Tharandt

The Forstbotanischer Garten Tharandt (lit. 'Forest Botanical Garden of Tharandt'; 33.4 hectares), also known as the Sächsisches Landesarboretum (‘Saxony State Arboretum’), is an arboretum maintained by the Dresden University of Technology. It is among the oldest arboreta in the world, and is located at Am Forstgarten 1, Tharandt, Saxony, Germany, and open daily except Friday in the warmer months. The arboretum was established in 1811 by Heinrich Cotta (1763–1844), founder of the Forestry College in Tharandt. In 1816, it was incorporated into the Royal Saxon Academy of Forestry, and in 1842 augmented by the Schweizerhaus Tharandt, a building in the Swiss style which now houses the arboretum museum. It has subsequently been expanded several times, most recently in 1998 with a new North American section (15 hectares). Today, the arboretum contains about 2,000 species and varieties of woody plants.

Tharandt station is a station on the Dresden–Werdau railway in the town of Tharandt in the German state of Saxony. Until the electrification of the line in 1966, Tharandt was an important stopover for the attachment of bank engines for operations on the Steil ramp up to Klingenberg-Colmnitz. Today, the station has only significance for the regional traffic. It is the terminus for most, but not all trains of Dresden S-Bahn's line S3.

Somsdorf is a municipal subdivision of Freital in Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge district. It lies in the west of Freital, between the Rote Weißeritz and the Wilde Weißeritz.

Weißig is a municipal subdivision of Freital in Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge district. It consists of two other villages, Oberweißig and Unterweißig.

The Wild Weißeritz (German: Wilde Weißeritz, Czech: Divoká Bystřice) is a river in the Czech Republic and in the German state of Saxony which drains the eastern Ore Mountains. It is the longest tributary of the Weißeritz. The valley of the Wild Weißeritz is almost free of settlements. The Wild Weißeritz runs through Tharandt just some kilometres before it forms the Weißeritz together with the tributary Red Weißeritz in Freital. The river feeds two water reservoirs for drinking water abstraction (Klingenberg Reservoir and Lehnmühle Reservoir).

The Red Weißeritz (German: Rote Weißeritz) is a river of Saxony, Germany. The Red Weißeritz is the right headstream of the Weißeritz. It is 36.5 km (22.7 mi) long. The river's source is the Eastern Ore Mountains near Altenberg at a height of about 787 metres. It drops through a height of 606 metres as it heads north-west, running through Schmiedeberg, the district town of Dippoldiswalde and ending in Freital where it forms the Weißeritz together with the longer tributary of the Wild Weißeritz. The Malter Reservoir was built between 1908 and 1913 between Dippoldiswalde and Freital for flood protection reasons after the 1897 floods. The deep valley is an important transport route. It is an historic approach to a major mountain pass over the Ore Mountains (the Graupen Pass). The Weisseritz railway runs through the Weißeritz valley up to Kipsdorf (a district of Altenberg), climbing about 350 metres in height. The B 170 federal road follows the river bank between Dippoldiswalde and Waldbärenburg where it leaves the valley, climbing through three hairpin turns. The Red Weißeritz caused massive destruction during the 2002 European floods. Housing and especially road infrastructure and the Weisseritz railway was destroyed or damaged over a wide area. The flood retention basin of the Malter Reservoir completely overflowed. The area around the source of the river received precipitation of up to 312 mm in 24 hours.

Kesselsdorf is a village in Saxony, Germany, part of the town of Wilsdruff. It is located close to the Saxon capital city of Dresden. The village is known for the decisive Battle of Kesseldorf between Austrians and Prussians on December 15, 1745 in the War of Austrian Succession.

The Oberhermsdorfer Bach is a river of Saxony, Germany. It flows into the Wiederitz in Freital.
