Teffont Magna

Teffont is a civil parish in the south of Wiltshire, England, consisting of the villages of Teffont Magna and Teffont Evias. It is in the Nadder valley, north of the river, about 10 miles (16 km) west of Salisbury. The parish was created in 1934 by combining the two Teffonts. The population taken at the 2011 census was 248.

Teffont Evias is a small village and former civil parish in the Nadder valley in the south of Wiltshire, England. Edric Holmes described the village as "most delightfully situated", and Maurice Hewlett included Teffont in his list of the half dozen most beautiful villages in England. The present buildings are mostly of local stone, and several are thatched. The civil parish was combined in 1934 with neighbouring Teffont Magna to form a united Teffont parish.

Chilmark Quarries (grid reference ST974312) is a 9.65 hectare biological and geological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), in the ravine south of the village of Chilmark in Wiltshire, England. The SSSI was first notified in 1977. Its importance as a home for bats led to the site being designated in 2005 (together with Fonthill Grottoes) as a European Special Area of Conservation.The western section of the site is in Chilmark civil parish, while the eastern section (separated by a minor road) is in Teffont parish.

The West Wiltshire Downs is an area of downland in the west of the county of Wiltshire, England. The West Wiltshire Downs are geologically the same unit as Salisbury Plain to the north and Cranborne Chase to the south.The West Wiltshire Downs are split between two of the National Character Areas designated by Natural England: No. 134, Dorset Downs and Cranborne Chase; and No. 132, Salisbury Plain and West Wiltshire Downs.

Dinton Quarry (grid reference SU006308) is a 3,000 square metre geological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Wiltshire, notified in 1990. This long-disused quarry of Middle Purbeck limestone was the main source of the late Jurassic fossil insects described by Brodie in 1845.

Chilmark is a Wiltshire village and civil parish of some 150 houses straddling the B3089 road, 11 miles (18 km) west of Salisbury, England. The parish includes the hamlets of Mooray and Portash, both close to the south of Chilmark village; and the dispersed hamlet of Ridge, to the southwest. The stream through the village, often dry in summer, flows some two miles (3 km) south to join the River Nadder. The Fonthill estate extends into the west of the parish as far as Ridge.

Dinton Railway Cutting (grid reference SU008309) is a 2,600 square metre geological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Wiltshire, notified in 1990.

Sutton Mandeville is a small village and civil parish in Wiltshire, England, in the Nadder valley and towards the east end of the Vale of Wardour. The village lies south of the river and north of the A30 Shaftesbury-Wilton road, about 7 miles (11 km) west of Wilton and 2.5 miles (4 km) east of the large village of Tisbury.

Dinton railway station is a disused railway station which formerly served Dinton in Wiltshire, England. It was situated on the West of England Main Line from London Waterloo station to Exeter. It was opened in 1859 and closed to passengers in 1966 and to general goods traffic in 1967. In the First World War, it was the junction for the Fovant Military Railway. The station was about ½ mile from the centre of the village.

Philipps House (until 1916 Dinton House) is an early 19th-century Neo-Grecian country house at Dinton, overlooking the Nadder valley about 8 miles (13 km) west of Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. The house was built in 1816 by William Wyndham to the designs of Sir Jeffry Wyatville, replacing a 17th-century house. In 1916 the estate was bought by Bertram Philipps, who renamed the house after himself, then in 1943 gave the house and grounds to the National Trust. The is Grade II* listed and its parkland (known as Dinton Park is Grade II* on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.The house is built of Chilmark stone, a local stone also used for Salisbury Cathedral, and Wyatt is believed to have based his design on Pythouse, some seven miles (11 km) away at Newtown, near Tisbury. The house is two-storied with symmetrically set chimney stacks and a central lantern. The main (south) front has nine bays with an Ionic portico. The rooms are planned around a spacious square hall with an imperial staircase to the first floor. The house is one of the first in England to have a central heating system installed, which was achieved by pumping hot air from a boiler in the basement into the stairwell.

Lower Chicksgrove is a hamlet on the north bank of the River Nadder in the south of the county of Wiltshire, England, within the Vale of Wardour. It is about 2 miles (3.2 km) east of Tisbury and 10 miles (16 km) west of Salisbury. The settlement is recorded in the 12th century as Chicksgrove and a nearby settlement as Stoford; Chicksgrove was first recorded as Lower Chicksgrove and Stoford as Upper Chicksgrove in the later 19th century. Most of the settlement at Lower Chicksgrove in the later 18th century was along a north–south lane, west of the crossing of the Tisbury-Fovant and Chilmark-Ebbesbourne Wake roads, where the farmsteads belonging to Tisbury manor stood.Chicksgrove Manor, which is the largest of these to survive, is said to have been occupied by the Davies family from the 16th to 18th centuries, and was the birthplace of the lawyer, poet, and political writer Sir John Davies (1569-1626) who became Attorney General of Ireland. The Grade II* listed manor house, in rubble stone under a thatched roof, has 14th-century origins.For local government purposes, Lower Chicksgrove is part of the civil parish of Sutton Mandeville, having been transferred from Tisbury parish in 1986.Chicksgrove Quarry, a quarry south of the river extracting Chilmark stone, was part of Chicksgrove manor but is now in Tisbury parish. The 2009 film Morris: A Life with Bells On was partly filmed at the Compasses Inn which is south of the river, on the road to Sutton Mandeville in a hamlet marked on some maps as Chicksgrove.

Dinton is a village, civil parish and former manor in Wiltshire, England, in the Nadder valley on the B3089 road about 8 miles (13 km) west of Salisbury. The parish population was 696 at the 2011 census, estimated at 733 in 2019. The civil parish includes the village of Baverstock, about 1 mile (1.6 km) east of Dinton village.
