The Welsh Marches (Welsh: Y Mers) is an imprecisely defined area along the border between England and Wales in the United Kingdom. The precise meaning of the term has varied at different periods. The English term Welsh March (in Medieval Latin Marchia Walliae) was originally used in the Middle Ages to denote the marches between England and the Principality of Wales, in which Marcher lords had specific rights, exercised to some extent independently of the king of England. In modern usage, "the Marches" is often used to describe those English counties which lie along the border with Wales, particularly Shropshire and Herefordshire, and sometimes adjoining areas of Wales. However, at one time the Marches included all of the historic counties of Cheshire, Shropshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire.

Michaelchurch Escley is a village and civil parish 13 miles (21 km) west of Hereford, in the county of Herefordshire, England. In 2011 the parish had a population of 198. The parish touches Craswall, Cusop, Dorstone, Llanveynoe, Longtown, Newton, Peterchurch and St. Margarets. Michaelchurch Escley shares a parish council with Newton, St Margarets, Turnastone and Vowchurch called "Vowchurch and District Group Parish Council".

Ewyas Lacy was an ancient hundred in south-west Herefordshire. It was part of the ancient Welsh region of Ewyas claimed by the de Lacy family following the Norman Conquest. It equated to the modern civil parishes of Craswall, Cusop, Llancillo, Llanveynoe, Longtown (with Clodock), Michaelchurch Escley, Newton, Rowlestone, St Margarets, and Walterstone.Ewyas Lacy ceased to be used as an administrative entity with the passing of the Local Government Act 1888. The final residual copyholds were converted to freeholds in the Law of Property Act 1922.

Longtown Castle, also termed Ewias Lacey Castle in early accounts, is a ruined Norman motte-and-bailey fortification in Longtown, Herefordshire. It was established in the 11th century by Walter de Lacy, reusing former Roman earthworks. The castle was then rebuilt in stone by Gilbert de Lacy after 1148, who also established the adjacent town to help pay for the work. By the 14th century, Longtown Castle had fallen into decline. Despite being pressed back into use during the Owain Glyndŵr rising in 1403, it fell into ruin. In the 21st century the castle is maintained by English Heritage and operated as a tourist attraction.

Craswall (historically also spelt Craswell, Crasswall and Crosswold) is a village and civil parish in Herefordshire, England. It lies in the far west of the county, in the foothills of the Black Mountains, close to the border with Wales. Before 1536 Craswall was in the marcher lordship of Ewyas. Until 1866 it was a chapelry in the large parish of Clodock (until 1852 in the diocese of St David's). It then became a separate civil parish.The village is near the source of the River Monnow. Above the village is the Black Hill, the setting for Bruce Chatwin's novel On the Black Hill. In the 2001 census the population of the civil parish was 147, increasing to 153 at the 2011 Census.

Longtown is a linear village and parish in Herefordshire, England. The parish includes the village of Clodock and had a population in mid-2010 of 543, increasing to 620 at the 2011 Census.

Clodock Welsh: Clydog is a village in the west of Herefordshire, England. It lies on the River Monnow in the foothills of the Black Mountains, close to the border with Wales. The village is in the civil parish of Longtown. Before 1536 Clodock was in the marcher lordship of Ewyas Lacy. Until 1866 it was a large parish (until 1852 in the diocese of St David's), which included the chapelries of Craswall, Llanveynoe, Longtown and Newton. In 1866 each chapelry became a separate civil parish, and the village of Clodock became part of the civil parish of Longtown.The parish church is dedicated to St Clydog, king of Ewyas, who was killed during the 6th century. The present church dates from the 12th century, and is a Grade 1 Listed Building. It is completely un-Victorianised, with west gallery, box-pews, three-decker pulpit and seventeenth century sanctuary furniture.

The Black Hill (also known as Crib y Garth) is a hill (elevation 2100 feet or 640m) in the Black Mountains in Herefordshire, England at grid reference SO275348. It rises just west of the village of Craswall, near the border with Wales. The southern part of the ridge leading to the summit is a rocky knife-edge giving excellent views to either side. The northern part crosses a peat bog on gently sloping land at the edge of the east facing escarpment. The lower part is very similar to the main ridge of the Skirrid mountain near Abergavenny, owing to their similar underlying geology. The Black Hill is known locally as the 'Cat's Back,' as viewed from Herefordshire it looks like a crouching cat about to pounce.

The Hatterrall Ridge (sometimes spelled Hatterall) is a ridge in the Black Mountains forming the border between Powys and Monmouthshire in Wales and Herefordshire in England. The ridge is about 10 miles (16 km) long, and is followed by the Offa's Dyke Path. On the west side of the ridge is the Vale of Ewyas, and on the east side is the Olchon Valley and Black Hill. The western side of the ridge falls within the Brecon Beacons National Park. Much of the northern part of the ridge is a broad whaleback, but it narrows down considerably further south, and especially near to Llanthony Priory in the Vale of Ewyas to the west of the mountain. There is a large and prominent landslip on the eastern side of the mountain here, known as Black Darren, where a large slice of the rocks has fallen away from the main mass of the hill. The ridge to the southwest ends abruptly at the sheer cliff known as the Darren below which is a considerable landslide area extending south to the hamlet of Cwmyoy with its misshapen church.

Newton is a village and civil parish 11 miles (18 km) south west of Hereford, in the county of Herefordshire, England. In 2011 the parish had a population of 139. The parish touches Dulas, Longtown, Michaelchurch Escley and St. Margarets. Newton shares a parish council with Michaelchurch Escley, St Margarets, Turnastone and Vowchurch called "Vowchurch and District Group Parish Council".

Urishay constitutes the remains of a castle, 16th century chapel and 17th century house located about 2.5 km west of Peterchurch in Herefordshire, England.

Urishay Castle Chapel is a redundant chapel to the north of Urishay Castle, some 2.5 kilometres (2 mi) west of the village of Peterchurch in Herefordshire, England (grid reference SO326376). It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building, and is under the care of the Friends of Friendless Churches. The chapel is a Scheduled Monument, and is on the Heritage at Risk Register.
