Stoke, Suffolk

Ipswich Stoke Hill railway station was the northern terminus of the Eastern Union Railway line from Colchester to Ipswich from its opening in June 1846 until 1860 when the present Ipswich station opened at the other end of the Stoke tunnel. It was located in Croft Street, Stoke. Trains from London terminated at the station but from November 1846 when a new line was built by the Ipswich and Bury Railway to Bury St Edmunds trains from Bury used to pass the station, stop at Halifax Junction a short distance to the south and propel back into the terminus usually using the western platform. Trains for Bury would reverse out as far as Halifax Junction before travelling north.The station was designed by Frederick Barnes who also designed a number of other early railway stations and bridges in East Anglia.The EUR and I&BR (who shared many directors, same engineer and secretary) worked as one organisation from January 1847. For more than one hundred and twenty years after the station's closure, the site was in use as railway sidings. These consisted of a carriage and wagon works and Ipswich engine shed. Subsequently the site had its tracks removed and was redeveloped, including Bruff Road, named in honour of Peter Bruff the engineer who brought the railway to Ipswich.

Saint Mary at Stoke is a Grade I listed Anglican church in the Old Stoke area of Ipswich. on the junction of Stoke Street and Belstead Road in Ipswich, Suffolk. The church stands in a prominent position near the foot of a ridge, just south west of Stoke Bridge and the town centre. Its parish was a small farming community which saw a great increase in population with the coming of the railway to this part of Ipswich. It was once governed by Ely, a fact lightly made much of by a politician of Stoke. In 1995 its parish was subsumed into the South West Ipswich Team Ministry in the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich.The building is made up of a small medieval church and a large Victorian extension designed by William Butterfield in 1872. A church has existed on this site since the 10th Century. It is probably one of the St Marys mentioned in the Domesday Book.The original nave (now the north aisle) has a medieval single hammer beam roof, with moulded wall plates, angels with shields at the ends of the hammer beams, and figures underneath. The angels are Victorian replacements for those destroyed by iconoclasts. The church was visited by William Dowsing. There is a medieval piscina. Richard Hall Gower is buried in a vault of the church.

Stoke Bridge in Ipswich carries Bridge Street (A137) over the point at which the River Gipping becomes the River Orwell. It carries traffic into Ipswich from the suburb of Over Stoke. The bridge consists of two separate structures and is just upstream from Ipswich dock on a tidal section of the river. In 1789, Robert Ransome moved to Ipswich begin the “Orwell Works company employeeing 1500 men. His fourth patent in 1808 was for improvements on the wheel and spring ploughs. He was then joined in business by his two sons and the firm “Ransome and Sons” was one of the first to build iron bridges. The Stoke Bridge at Ipswich was constructed by them in 1818.

Stoke Hall was a Georgian stately home in Ipswich, in the county of Suffolk, England. It was built in 1744 and the main house was demolished in 1915. The stables and the underground cellars still survive. The cellars were a major air raid shelter in the Second World War.

Stoke Mill was an historic watermill located in Ipswich, Suffolk. It was located on the north bank of the River Orwell next to Stoke Bridge. It was on Bridge Street where there is now a skate park.

Ipswich engine shed was an engine shed located in Ipswich, Suffolk on the Great Eastern Main Line. It was located just south of Stoke tunnel and the current Ipswich railway station. Locomotives accessed the site from Halifax Junction which was also the junction for the Griffin Wharf branch of Ipswich docks. The depot opened in 1846 and closed in 1968 although the site remained in railway use for a further thirty years. In British Railways days it was allocated the code 32B.

Cranfield Mill is a 23 storey, mixed-used development located on the Ipswich Waterfront with access from College Street in Ipswich, Suffolk, England. The Mill was the first phase of the Cranfields Mill development at Albion Quay on the waterfront at a cost of £42 million and was designed by John Lyall Architects and was proposed to be the 'landmark' building of Ipswich. The development had financial difficulties and was never fitted out. The only occupant of the building is Dance East.

St Peter's Church (also known as St Peter's by the Waterfront) is one of the twelve medieval churches in the ancient borough of Ipswich, England. An Augustinian priory dedicated to St Peter and Paul occupied a six-acre site to the north and east of the church. As the secular canons regularly used the chancel for religious purposes, leaving the nave for use of parishioners, the church was also known as St Peter and Paul's. The church is located between College Street and Star Lane, with St Peters Street leading north into Ipswich town centre.

St Mary-at-the-Quay Church is a former Anglican church in Ipswich, Suffolk, England. The medieval building is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. and since September 2021 it has been used by River Church to implement an approach to evangelicism developed by Holy Trinity Brompton as part of the network of HTB church plants. The church originally served the thriving industry around the docks area of the town and those that worked there. After closing for regular worship in the 1950s the church was transferred to the CCT in 1973 and underwent a major restoration programme completing in 2016.

River Church Ipswich is an Anglican church in Ipswich, Suffolk, England. It is part of the network of HTB church plants. River Church is based at St Mary-at-the-Quay in the Waterfront area of central Ipswich.

Stoke Tunnel Cutting, Ipswich is a 2.2-hectare (5.4-acre) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Ipswich in Suffolk. It is a Geological Conservation Review site.This fossiliferous site dates to the late Marine Isotope Stage 7, around 190,000 years ago. It is part of a high level terrace of the River Orwell and it has European pond tortoises, lions, mammoths, woolly rhinoceroses, horses and voles.There is no public access to the site.
