Atwell Township is one of fourteen townships in Rowan County, North Carolina, United States. The township had a population of 11,226 according to the 2000 census. Geographically, Atwell Township occupies 59.65 square miles (154.5 km2) in southwestern Rowan County. There are no incorporated municipalities in Atwell Township; however, there are other unincorporated communities located here, including Enochville. The township's southern boundary is with Cabarrus County.

Back Creek Presbyterian Church and Cemetery is a historic Presbyterian church and cemetery in Mount Ulla, Rowan County, North Carolina currently affiliated with the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). It was named for a nearby stream, which was back of Sills Creek and called Back Creek.

Gen. William H. Kerr House is a historic home located on Deal Road (formerly Beatties Ford Road), near Enochville, Rowan County, North Carolina. The house was built between 1817 and 1820, and is a two-story, three-bay, Federal style frame dwelling. It has a rebuilt front porch and one-story ell and shed dating to the late 1930s. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.William Kerr, of Scots-Irish descent, was a member of the Rowan County Militia and in December 1817 he became colonel of the 7th Brigade of the North Carolina Militia. In 1827 Kerr was promoted to the rank of brigadier general of the 7th Brigade. He was born in 1778 (probably in VA), died in 1844 (while living at the above dwelling), and is buried at Centre Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Mooresville, Iredell County, North Carolina.

Owen-Harrison House is a historic plantation house located near Mill Bridge, Rowan County, North Carolina. It was built in 1843, and is a 2+1⁄2-story, four-bay, double pile brick dwelling with Federal/Greek Revival-style design elements. The front facade has a restored one-story pedimented porch and there are two chimneys on each gable end.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

John Carlyle and Anita Sherrill House is a historic home located at Mount Ulla, Rowan County, North Carolina. It was built in 1937–1938, and is a two-story, Colonial Revival-style brick dwelling. It has a tall hipped roof and a classical one-story entrance porch supported by Tuscan order columns. Also on the property is a contributing garage built about 1920.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

The Rankin–Sherrill House is a historic home located at Mount Ulla, Rowan County, North Carolina. It was built about 1855, and is a two-story, three-bay, "L"-plan brick dwelling with Greek Revival-style design elements. It has a low hipped roof, and the front facade has a simple hipped roof Colonial Revival porch. Also on the property is a contributing Smokehouse/Oairy/Well House built about 1853.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Hargrave House was a historic home located near Statesville, Iredell County, North Carolina. It was built about 1860, and is a two-story, three-bay, Late Greek Revival style frame dwelling. It features a two-story center bay portico supported by Doric order columns. Also on the property is a contributing smokehouse.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Bear Poplar is an unincorporated community mostly within Steele Township in Rowan County, North Carolina, United States. Some of the western part extends into neighboring Mount Ulla Township.

Thomas Gillespie (c. 1719 – December 13, 1786) was a large plantation owner in mid-to-late 18th-century North Carolina and served as commissary of the Rowan County Regiment in the North Carolina militia during the American Revolution. He spent his early life in Augusta County, Virginia before migrating to Anson County, North Carolina in about 1750, where he lived most of his life on Sills Creek in the area that became Rowan County, North Carolina in 1753. He and his wife and son were the first white settlers west of the Yadkin River. He owned a plantation of over 1,000 acres on Sills Creek in Rowan County, as well as 6,000 acres in the area of western North Carolina that became part of the state of Tennessee in 1796. He was an early elder in the Thyatira Presbyterian Church in Rowan County, which had been established by 1750. Thomas was the great-grandfather of U.S. President James K. Polk through the lineage of his daughter Lydia, who married Captain James Knox and gave birth to Jane Gracey Knox, mother of the President.

Thyatira Presbyterian Church, Cemetery, and Manse is a historic church at 220 White Road off NC 150 in Mill Bridge in Rowan County, North Carolina, ten miles west of the town of Salisbury. Presbyterians have been worshiping at this site since at least 1753.The current Gothic Revival church building was constructed between 1858 and 1860 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The church was originally organized as early as 1753 as Cathey's Meeting Place on its current site on Cathey's Creek. The adjacent cemetery features gravestones dating back to 1755. The church is still in active use, and the congregation is currently affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA).
