Hoddom Castle

Hoddom is a small settlement and civil parish in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, dating back to the 8th century.

Ecclefechan railway station was a station which served the rural area around Ecclefechan, south of Lockerbie in Applegarth parish, Scottish county of Dumfries and Galloway. It was served by local trains on what is now known as the West Coast Main Line. The nearest station for Ecclefechan is now at Lockerbie.

Kinmount House is a 19th-century country house in the parish of Cummertrees in the historic county of Dumfriesshire in Dumfries and Galloway region, Scotland. It is located 3+1⁄2 miles (5.6 km) west of Annan. The house was designed by Sir Robert Smirke for the 6th Marquess of Queensberry and completed in 1820. It is protected as a category A listed building, and the grounds are included on the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland.

Brydekirk (Scottish Gaelic: Eaglais Bhride) is a village in Annandale in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland located approximately 4 km north of Annan. The village was a planned the concept of the Paisley-Dirom family of Mount Annan, set around a bridge over the River Annan. Construction began in around 1822.

Annandale (Gaelic: Srath Anann) is a strath in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, named after the dale of the River Annan. It runs north–south through the Southern Uplands from Annanhead (north of Moffat) to Annan on the Solway Firth, and in its higher reaches it separates the Moffat hills on the east from the Lowther hills to the west. A 53-mile (85 km) long-distance walking route called Annandale Way running through Annandale (from the source of the River Annan to the sea) was opened in September 2009.

Thomas Carlyle's Birthplace is a house in Ecclefechan, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, UK, in which Thomas Carlyle, who was to become a pre-eminent man of letters, was born in 1795. The house was built in 1791 by Carlyle's father James and James' brothers John and Tom, stonemasons all. It is owned by the National Trust for Scotland, registered as a Category A listed building. Architecturally, the home exemplifies 18-century Scottish Vernacular. It first opened to the public in 1881 and remains much as it was then. Many of Carlyle's belongings are housed along with a collection of portraits and photographs relating to his life. Carlyle lived here with his brother John Aitken Carlyle who would go on to translate Dante's Inferno into English. It was from here that Thomas Carlyle walked nearly one hundred miles in order to attend the University of Edinburgh at the age of 13, intending for the ministry.

Powfoot Halt railway station was a railway station in Powfoot, near Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, south of Cummertrees serving the workers at the MOD Powfoot Nitro-cellulose factory within the Parish of Cummertrees.

Ecclefechan (Scottish Gaelic: Eaglais Fheichein) is a small village located in Dumfries and Galloway in the south of Scotland. The village is famous for being the birthplace of Thomas Carlyle. Ecclefechan lies in the valley of the Mein Water, a tributary of the River Annan, 6+1⁄4 miles (10 kilometres) south of Lockerbie, five miles (eight kilometres) north of Annan and eight miles (thirteen kilometres) northwest of the English border. The A74(M) motorway runs immediately north of the village and Junction 19 is just northwest of the village. The High Street of the village has a burn which runs through a culvert below it. This culvert was constructed in 1875 by Dr George Arnott at his own expense.

Cummertrees railway station was a railway station in Dumfries and Galloway south of Dumfries, serving the village of Cummertrees. The village lies some 3 miles (4.8 km) west of Annan and 12 miles (19 km) south of Lockerbie.

Powfoot is a coastal village in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland that lies on the northern shore of the Solway Firth.It is located approximately 4 miles south west of the town of Annan and approximately 1.5 miles south east of the neighbouring village of Cummertrees. The Pow water, a local river runs through the village.

The village of Dalton is a small settlement about 10 miles (16 km) southeast of Dumfries and 4 miles (6.4 km) south of Lockerbie, in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. The village has an 18th-century church, one of its past ministers being The Rev. John W. Morris MA, who is buried near the southern boundary of the church. Several families have lived here for more than 150 years, including the: Byers, Bells (Almagill), Shuttleworths (Almagill), Carruthers (Dormont), Murrays (Murraythwaite), and Steels (Kirkwood). Dalton has a Thai restaurant and pub, and a well used village hall. About 1 mile (1.6 km) west of Dalton on the Carrutherstown road is Dalton Pottery. On the farms around Dalton, there are several self-catering, stone-built, holiday cottages at Kirkwood - offering tourist accommodation and walking, as well as fishing on the River Annan.
