley Borough Council.

Ripley is a market and industrial town as well as a civil parish in the Amber Valley district of the ceremonial county of Derbyshire, England. It is located to the north-northeast of Derby, northwest of Heanor, southwest of Alfreton and northeast of Belper. The town forms a continuous urban area with Heanor, Eastwood and Ilkeston as part of the wider Nottingham Urban Area.

Amber Sound FM is a Community Radio station based in the Amber Valley, Derbyshire, England. It was awarded a five-year community licence by OFCOM in 2008 after several Restricted Service Licence broadcasts. Amber Sound said it would "encourage local people, young and old, to become part of the station".
