The First Unitarian Church of San Jose is located at 160 North Third Street in downtown San Jose, California, across from St. James Park, and was designed in "Richardsonian Romanesque" style by architect George Page, who also designed the Hayes Mansion. Local historian Linda Larson Boston called the building, “One of a handful of American churches patterned after Unitarian churches of Transylvania, it features a large triple-arched stained glass window on the facade, multiple domes and cupolas, and both round and square towers,” in her pamphlet, Highlights of San Jose, California’s St. James Park and Environs. The congregation purchased the site in 1888, and the cornerstone was laid in a ceremony on September 23, 1891. The building is registered on both the list of National Register of Historic Places and the list of California Historical Landmarks.The church is a member of The Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations (UUA) and "People Acting in Community Together".

The First Presbyterian Church of San Jose was a Presbyterian church in San Jose, California, United States. Founded in 1849, it was one of the oldest Protestant churches in California. The First Presbyterian building is located on 49 N. 4th Street in Downtown San Jose across from San Jose City Hall. The neighborhood is home to several other churches, including the Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, the First Unitarian Church of San Jose, Our Lady of La Vang Parish, and the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph.

St. James Park is a 6.8-acre (2.8 ha) park in downtown San Jose, California. Originally laid out as St. James Square in 1848, local newspapers dubbed the site a park in 1885, shortly after a fountain was installed in the center of the area. In 1933, two men who were accused of kidnapping and murdering Brooke Hart were lynched in St. James Park. Since then, a road and light rail tracks have been added, bisecting the park; it is now a popular gathering spot for the homeless population of San Jose.

The Arts Council Silicon Valley (1982–2013) was the official Santa Clara County, United States arts council. Established in 1982 originally as the Cultural Council and later as Arts Council of Santa Clara County, Arts Council Silicon Valley (ACSV) was a private, nonprofit arts organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for Santa Clara County residents by creating and fostering arts and culture throughout the region. As a grant agency, the ACSV provided funding and fundraising support services to more than 140 local arts organizations and individual artists. It also provided advocacy, marketing, and support services to more than 600 local arts organizations and strove to help make the arts accessible to local youth. As the official state and local partner with the California Arts Council and the County of Santa Clara, the ACSV was in 2010 the largest private nonprofit arts council in the state. During its 31 year history, the ACSV had distributed nearly $24 million in grants and services to the arts in Santa Clara County. Arts Council Silicon Valley and 1stACT Silicon Valley merged in 2013 to create the regional nonprofit SVCREATES. SVCREATES builds on Arts Council’s 30-year history of support to the arts community.

Trinity Episcopal Cathedral is an Episcopal cathedral in San Jose, California. It is the seat of the Episcopal Diocese of El Camino Real.

Saint James is a light rail station operated by Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority. The station is located in Downtown San Jose, California on 1st and 2nd Streets between Saint James and Saint John Streets. The northbound platform is on 1st Street (the address is 150 N. First Street); the southbound platform is on 2nd Street (the address is 101 N. Second Street). This station is served by the Blue and Green lines of the VTA Light Rail system. The platforms at Saint James station are separated by the western half of the historic St. James Park. Saint James station was renovated in 2006 to permit level entry at all doors.

The Moir Building, was formerly the Straford Hotel, and then in the 1930s named the St. James Hotel. It is a historic building located in downtown San Jose, California, next to the St. James Park. It was built in 1893–1894 and designed by W.D. Van Siclen. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 29, 1982. It is one of the last remaining examples of late 19th-century Queen Anne and Romanesque Revival architecture in San Jose.

The Roma Bakery is a historic bakery located in San Jose, California. The bakery, erected in 1911, was built by Vittorio Pera, an accomplished craftsman who developed his skills in Italy. The Roma Bakery holds historical significance due to its architectural style, which is a blend of Colonial Revival and Queen Anne style elements. The bakery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 21, 1982. After serving as a bakery for 114 years, the bakery closed its doors.

San José City Hall is the seat of the municipal government of San Jose, California. Located in Downtown San Jose, it was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Richard Meier in a Postmodern style. It consists of an 18-story tower, an iconic glass rotunda, and a city council chamber wing, laid out within a two-block-long public square known as San José Civic Plaza. The tower rises 285 feet (87 m) above the plaza, making it the second tallest building in San Jose. San Jose has had six seats of government in its history. City officials met in Downtown San Jose from before the city's incorporation in 1850 until the 1950s, when a modern City Hall was built at Civic Center to the north. The current City Hall's construction capped a period of rapid growth for the city during the dot-com bubble. Its opening in 2005 marked the municipal government's return downtown after half a century in an office park setting.

Downtown San José station is a proposed underground Bay Area Rapid Transit station underneath Santa Clara Street in Downtown San Jose, planned as part of Silicon Valley BART extension Phase II. The station would be co-located with the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority's existing Santa Clara light rail station, and be located between the proposed 28th Street/Little Portugal station and a transfer station at San Jose Diridon Station. The station eventually connects to the proposed Santa Clara BART station. Revenue service is envisioned to start in 2029–2030.

27–29 Fountain Alley is a historic commercial building located in San Jose, California. The building is architecturally significant as the only representative of late Victorian-style in this area. Its historically important for its association with Fountain Alley, one of San Jose oldest streets. The Fountain Alley building at 27–29 Fountain Alley was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 2, 1982.

San Jose is the county seat of Santa Clara County and the main component of the San Jose–Sunnyvale–Santa Clara Metropolitan Statistical Area, with an estimated population of around two million residents in 2018.San Jose is notable for its innovation, cultural diversity, affluence, and sunny and mild Mediterranean climate. Its connection to the booming high tech industry phenomenon known as Silicon Valley sparked Mayor Tom McEnery to adopt the city the motto of "Capital of Silicon Valley" in 1988. Major global tech companies including Cisco Systems, eBay, Adobe Inc., PayPal, Broadcom, Samsung, Acer, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and Zoom maintain their headquarters in San Jose. San Jose is one of the wealthiest major cities in the world, with the third-highest GDP per capita (after Zürich and Oslo) and the fifth-most expensive housing market. It is home to the world's largest overseas Vietnamese population, a Hispanic community that makes up over 40% of the city's residents, and historic Japanese and Portuguese neighborhoods. Before the arrival of the Spanish, the area around San Jose was inhabited by the Tamien nation of the Ohlone peoples of California. San Jose was founded on November 29, 1777, as the Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe, the first city founded in the Californias. It then became a part of Mexico in 1821 after the Mexican War of Independence. Following the American Conquest of California during the Mexican–American War, the territory was ceded to the United States in 1848. After California achieved statehood two years later, San Jose became the state's first capital. Following World War II, San Jose experienced an economic boom, with a rapid population growth and aggressive annexation of nearby cities and communities carried out in the 1950s and 1960s. The rapid growth of the high-technology and electronics industries further accelerated the transition from an agricultural center to an urbanized metropolitan area. Results of the 1990 U.S. Census indicated that San Jose had officially surpassed San Francisco as the most populous city in Northern California. By the 1990s, San Jose had become the global center for the high tech and internet industries, making it California's fastest-growing economy.
