Creake Abbey

North Creake is a village and civil parish in the north west of the English county of Norfolk. It covers an area of 14.99 km2 (5.79 sq mi) and had a population of 414 in 184 households at the 2001 census, reducing to 386 at the 2011 Census. For the purposes of local government, it falls within the district of King's Lynn and West Norfolk. The parish shares boundaries with the adjacent parishes of Burnham Market, Burnham Thorpe, Holkham, Walsingham, South Creake, Barwick and Stanhoe. The village lies 3 miles (4.8 km) south of Burnham Market and about 5 miles (8.0 km) from the north Norfolk coast. 1 mile (1.6 km) further south is the village of South Creake. The village lies on the River Burn, which flows through the centre of the village. 1 mile (1.6 km) to the north of the village along the river lies the ruined Creake Abbey. The village itself has a church, a public house and a post office. Most of the agricultural land surrounding the village, and many of the village houses, today belong to the estate of the Earl Spencer, although his family seat is many miles away in Althorp, Northamptonshire. St Mary's, the Church of England parish church, is a Grade I listed building. On 27 April 1944, a de Havilland Mosquito fighter bomber on a night training exercise crashed in the centre of the village, killing the crew of two. On the 60th anniversary of the crash in 2004, a plaque on the approximate location of the crash was unveiled by a Royal Air Force guard of honour and other dignitaries, including relatives and friends of those killed. The village was struck by an F1/T3 tornado on 23 November 1981, as part of the record-breaking nationwide tornado outbreak on that day. The derivation of the name "Creake" is apparently from the Celtic word "creic" meaning a rock. South Creake is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as "Suthcreich".

Burnham Thorpe is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It is 19 miles (31 km) north-east of King's Lynn and 31 miles (50 km) north-west of Norwich and is one of the seven Norfolk Burnhams. At the 2021 census the population of the parish was 131, a slight decrease from 144 at the 2011 census. The village is notable for being the birthplace of Admiral Horatio Nelson, victor at the Battle of Trafalgar and one of Britain's greatest heroes. At the time of his birth, Nelson's father, Edmund Nelson, was rector of the church in Burnham Thorpe.

Holkham Brick Pit is a 0.5-hectare (1.2-acre) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest west of Wells-next-the-Sea in Norfolk, England. It is a Geological Conservation Review site, and it is in the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This is the best site displaying the Hunstanton Till, a glacial deposit dating the last glacial period, between 115,000 and 11,700 years ago. This is the furthest the ice reached in East Anglia during the Last Glacial Maximum, around 26,000 years ago. The site is private land with no public access, and no geology is visible as the pit has been filled in.

Peterstone Priory a house of Augustinian Canons, was a priory in Burnham Overy, Norfolk, England. It was founded before 1200 and incorporated 1449.

South Creake is a village and civil parish in north west Norfolk, England. The village lies 1+1⁄2 miles (2.4 km) south of its twin village of North Creake, and some 5 miles (8 km) north-west of the town of Fakenham. South Creake lies on the River Burn, which flows through the centre of the village. On a hill above the village can be found the Bloodgate Hill Iron Age Fort. The civil parish has an area of 7.79 square miles (20.2 km2) and in the 2001 census had a population of 536 in 245 households, reducing to a population of 516 at the 2011 census. For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the district of King's Lynn and West Norfolk. St Mary's, the Church of England parish church, is a Grade I listed building.

The Norfolk Burnhams are a group of adjacent villages on the north coast of Norfolk, England. The villages are located near a large natural bay named Brancaster Bay and the Scolt Head Island National Nature Reserve. A medieval verse speaks of "London York and Coventry and the Seven Burnhams by the sea". The Domesday Book of 1086 also mentions some of the Burnhams (see external links). At one time there were indeed seven Burnham villages, all within a radius of two miles. These were: Burnham Deepdale Burnham Norton Burnham Overy Burnham Sutton Burnham Thorpe Burnham Ulph Burnham Westgate Hence the mnemonic for the seven Burnhams: Nelson Of Thorpe Died Well Under Sail. It is thought that Burnham Market is one of the original seven Burnhams, but this is incorrect. Burnham Market is a modern merging of three Burnhams: Burnham Sutton, Burnham Westgate and Burnham Ulph. Over the years those three central villages have merged to form the larger village and civil parish of Burnham Market, which forms the principal centre for the Burnhams and several other nearby villages. The most westerly of the villages, Burnham Deepdale, has more or less merged with the neighbouring village of Brancaster Staithe, and both are now part of the civil parish of Brancaster. Burnham Norton and Burnham Thorpe still exist as separate villages and civil parishes, much as they always have. Burnham Overy is still a single civil parish, but in modern times a distinction is often made between the two settlements of Burnham Overy Town (actually a small settlement adjacent to the parish church) and Burnham Overy Staithe (a rather larger settlement about a mile away and next to the creek-side harbour). The Burnhams are all located either on the River Burn, or adjacent to its mouth, and the name Burnham may derive from this. Burnhamthorpe Road in Toronto and Mississauga, Ontario, Canada was named after Burnham Thorpe.

Burnham Market (originally Burnham) was a railway station which served the village of Burnham Market, Norfolk, England. Opened by the West Norfolk Junction railway in 1866, it closed with the line in 1952.

The Bloodgate Hill Iron Age Fort is an Iron Age hill fort in Norfolk, England, situated on a hill above the village of South Creake in the north of the county. The meaning of the name Bloodgate is unknown, but is taken from the road that runs from the fort to the village. The circular fort has a diameter of 210 metres, making it the largest of the hill forts known in Norfolk. Much of the visible remains disappeared in 1827–8, when the ramparts were levelled during agricultural improvements. The land continued to be ploughed until 2003, when the land was acquired by the Norfolk Archaeological Trust. The site is now preserved and accessible. However little excavation has yet been undertaken.

Burnham Norton Friary was a Carmelite (White Friars) friary near Burnham Market in Norfolk, England. It is now a ruin. The friary was founded by Sir William Calthorp and Sir Ralph Hemenhale in 1241, the first Carmelite monastery to be founded following the expulsion of the order from Mount Carmel in Sinai in 1238. The theologian monk Robert Bale was prior of Burnham Norton for a time until his death in 1503. The friary was closed down in 1538, when occupied by only four poor monks, as part of the Dissolution of the Monasteries under King Henry VIII and passed undamaged into the ownership of Sir Richard Gresham. The grade I listed ruined gatehouse; the adjacent grade II* listed free-standing gable end of an unknown building remain; the almost intact precinct wall and the church still remain. The free-standing gable end’s closeness to the gatehouse suggests it was not part of the friary church.

Quarles is a hamlet and former civil parish, now in the civil parish of Holkham, in the North Norfolk district, in the county of Norfolk, England. The hamlet is 4 miles (6.4 km) south-west of Wells-next-the-Sea, 34 miles (55 km) north-west of Norwich and 122 miles (196 km) north-north-east of London. The nearest railway station is Sheringham for the Bittern Line which runs between Sheringham, Cromer and Norwich. The nearest airport is Norwich International Airport. The hamlet is just south of the Holkham Estate and consists of six houses and one farm. In 1931 the civil parish had a population of 38.

Burnham Market is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It is 19 miles (31 km) north-east of King's Lynn and 32 miles (51 km) north-west of Norwich. It is one of the Norfolk Burnhams. Three settlements, Burnham Sutton, Burnham Ulph, and Burnham Westgate merged to form Burnham Market. In 2020 it was rated among the "20 most beautiful villages in the UK and Ireland" by Condé Nast Traveler.

Burnham Overy is a civil parish on the north coast of Norfolk, England. The parish includes the settlements of Burnham Overy Town, the original village adjacent to the medieval parish church and now reduced to a handful of houses, and Burnham Overy Staithe, a larger settlement about 1⁄2 mile (0.80 km) to the north on the estuary of the River Burn. It is 1 mile (1.6 km) north-west of Burnham Market, 20 miles (32 km) north-east of King's Lynn, and 30 miles (48 km) north-west of Norwich. The A149 road runs through the parish. The civil parish has an area of 8.92 square kilometres (3.44 sq mi) and at the 2001 census had a population of 311 in 167 households, reducing to a population of 134 at the 2011 Census. For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the district of King's Lynn and West Norfolk. At the 2021 census the parish had a population of 297.
