Arkley Lane and Pastures

On 29 November 1975, former Formula One champion and team owner Graham Hill died when the Piper Aztec light aircraft he was piloting crashed near Arkley in Hertfordshire, United Kingdom, while on approach to Elstree Airfield. The other five passengers on board, forming the core of his Embassy Hill Formula One team, were also killed. The group was returning from a trip to southern France to test the new Hill GH2, one month after the end of the 1975 Formula One season. The accident occurred at night, and at the time foggy conditions prevailed in the area. An investigation into the crash was inconclusive, but pilot error was deemed the most likely explanation.

Arkley is an area of north London, England, within the London Borough of Barnet. It is located 10.6 miles (17.1 km) north-northwest of Charing Cross. It consists of a long village strung out between Barnet and Stirling Corner, roughly centred on the "Gate" pub, and composed of the ancient hamlets of Barnet Gate, Rowley Green and Arkley. At 482 feet (147 m) above sea level, Arkley is one of the highest points in London.

Arkley War Memorial is a war memorial in Arkley, in the London Borough of Barnet. It was unveiled in 1920 to commemorate World War I, with later additions for World War II. It is grade II listed with Historic England.

St Peter's Church, is an early Victorian Church of England church in Arkley, in the London Borough of Barnet. It is a grade II listed building.

Glebe Lane Pastures is a Site of Borough Importance for Nature Conservation, Grade I, in Arkley in the London Borough of Barnet. It consists of five fields off Glebe Lane, some managed for hay while others are grazed by horses. It contains flower-rich unimproved grassland which is dominated by Yorkshire Fog, with a good variety of other grasses, and Tufted hair-grass is dominant in damper areas. The most important feature of the site is the diversity of its old meadow plants.The site is private, and can only be viewed from Barnet Road east of Glebe Lane.

Saffron Green Meadows or Saffron Green Pasture is an area of public open space and farmland north of Arkley in Hertsmere, Hertfordshire, England. It is owned and managed by Hertfordshire County Council, and is part of the Watling Chase Community Forest and the London Green Belt. In the late 1990s, the area was identified as suitable for environmental management as it had been untenanted for several years, and as rough grazing pasture it was a rich and scarce ecological habitat which also had recreational potential. An archeological survey identified a pre-Roman landscape pattern, possibly dating back to the Bronze Age. In 2002-03 4.5 hectares was planted as woodland, and a tenant was found to manage the land for grazing. The 42-hectare (100-acre) site had previously had no public access, but an area of 5.5 hectares is now public open space, with a bridle way which connects with Arkley Lane, a Local Nature Reserve in Barnet. There is also public access from Galley Lane.A wide variety of wild species have been found on the site, and it is one of the largest wildlife sites in Hertsmere.Mimmshall Brook, a tributary of the River Colne, skirts the site, and the Saffron Green radio masts of Gold radio station are close by.

Barnet Common was an area of common land to the south of the town of Chipping Barnet in what is now north London. The Common was created after a wood was cleared in the 16th century and was mostly used by local people to graze their animals. It was the location of a Digger colony and of the Barnet Physic Well at which mineral water was consumed. Part of the Common was enclosed in 1729 and the rest in 1815, leading to development on the north and south sides, and later infilling.

Whitings Hill Open Space is a large public open space in Chipping Barnet in the London Borough of Barnet. It is mainly grassed with clumps of young trees, planted as part of the Watling Chase Community Forest, and a few mature trees. There are good views in all directions from the top of Whitings Hill. A small stream, a tributary of Dollis Brook, flows through the site. There is access from Shelford Road, Quinta Drive, Brett Road and Hackforth Close.

Rowley Green Common is a six hectare Local Nature Reserve and a Site of Importance Metropolitan for Nature Conservation in Arkley, north London. It is owned by the London Borough of Barnet. It is also registered common land.It is mainly woodland and heathland, although the most important habitat is the peat bog, one of very few left in London. This hosts star sedge, which is rare in London. The site has hedges at least three hundred years old, and a large pond is also of botanical interest.It was once part of Shenleybury Manor in the parish of Shenley, Hertfordshire. The site has a long history of use. Gravel was once dug on it and this led to the formation of ponds and bog hollows. Cattle were grazed on it until the 1940s and the army used it for manoeuvres during the Second World War. Rowley Green was obtained as public open space in 1934 when Barnet Urban District Council bought the land from the Lord of the Manor. It was declared a Local Nature Reserve by the London Borough of Barnet in 1991, the first site in the borough to gain this status.Access is from Rowley Lane, next to Rowley Green Farm.

Arkley South Fields are a Site of Borough Importance for Nature Conservation, Grade II, in Arkley in the London Borough of Barnet. It is an extensive area of set-aside agricultural fields with hedgerows and ditches. It is not of great botanical interest, and its conservation value lies in its breeding birds, especially skylarks, a declining species which is a priority under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. It also supports breeding meadow pipits, kestrels, reed buntings, whitethroats, willow warblers and green woodpeckers.There is no public access, but going down Barnet Gate Lane from Barnet Road, it can be viewed after the last houses on the left.

Barnet Countryside Centre is a 3.3 hectare Site of Local Importance for Nature Conservation in High Barnet in the London Borough of Barnet. It is run by the Friends of Barnet Countryside Centre as a nature reserve and to provide environmental education for schools.The site has areas of native woodland which support a wide variety of birds. Several small ponds have frogs, newts and the ruddy darter dragonfly. More open areas have a good variety of insects including the small copper butterfly and Roesel's bush-cricket.The site was formerly a playing field, and in 1975 it was established as an environmental education centre. In 2009 Barnet Council gave planning permission to the Noah's Ark Children's Hospice for the redevelopment of the site. The nature reserve is still maintained by the Friends, but there is no public access. It can be viewed from Byng Road and from a footpath between Byng Road and Cavendish Road.

Rowley Lodge Field is a Site of Borough Importance for Nature Conservation, Grade II, in Arkley in the London Borough of Barnet.Rowley Lodge Field is an old hay meadow, with flower rich grassland and scattered oak trees. It has a good diversity of wild flowers, including great burnet and pignut, both characteristic of unimproved grassland. Patches of acid grassland are dominated by red fescue, and also contain abundant sheep's sorrel and tormentil.Access is by a footpath from Rowley Lane near the junction with Rowley Green Road. A stile on the left then leads to another footpath which goes through Rowley Lodge Field to a small wood and then to Brickfield Lane.
