Barkby Thorpe

Barkby is a village and civil parish in the Charnwood district of Leicestershire, England. It is situated north-east of Leicester, and only a short way from Leicester's urban sprawl in Thurmaston and Syston. Nearby villages are Beeby and Barkby Thorpe. Barkby Brook is the main watercourse which flows through Barkby. The parish has a population of around 300. In the 1870s John Marius Wilson stated that Barkby, "lies on an affluent of the river Wreak, 1½ mile S by E of Syston r. station, and 4½ NE of Leicester; and it includes the hamlet of Hambleton."

St Mary's Church, Barkby is the Church of England Parish Church for Barkby, Leicestershire, England. The church mostly dates from the 13th century. It was Grade I listed in 1966.

Gipsy Lane Pit is a 0.5 hectares (1.2 acres) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Leicester. It is a Geological Conservation Review site.This site is important to geologists for its Triassic stratigraphy, and to mineralogists as it is rich in sulphides, some of which are unidentified and imperfectly understood compounds. Natural England describes the site's interest as "unique in Britain, and possibly internationally".The stie is private land with no public access.

Scraptoft Nature Reserve is a 14.3 hectares (35 acres) Local Nature Reserve in Scraptoft, on the eastern outskirts of Leicester. It is owned and managed by Leicester City Council.This former Second World War prisoner of war camp has habitats including a pond, semi-improved grassland and mature hawthorn scrub. Scraptoft Brook runs along the southern boundary.There is access to the site from Beeby Road.

It lies north of the A47 road east of Leicester, and runs directly into the built up area of Thurnby and Bushby to the south. For local government the village forms part of the district of Harborough, and constitutes a civil parish.
