Burntwood Hall

St Michael and All Angels Church is the parish church of Great Houghton in South Yorkshire. The church is dedicated to St Michael, and was originally a private chapel and was built by Sir Edward Rodes, the High Sheriff of Yorkshire, who was a conspicuous Parliamentarian. It was built about 1650 and used for worship by his family and the tenants of his land. Sir Edward was a great friend of Oliver Cromwell, when he was the Lord Protector of England. He served in Cromwell's Privy Council and was also the Colonel of his Cavalry. Cromwell visited the church on its completion and approved of its simple design. Sir Edward died on 19 February 1666 and is buried in Darfield Church. His Coat of Arms appeared in stone on the east gable of the church. This mysteriously disappeared over the years but the space where it lay still remains. The first religious ceremony in the chapel was the baptism of one of the younger sons of Sir Edward by Mr Edward Bowles of York, one of the most eminent Presbyterian clergy of his day. Richard Taylor was the first officiating minister as Chaplain to the Rodes family. He had been prevented from exercising his ministry in public by the Act of Uniformity. The Rodes family were great patrons of nonconformity. The chapel at Great Houghton must have been well known throughout the country as a haven for persecuted clergy of the period. The chapel had a succession of non-conforming ministers who existed under Rode's protection. The chapel remained private for many years and it was not until 1849 that it became ‘Episcopally licensed’ for worship. It only became part of the Church of England (under Darfield parish) in 1906 and the first Anglican service was a Holy Communion which took place on 24 November 1908.

Carlton Main Brickworks (grid reference SE412081) is a 15.5 hectare (38.4 acre) geological site of Special Scientific Interest in South Yorkshire. It opened alongside Grimethorpe colliery in the mid-1890s, and has been producing quality bricks for well over a century. The site was notified in 1989.

Willowgarth High School was a state school in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. The school merged with Priory School and Sports College in 2011 to form Shafton Advanced Learning Centre (now Outwood Academy Shafton) The new school was initially based on both former school sites, but relocated to a new campus in 2012. The old school was subsequently demolished.

Grimethorpe is a village in the metropolitan borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. As of the 2011 census it has a population of 4,672. Grimethorpe is located in eastern Barnsley, and until the local government reorganisation of 1974, it was part of the Hemsworth district and constituency. The village is part of the North East ward of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council. For much of the 20th century Grimethorpe's economy was rooted in coal mining. Since the 1984–85 miners' strike, the downscaling of UK coal mining accelerated and international cheap open-cast mining provoked closure of its colliery in May 1993. In 1994 it was regarded as the poorest village in Britain.There are roads linking the village to some of the country's biggest arteries, and the village is home to approximately 50 businesses, including the online fashion retailer ASOS.

Grimethorpe Hall is a manor house in Grimethorpe, South Yorkshire, England. Built circa 1670 for Robert Seaton (also spelled Seton), it is thought to be in the style of York architect Robert Trollope. Around 1800 the hall passed to John Farrar Crookes of Tunbridge Wells. It was last used as a house in the 1960s and afterwards was purchased by the National Coal Board. The National Coal Board applied to demolish it in 1981 but, after a campaign by the Ancient Monuments Society, this was unsuccessful. The structure received statutory protection as a grade II* listed building in 1985. Proposals by later owners to convert the hall into a nursing home, restaurant or social housing came to naught and the hall fell into the ownership of the Crown Estate in 2016 after the company owning it was dissolved. Concerns have since been raised over the structure and a local campaign has been launched in an attempt to restore it.

Great Houghton is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England), on the border with West Yorkshire. It lies to the west of Thurnscoe, on the B6411 road, and is located at approximately 53° 33' 20" north, 1° 21' west, at an elevation of around 60 m above sea level. At the 2001 census it had a population of 2,261, increasing to 2,475 at the 2011 census.Great Houghton is a former mining village and its mines were served by the railway, which has since gone, but remains are still visible. The village has a primary school called Sandhill. The old school building that stood on the main street was demolished in 2007 and was replaced with a new Private Finance Initiative primary school. Some parts of Great Houghton were affected by the 2007 summer flooding, which caused extensive damage in neighbouring villages.

Hemsworth and South Kirkby railway station served the towns of Hemsworth and South Kirkby, in the historical county of West Riding of Yorkshire, England, from 1891 to 1932 on the Hull and Barnsley Railway.

Great Houghton Halt was a small railway station on the Dearne Valley Railway (DVR) situated between Goldthorpe and Thurnscoe Halt and Grimethorpe Halt. The halt served the village of Great Houghton in South Yorkshire, England. The station opened on 3 June 1912. Originally named Houghton Halt, it was renamed Great Houghton Halt a few weeks later, on 24 August 1912. At first, trains were operated on behalf of the DVR by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway; when that company amalgamated with the London and North Western Railway on 1 January 1922, the combined organisation (also known as the London and North Western Railway) absorbed the DVR on the same day.The station closed on 10 September 1951.

Little Houghton is a hamlet and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. At the 2001 census it had a population of 618, increasing to 659 at the 2011 Census.Access to the hamlet of Little Houghton is gained by travelling along Middlecliff Lane through the village of Middlecliffe. The larger village is made up of mainly council and ex-council houses. Little Houghton was previously the site of two large coal mines. Houghton Main was a deep shaft mine and Dearne Valley a drift mine. Both mines are now closed and their sites have been landscaped, which has been partly funded by money from the European Union. Before the coal mines, the village was involved in agriculture and there were a number of farms in the village with associated cottages. Only two of the old farm buildings remain, but some have recently been converted into housing. The two settlements come under Little Houghton Parish Council.

Hemsworth is a town and civil parish in the City of Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England. Historically within the West Riding of Yorkshire and had a population of 13,311 at the 2001 census, with it increasing to 13,533 at the 2011 Census.

Brierley () is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. The settlement is tightly clustered and green buffered on a modest escarpment close to the border with West Yorkshire, it is almost wholly in population south of the A628 road, and is less than 2 miles (3 km) to the south west of Hemsworth. Its late nineteenth century founded civil parish contained the pit village of Grimethorpe, and at the 2001 census had a population of 5,973, increasing to 7,267 in the 2011 Census. Brierley is at its core approximately 330 feet (100 m) above sea level on gently undulating slopes.

South Kirkby is a town in the City of Wakefield in West Yorkshire, England which is governed locally by South Kirkby and Moorthorpe Town Council. The town forms half of the civil parish of South Kirkby and Moorthorpe. The parish has a population of 10,979.
