Stones Green

Wix is a village and civil parish in the Tendring district of north-east Essex, England. It lies in a small valley about 2 miles (3 km) south of the Stour Estuary. The valley drains east towards Harwich. Formerly an important crossroads on the route to Harwich, it has now been bypassed by the A120 road. The place-name 'Wix' is first attested in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it appears as Wica. It appears as Wikes in 1191 in the Feet of Fines, and as Wiches in the Curia Regis Rolls in 1198. The name is the plural of the Old English 'wic', meaning a dairy farm.St Mary's Church, Wix has a detached belfry, which stands in the churchyard and contains one bell. In 1961, the then owner of Wix Abbey Farm was ploughing in the church which was overgrown when he struck a large piece of dressed limestone, which with further investigation revealed a large stone coffin with a skeleton inside. Archaeologists were called in and dated the coffin to circa 1140, due to the decorative cross on the lid having Saxon influences. The skeleton is very likely that of Alexander de Wix, a founder of Wix Priory, which occupied the church grounds until the 12th century. This coffin is now on show, or was until recently on display in Colchester Castle. An almost identical but slightly smaller coffin from the same site can be found in the bellhouse, in the churchyard. There is one pub, The Waggon at Wix, which on Saturday evenings has live bands. There is also a village shop in Colchester Road next to Anglian Timber. There is an equestrian centre in Clacton Road which hosts dressage, show jumping and carriage driving.

Beaumont-cum-Moze (grid reference TM175250) is a civil parish in the Tendring district of Essex, England. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 352, reducing to 339 at the 2011 Census. The parish includes the hamlets of Beaumont and Moze Cross. The place-name 'Beaumont' was originally Fulanpettæ in a Saxon charter of circa 995, and Fulepet in the Domesday Book of 1086, meaning 'foul pit'. By 1175-80 it had become Bealmont, meaning 'beautiful hill', a very early example of successful rebranding. The place-name 'Moze' is first attested in the Domesday Book, where it appears as Mosa. This is from the Old English mos meaning 'marsh' or 'moss'.Julian Byng, 1st Viscount Byng of Vimy lived at Thorpe Hall in Thorpe-le-Soken and is buried at the 11th-century Parish Church of St Leonard in Beaumont-cum-Moze.Beaumont Cut is a derelict canal in the parish.

Wix Priory was a Benedictine nunnery in Wix, Essex, England, founded in around 1125–1135 and dissolved in 1525. The buildings have not survived except for the priory church, which is still in existence as St Mary's Church, Wix.

St Mary's Church is a Grade II listed Anglican parish church in the village of Wix, Essex, England. Formerly associated with a priory from the Middle Ages, the present church dates largely from the 18th century.

Comarques is an 18th-century country house in Thorpe-le-Soken, Essex, England. It has been attributed to the architect, Sir Robert Taylor. Named after Captain Comarque, a Huguenot refugee who owned the estate in the early 18th century, the house is in the Queen Anne style. The author Arnold Bennett lived at Comarques between 1913 and 1921. There is a tradition that Clement Attlee lived at the house as a child, but Historic England does not support this claim. Comarques is a Grade II* listed building.

Tendring is a village and civil parish in Essex. It gives its name to the Tendring District and before that the Tendring Hundred. Its name was given to the larger groupings because it was at the centre, not because it was larger than the other settlements. In 2011 the parish had a population of 736 and the district had a population of 138,048. The linear village straddles the B1035 from Manningtree to Thorpe-le-Soken.The parish includes the settlements of Goose Green, Tendring Green and Tendring Heath. The church is dedicated to St Edmund. The Tendring Union Workhouse was located at Tendring Heath. In 1948 the workhouse was converted into an NHS geriatric hospital, which closed in the 1980s.

Beaumont Cut was a 1-kilometre-long (1,090 yd) canal linking Beaumont Quay, in the parish of Beaumont-cum-Moze, Tendring, Essex, England, with Hamford Water and the North Sea. It was opened in 1832 but fell into disuse and was closed at some time in the 1930s.

Bradfield is a village and civil parish in Essex, England. It is located about 3 miles (5 km) east of Manningtree and is 31 miles (50 km) northeast from the county town of Chelmsford. The village is in the district of Tendring and the parliamentary constituency of North Essex. There is a Parish Council. The 2001 National Census recorded a population of 1,094, rising to 1,112 at the 2011 Census.The Anglican church is dedicated to Saint Lawrence. One of the windows commemorates Edwin Harris Dunning, the first pilot to land an aircraft on a moving ship, as does another memorial within the north transept. His grave lies in the churchyard. The village is close to the River Stour. Bradfield is home to Bradfield Primary School.

Oakfield Wood is a 2.8-hectare (6.9-acre) nature reserve west of Wrabness in Essex. It is managed by the Essex Wildlife Trust.This is former farmland which is being converted into a "green burial ground", overlooking the Stour Estuary. A native broadleaved tree is planted for each burial with a wooden plaque at the base. When the burial ground is full, it will be managed by the trust as a nature reserve.There is access to the site carpark from Wheatsheaf Lane by a track which leads through Wrabness Nature Reserve carpark.

Thorpe-le-Soken is a village and civil parish in the Tendring district of Essex, England. It is located east of Colchester, west of Walton-on-the-Naze and Frinton-on-Sea, and north of Clacton-on-Sea.

Wrabness Nature Reserve is a 27 hectare Local Nature Reserve on the south bank of the River Stour, west of Wrabness in Essex. It is managed by the Essex Wildlife Trust.This site has grassland, marsh, scrub and woodland. It has a diverse bird life, such as yellowhammers, whitethroats, song thrushes and short-eared owls. There are also winter visitors including black-tailed godwits, grey plovers and turnstones. Plants include corn mints and hairy buttercups, and there is a wide variety of invertebrates. The grassland is grazed to prevent the vegetation from becoming too coarse.There is access from Whitesheaf Lane.
