Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park

The Battle of Prairie Grove was a battle of the American Civil War fought on December 7, 1862. While tactically indecisive, the battle secured the Union control of northwestern Arkansas. A division of Union troops in the Army of the Frontier, commanded by James G. Blunt, was posted in northwestern Arkansas after winning the Battle of Cane Hill on November 28. The 1st Corps, Trans-Mississippi Army, commanded by Thomas C. Hindman moved towards Blunt's division in order to attack while it was isolated. However, Blunt was reinforced by two divisions commanded by Francis J. Herron, leading Hindman to take a defensive position on some high ground known as Prairie Grove. Herron attempted to assault Hindman's lines twice, but both attacks were beaten off with heavy casualties. Hindman responded to the repulse of each of Herron's attacks with unsuccessful counterattacks of his own. Later in the day, Blunt arrived and attacked Hindman's flank. Eventually, both sides disengaged and the fighting reached an inconclusive result. However, the unavailability of reinforcements forced Hindman's army to retreat from the field, giving the Union army a strategic victory and control of northwestern Arkansas. Union forces reported suffering 1,251 casualties (including 175 dead); Confederate forces reported 1,317 casualties (between 164 and 204 dead). Confederate forces suffered from severe demoralization, and many conscripts deserted. The Confederates had to leave many of their dead on the field, in piles and surrounded with makeshift barriers to keep feral pigs from eating the corpses. Today, a portion of the battlefield is preserved within Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park.

The Prairie Grove Airlight Outdoor Telephone Booth is a telephone booth installed at the southwest corner of East Douglas and Parker Streets in Prairie Grove, Arkansas, United States. It is an early example of the Airlight, the first American mass-produced weather-resistant metal telephone booth, which made possible widespread installation of outdoor payphones. In 2015, it became the first phone booth on the National Register of Historic Places.

Prairie Grove is a city in Washington County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 7,045 at the 2020 Census. It is part of the Northwest Arkansas region, and home to Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park.

The Borden House is a historic house on the grounds of Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park in Prairie Grove, Arkansas. In the Battle of Prairie Grove on December 7, 1862, the original Borden House was one of the central points of the Confederate line, and was the scene of heavy casualties. The Borden House was burned the next day. Archibald Borden built the current house on the original site. It is a 1+1⁄2-story wood-frame house, five bays wide, with a side-gable roof pierced by three gabled dormers. A porch extends across the center three bays of the front.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, and included in an enlarged National Register listing for the battlefield in 1992.

Prairie Grove High School is an accredited comprehensive public high school serving students in grades nine through twelve in Prairie Grove, Arkansas, United States. Established in 1901, the school supports families in Prairie Grove, a portion of Farmington, and nearby unincorporated communities in Washington County; it is the sole high school administered by the Prairie Grove School District.

The Prairie Grove Commercial Historic District encompasses part of the historic commercial downtown area of Prairie Grove, Arkansas. It extends for about 1-1/2 blocks on the south side of East Buchanan Street, from Mock Street to an alley east of Neal Street. The buildings on this side of the street more mostly built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and are good examples of brick and stone commercial architecture of the period. The district also includes a small portion of Mock Park, and two buildings constructed in the 1960s.The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2018.

The North Mock Street Historic District encompasses a pair of commercial industrial buildings at 112 and 116 North Mock Street in Prairie Grove, Arkansas. The B.F. Carl Building, at 116 North Mock, was built in 1904, and originally served as a furniture and casket maker's store. The B.H. Harrison Masonic Temple, at 112 North Mock, was built in 1903, and has served as the home to the local Masonic lodge since. The two buildings are well-preserved examples of early 20th-century commercial architecture, featuring pressed metal storefronts with Classical features.The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2018.

The Southern Mercantile Building is a historic commercial building at 107 East Buchanan in Prairie Grove, Arkansas. It is a single-story brick and masonry structure, with a stuccoed parapet. It consists of two separate buildings, one dating to 1883, that were combined under the unifying parapet about 1920. The building is the largest and best-preserved example of that period's commercial architecture in the city. It served for many years as Prairie Grove's largest and most important general store, finally closing its doors in 1987.The buildings was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

The Prairie Grove Cemetery is a historic cemetery on West Buchanan and Kate Smith Streets in Prairie Grove, Washington County, Arkansas. Located just west of downtown Prairie Grove, the cemetery is the burial ground for many of the area's early settlers, with the oldest known burial occurring in 1818. It has more than 3,000 interments, and continues in active use. It is owned and maintained by a private not-for-profit cemetery association.The historic portion of the cemetery (about 2.2 acres (0.89 ha) of its eastern half) was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.

The Highway B-29 Bridge is a historic bridge in Prairie Grove, Arkansas. It is a single-span concrete arch bridge, carrying Washington County Route 623 across the Illinois River. The arch has a span of 97 feet (30 m), and the total structure length is 100 feet (30 m). Its deck is 17 feet (5.2 m) wide, and the bridge is typically 20 feet (6.1 m) above the water. Built in 1923, the bridge is one of the first built in the county by the Luten Bridge Company, which used an innovative technique involving metal rings (polished for visual effect on this bridge) that reduced the amount of material required for the structure.The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

The Lake-Bell House is a historic house in rural Washington County, Arkansas. It is located just north of a westward bend in County Road 80 on the north side of Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park. It is a single-story brick structure, with a side-gable roof and a gabled front entry portico with square columns. The front facade is a spare three bays wide, and the main block is but one bay deep, but obscures a rear ell that enlarges the building substantially. The house's construction date is uncertain, but it was probably built c. 1870 by Milton F. Lake, who moved to the area after the American Civil War.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Viney Grove (formerly Vineygrove) is an unincorporated community in Marrs Hill Township, Washington County, Arkansas, United States. It is located north of Prairie Grove and Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park along County Road 37.A post office was established at Viney Grove in 1870, and remained in operation until 1905.
