St George's Priory, Thetford

Thetford Castle is a medieval motte and bailey castle in the market town of Thetford in the Breckland area of Norfolk, England. The first castle in Thetford, a probable 11th-century Norman ringwork called Red Castle, was replaced in the 12th century by a much larger motte and bailey castle on the other side of the town. This new castle was largely destroyed in 1173 by Henry II, although the huge motte, the second largest man-made mound in England, remained intact. The motte, recognised as a scheduled monument, now forms part of a local park, and the remains are known variously as Castle Hill, Castle Mound and Military Parade.

The River Thet is a river in Norfolk, England and is a tributary of the River Little Ouse.It rises in Breckland with sources in Deopham Green and Rockland All Saints and joins the Little Ouse in Thetford after flowing approximately southwest. The primary sources for its various small tributaries include the calcareous valley fen SSSIs Swangey Fen, Old Buckenham Fen, Middle Harling Fen and Kenninghall and Banham Fens with Quidenham Mere.Carr woodland is also a prevalent habitat throughout the floodplain where open wetlands have been invaded by scrub. The underlying geology is clay/loam over chalk for the easternmost parts of the river's course and sand/gravel over chalk for the majority of the river.

The Dad's Army Museum is a museum located in Cage Lane in Thetford in Norfolk, England, dedicated to the popular BBC comedy series Dad's Army. Many of the outdoor locations were filmed in the local area. The museum is housed in the old fire station at the rear of Thetford Guildhall, which itself stood in for Walmington-on-Sea Town Hall in several of the episodes. It is run by volunteers who, throughout the year, attend many 1940s events in East Anglia with Jones' Van.

The Black Horse is a grade II listed pub in Thetford, Norfolk, England. It dates from the Mid 18th century and is constructed of flint, clunch and brick, with a colour wash over plaster, and a roof of black-glazed pantiles.It was modified and enlarged in the 19th and 20th centuries when the rooms on the ground floor were knocked into one.Beer was brewed on the premises until the 1860s (latterly by the proprietor, a Mr John W. Tyrell), when the pub was sold to Bidwell and Company, then Thetford's largest brewers. Between 1928 and 1936, the publican was G Sweeney. As of 2015, the pub is run as a free house. The building was given grade II designation by English Heritage (now Historic England), protecting it from unauthorised development or demolition, in March 1971.

The Charles Burrell Museum is a museum in Thetford in Norfolk, England, dedicated to steam power and steam transport. The museum opened in 1991 in the former Paint Shop of Charles Burrell & Sons, which is grade II listed, on Minstergate in Thetford. The collections tell the stories of the Charles Burrell Works, a company which at one time employed 350 people who worked there until the business closed in 1928, and the steam-powered engines they produced and which sold around the world. Displays include a Charles Burrell and Sons Ltd steam roller, traction engine and a Showmans Road Locomotive, parts of Burrell engines, factory machinery, agricultural equipment and items linked to the Burrell Family. The original plans to many of the Burrell engines are held privately by the Palmer family of Haughley in Suffolk through the marriage of Mrs Annie Palmer to Mr Thomas Doran JP, Mayor of Thetford, whom with his brother founded Doran Bros of Thetford at Haughley House in Croxton Road, Thetford.The museum is open on Saturdays with free admission and is run by volunteers.

Thetford is a market town and civil parish in the Breckland district of Norfolk, England. It is on the A11 road between Norwich and London, just east of Thetford Forest. The civil parish, covering an area of 29.55 km2 (11.41 sq mi), in 2015 had a population of 24,340.There has been a settlement at Thetford since the Iron Age, and parts of the town predate the Norman Conquest; Thetford Castle was established shortly thereafter. Roger Bigod founded the Cluniac Priory of St Mary in 1104, which became the largest and most important religious institution in Thetford. The town was badly hit by the dissolution of the monasteries, including the castle's destruction, but was rebuilt in 1574 when Elizabeth I established a town charter. After World War II, Thetford became an "overspill town", taking people from London, as a result of which its population increased substantially. Thetford was the headquarters of Tulip International, large-scale manufacturers of bacon, beef and pork until its closure in 2010. Thetford railway station is served by the Breckland line and is one of the best surviving pieces of 19th century railway architecture in East Anglia.

Holy Sepulchre Church, Thetford was a medieval monastic house in Thetford, Norfolk. The ruined nave of this 14th-century church are the only surviving remains in England of a priory of Canons of the Holy Sepulchre, who followed the Rule of Saint Augustine and aided pilgrims to Christ's tomb. It was later used as a barn, and is a Grade I listed building.

Thetford Priory is a Cluniac monastic house in Thetford, Norfolk, England. It should not be confused with the Dominican Friary of Blackfriars, Thetford that later became part of Thetford Grammar School. One of the most important East Anglian monasteries, Thetford Priory was founded in 1103 by Roger Bigod, 1st Earl of Norfolk, and dedicated to Our Lady. In the 13th century, the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared in a vision to locals requesting the addition to the site of a Lady Chapel. During its construction, the old statue of her on the site was discovered to have a hollow in its head concealing saints' relics, and became a magnet for pilgrims.

Thetford railway station is on the Breckland line in the east of England, serving the town of Thetford, Norfolk. The line runs between Cambridge in the west and Norwich in the east. Thetford is situated between Brandon and Harling Road, 93 miles 50 chains (150.7 km) from London Liverpool Street via Ely. The station is managed by Greater Anglia, which operates most of the services, typically one to two trains per hour in either direction. East Midlands Railway operates a regular service between Norwich and Liverpool Lime Street via Nottingham and Manchester Piccadilly. It is the nearest station to the Center Parcs holiday village at Elveden Forest, approximately five miles to the west.
