Thionville station

The siege of Thionville was a battle of the Franco-Prussian War which occurred in Thionville of the Moselle from November 13 to November 24, 1870. The small French garrison repulsed an attempted attack on August 14. It was subjected to a blockade and then besieged from November 13. After the capitulation of Metz, on October 28, 1870, the Prussians move part of their powerful artillery to Thionville. Bombed from November 22, the square surrendered on November 24. The capture of Thionville and that of Montmédy a month later gave the Germans control of the railroad to the Picardy front.

Thionville (French pronunciation: ​[tjɔ̃vil]; Luxembourgish: Diddenuewen [ˈdidənuəvən]; German: Diedenhofen [ˈdiːdn̩ˌhoːfn̩] ) is a city in the northeastern French department of Moselle. The city is located on the left bank of the river Moselle, opposite its suburb Yutz.

Its population was 80,927 in 2019, of which 40,778 in Thionville proper.

The arrondissement of Thionville-Ouest is a former arrondissement of France in the Moselle department in the Lorraine region. In 2015 it was merged into the new arrondissement of Thionville. It had 30 communes, and its population was 121,927 (2012).

Yutz (French pronunciation: ​[jyts]; German: Jeutz; Lorraine Franconian/Luxembourgish: Jäiz [jæːɪts]) is a commune in the Moselle department in Grand Est in north-eastern France, close to the borders with both Luxembourg and Germany. It was created in 1971 by merging the former communes of Basse-Yutz and Haute-Yutz. Macquenom is also a part of the commune since 1810. The town is located by the river Moselle where it borders with the city of Thionville. The famous Basse Yutz Flagons, considered by many to be the apogee of Celtic art, were found in the area. They now form part of the British Museum's collection.The inhabitants are called Yussois.
