Burnham Overy

The Norfolk Burnhams are a group of adjacent villages on the north coast of Norfolk, England. The villages are located near a large natural bay named Brancaster Bay and the Scolt Head Island National Nature Reserve. A medieval verse speaks of "London York and Coventry and the Seven Burnhams by the sea". The Domesday Book of 1086 also mentions some of the Burnhams (see external links). At one time there were indeed seven Burnham villages, all within a radius of two miles. These were: Burnham Deepdale Burnham Norton Burnham Overy Burnham Sutton Burnham Thorpe Burnham Ulph Burnham Westgate Hence the mnemonic for the seven Burnhams: Nelson Of Thorpe Died Well Under Sail. It is thought that Burnham Market is one of the original seven Burnhams, but this is incorrect. Burnham Market is a modern merging of three Burnhams: Burnham Sutton, Burnham Westgate and Burnham Ulph. Over the years those three central villages have merged to form the larger village and civil parish of Burnham Market, which forms the principal centre for the Burnhams and several other nearby villages. The most westerly of the villages, Burnham Deepdale, has more or less merged with the neighbouring village of Brancaster Staithe, and both are now part of the civil parish of Brancaster. Burnham Norton and Burnham Thorpe still exist as separate villages and civil parishes, much as they always have. Burnham Overy is still a single civil parish, but in modern times a distinction is often made between the two settlements of Burnham Overy Town (actually a small settlement adjacent to the parish church) and Burnham Overy Staithe (a rather larger settlement about a mile away and next to the creek-side harbour). The Burnhams are all located either on the River Burn, or adjacent to its mouth, and the name Burnham may derive from this. Burnhamthorpe Road in Toronto and Mississauga, Ontario, Canada was named after Burnham Thorpe.

Union Mills or Roy's Mills are a Grade II listed combined tower mill and watermill at Burnham Overy, Norfolk, England which has been converted to residential accommodation.

Burnham Overy Staithe Windmill is a Grade II* listed building tower mill at Burnham Overy Staithe, Norfolk, England which has been converted to holiday accommodation.

Burnham Norton Friary was a Carmelite (White Friars) friary near Burnham Market in Norfolk, England. It is now a ruin. The friary was founded by Sir William Calthorp and Sir Ralph Hemenhale in 1241, the first Carmelite monastery to be founded following the expulsion of the order from Mount Carmel in Sinai in 1238. The theologian monk Robert Bale was prior of Burnham Norton for a time until his death in 1503. The friary was closed down in 1538, when occupied by only four poor monks, as part of the Dissolution of the Monasteries under King Henry VIII and passed undamaged into the ownership of Sir Richard Gresham. The grade I listed ruined gatehouse; the adjacent grade II* listed free-standing gable end of an unknown building remain; the almost intact precinct wall and the church still remain. The free-standing gable end’s closeness to the gatehouse suggests it was not part of the friary church.

The River Burn (also known as "Nelsons River") is a river in the northwest of the County of Norfolk, in the East of England. From its source to its mouth on the North Coast of Norfolk it is 12.3 kilometres (7.6 mi). The river has a fall of 36 metres to the sea.

St Margaret's Church is a round-tower church in Burnham Norton, Norfolk, England. Likely to have been built in the 11th century, the building retains many medieval architectural features, and is Grade I listed. It also retains an elaborately decorated 15th-century pulpit, considered one of the finest surviving examples of its type.

Burnham Market is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It is 19 miles (31 km) north-east of King's Lynn and 32 miles (51 km) north-west of Norwich. It is one of the Norfolk Burnhams. Three settlements, Burnham Sutton, Burnham Ulph, and Burnham Westgate merged to form Burnham Market. In 2020 it was rated among the "20 most beautiful villages in the UK and Ireland" by Condé Nast Traveler.

Burnham Market (originally Burnham) was a railway station which served the village of Burnham Market, Norfolk, England. Opened by the West Norfolk Junction railway in 1866, it closed with the line in 1952.

Burnham Westgate Hall is a Georgian country house near Burnham Market, Norfolk, about 2 mi (3.2 km) south of the north Norfolk coast. It was remodelled in Palladian style in the 1780s by John Soane: it was Soane's first substantial country house commission, immediately before he started Letton Hall in 1784. It was used to train domestic servants in the 1930s and 1940s, before becoming a local authority old people's home from 1945 to 1990. It has been a Grade II* listed building since 1953. It returned to use as a domestic house under the ownership of Patricia Rawlings and her partner Paul Zuckerman in 1991. It was put up for sale for £10 million in 2012, and there was speculation that it might be bought by Johnny Depp, but ultimately it was not sold then. It was put up for sale again in 2019, for £7 million and again in 2020 for £4.5 million.

Burnham Thorpe is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It is 19 miles (31 km) north-east of King's Lynn and 31 miles (50 km) north-west of Norwich and is one of the seven Norfolk Burnhams. At the 2021 census the population of the parish was 131, a slight decrease from 144 at the 2011 census. The village is notable for being the birthplace of Admiral Horatio Nelson, victor at the Battle of Trafalgar and one of Britain's greatest heroes. At the time of his birth, Nelson's father, Edmund Nelson, was rector of the church in Burnham Thorpe.

Peterstone Priory a house of Augustinian Canons, was a priory in Burnham Overy, Norfolk, England. It was founded before 1200 and incorporated 1449.

Holkham Brick Pit is a 0.5-hectare (1.2-acre) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest west of Wells-next-the-Sea in Norfolk, England. It is a Geological Conservation Review site, and it is in the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This is the best site displaying the Hunstanton Till, a glacial deposit dating the last glacial period, between 115,000 and 11,700 years ago. This is the furthest the ice reached in East Anglia during the Last Glacial Maximum, around 26,000 years ago. The site is private land with no public access, and no geology is visible as the pit has been filled in.
