CMA CGM Tower

CMA CGM S.A. is a French container transportation and shipping company. It is the world’s 3rd largest container shipping company, using 257 shipping routes between 420 ports in 160 countries. Its headquarters are in Marseille, France The name is an acronym of two predecessor companies, Compagnie Maritime d'Affrètement (CMA) and Compagnie Générale Maritime (CGM), which translate as "Maritime Freighting Company" and "General Maritime Company".

Euroméditerranée (French pronunciation: ​[øʁɔmeditɛʁane]) is an urban renewal project underway in Marseille to create an ecodistrict in the neighbourhood of La Joliette. The project was launched in 1995 with the initiative of Mayor Robert Vigouroux and the State. The agreement for the establishment of a public agency of development was signed in 1994, working on an area of 310 hectares. Since 2007, Euroméditerranée Act 2 has extended the scope to 170 new hectares north. This project is funded by the European Union, the State, the Regional Council, the Departmental Council, the urban community and the City of Marseille. The Euroméditerranée eco-district is home to the Thassalia project, Europe’s first geothermal marine power station, which uses the waters of the Mediterranean to cool buildings in the summer and warm them in the winter. Among the achievements of Euroméditerranée figure: the Docks renovation into offices, the renovation of the silo into a theater, the renovation of the Rue de la République, the construction of the CMA CGM Tower (33 floors, 147 metres). The budget of the project amounts to €7 billion investment, of which €5 billion of private investment.

La Marseillaise is an office skyscraper in the Euroméditerranée, Marseille, France. It is part of Les Quais d'Arenc development complex and located near the CMA CGM Tower, the city's tallest building. It has 31 floors with an overall height of 135 m (443 ft). The building construction started in 2015 and finished in 2018. It was developed by Constructa Urban Systems and designed by Ateliers Jean Nouvel. It is known for its innovative tricolor facade design and ranked second in 2018 Emporis Skyscraper Award.

The Arenc affair began on April 16, 1975 in Marseille, France, when attorney Sixte Ugolini publicly condemned the police's kidnapping of his client, Mohamed Chérif, a Moroccan citizen with legal status. Shortly thereafter, the general public discovered a dormant warehouse located in the port of Arenc that had been covertly used by the prefecture to detain non-nationals (primarily Algerians) awaiting deportation for more than a decade, outside of any established legal framework. The affair foreshadowed the establishment of administrative detention centers, which were brought into law in October 1981.

La Joliette (French pronunciation: ​[la ʒɔljɛt]; Occitan: La Jolieta) is a neighbourhood of the 2nd arrondissement of Marseille located at the start of the autonomous port of Marseille.

La Vieille Charité is a former almshouse, now functioning as a museum and cultural centre, situated in the heart of the old Panier quarter of Marseille in the south of France. Constructed between 1671 and 1749 in the Baroque style to the designs of the architect Pierre Puget, it comprises four ranges of arcaded galleries in three storeys surrounding a space with a central chapel surmounted by an ovoid dome.

Marseille Cathedral (French: Cathédrale Sainte-Marie-Majeure de Marseille or Cathédrale de la Major) is a Roman Catholic cathedral, and a national monument of France, located in Marseille. It has been a basilica minor since 1896. It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Marseille (formerly the Diocese of Marseille until its elevation in 1948).

Porte d'Aix (also known as the Porte Royale) is a triumphal arch in Marseille, in the south of France, marking the old entry point to the city on the road from Aix-en-Provence. The classical design by Michel-Robert Penchaud was inspired by the triumphal arches of the Roman Empire. The Porte d’Aix was initially conceived in 1784 to honour Louis XVI and to commemorate the Peace of Paris (1783) that ended the American Revolutionary War. Following the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy in 1814–15, the project was resumed in 1823, now to commemorate French victories in the Spanish Expedition, notably at the Battle of Trocadero, August 31, 1823. It was eventually completed in 1839, with a more general theme of victory.
