Wilberfoss Priory

Wilberfoss is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated on the north side of the A1079 approximately 8 miles (13 km) east of York city centre and 11 miles (18 km) north-west of Market Weighton. According to the 2011 UK census, Wilberfoss parish had a population of 1,866, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 1,855. In 1823 inhabitants in the village numbered 335. Occupations included fifteen farmers, some of whom were land owners, three shopkeepers, two wheelwrights, two blacksmiths, a butcher, a bricklayer, a corn miller, a baker, a tailor, a wholesale brewer, and the landlords of the True Briton, Horse Shoes, and Waggon and Horses public houses. Also listed was one gentleman, a school teacher, and a perpetual curate. Baines' History, Directory & Gazetteer of the County of York states that the "ancient and respectable" family of Wilberfoss resided here from the Norman Conquest to 1710, after which the family estate and mansion was sold. A family descendant was William Wilberforce, and the Wilberforce family still provided patronage for the parish living. Wilberfoss Priory, a house of Benedictine nuns, was founded at Wilberfoss by Elias de Cotton during the reign of Henry II, which at the time of the Suppression of the Monasteries by Henry VIII had a yearly value of £26. 10s. 8d. The priory lay just to the north of St John's Church; nothing of it remains today.In 1967 the parish Church of St John the Baptist was designated a Grade I listed building and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England. Other notable buildings include the Grade II listed Old Vicarage (circa late 18th century) on Main Street, mentioned in Pevsner's account of the village for its remarkable dentilled timber eaves cornice and raised curved gables on shapes kneelers and Villa Farm also of Main Street.

Newton upon Derwent or Newton on Derwent is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 5 miles (8 km) west of Pocklington and 1 mile (1.6 km) south of the A1079 at Wilberfoss. It lies 1 mile east of the River Derwent after which the village takes its name. According to the 2011 UK census, Newton upon Derwent parish had a population of 315, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 282.

Catton is a civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated 6 miles (10 km) to the north-west of the market town of Pocklington and covering an area of 1,233 hectares (3,050 acres). It lies on the east bank of the River Derwent that forms the boundary with the unitary authority of the City of York. The A1079 road crosses the river just north of Kexby Old Bridge which is designated a Grade II* listed building in and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England.The civil parish is formed by the villages of High Catton and Low Catton. According to the 2011 UK census, Catton parish had a population of 348, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 284.

Fangfoss railway station was a station on the York to Beverley Line in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It opened on 4 October 1847 and served the village of Fangfoss. It closed on 3 January 1959 and much of the site is now occupied by a caravan park.In 1987 the station was given a Grade II listed building status.

High Catton is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Catton, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 6 miles (10 km) north-west of the market town of Pocklington and about 1 mile (1.6 km) south of the village of Stamford Bridge. The village of Low Catton and the River Derwent are 1 mile to the west. In 1931 the parish had a population of 174. From 1866 High Catton was a civil parish in its own right, on 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Low Catton to form "Catton". In 1823 High Catton was in the civil parish of Low Catton. Population at the time was 198. Occupations included eleven farmers, a tailor, a joiner & carpenter, a wheelwright, and the landlord of Woodpecker Lass public house. There were also three yeomen. Two carriers operated between the village and York once a week.

Kexby Old Bridge is a historic bridge in Yorkshire, in England. The bridge crosses the River Derwent, linking Kexby in the City of York with Catton in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It lies on the main route from York to Kingston upon Hull, and a ferry at the location was first recorded in 1315. In the 1420s, a three-arch bridge was constructed by Nicholas Blackburn, although the ferry continued to operate.Because of the importance of the road, Roger Tresuer rebuilt the bridge from 1648 to 1650, and an inscription on it states that it was built in 1650. Despite this, the Victoria County History claims that part of the earlier bridge may be incorporated in the present structure, including a coat of arms of the Ughtred family. In 1764, the road was made a turnpike, and much work was done to the bridge over the remainder of the century, with an inscription noting repairs in 1778. In the 20th century, the road was widened and straightened, but in 1960, a new concrete bridge was built as a bypass, forming part of the A1079 road.The bridge was damaged in the Boxing Day floods of 2015, and in 2017 major defects were found in it. It was then closed to motorised traffic. A steel arch frame was added to stabilise the western arch, and in 2020 and 2021, the central pier was partly rebuilt, and other work conducted to restore the bridge. However, it was decided that it would not reopen to motor vehicles.The bridge is constructed of stone and brick, and has three arches, with the piers each having a pointed cutwater. The ground under the eastern arch is usually dry. Its parapet has four courses of stone. It is a Grade II* listed building and a scheduled monument.

Sutton Bridge is a historic bridge in Yorkshire, in England. The bridge crosses the River Derwent, linking Elvington in the City of York with Sutton-upon-Derwent in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It forms part of the B1228 road. A bridge at the location was first recorded in 1396, and it may have replaced an earlier ferry.The current bridge probably dates from the late 17th century. It is built of Magnesian Limestone, and has two arches. The central pier has pointed cutwaters. The parapet is built of three courses of stone, and there are pedestrian refuges on either side at the mid-point of the bridge. As implied, there is no proper pedestrian path on this bridge but the traffic lights do allow for a 5-10 second gap.The bridge was grade II* listed in 1986. In 2010, it was badly damaged by a lorry, which was never traced. It closed for a month for repairs, during which it was strengthened, and the width between the parapets was increased. In 2013, a ban on heavy goods vehicles using the bridge was considered in order to make it safer for pedestrians, but the plan was rejected, while various proposed safety measures were also rejected as unenforceable or unlikely to prove effective.

Sutton upon Derwent is a small village and civil parish on the River Derwent in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, approximately 8 miles (13 km) to the south-east of York, and less than a mile from the larger village of Elvington, which unlike Sutton, is included in the City of York boundary. Further down the B1228 is the village of Melbourne. According to the 2011 UK census the population of the parish was 594, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 575, which itself represents an increase of around 50 per cent from 1991, largely due to new houses having been built in the village. Before this the population fluctuated from 274 in 1801 to 417 in 1831 and to 270 in 1931. Although Roman artefacts have been found in the Sutton upon Derwent area, suggesting a possible settlement, no conclusive evidence exists. The first likely reference to the existence of a settlement was recorded by Bede in the 8th century. The village was later mentioned in the 11th century Domesday Book. The village reflects a close association with the Jervis family, holders of the title of Viscount St Vincent since 1735, due to the Manor passing into the hands of Carnegie Robert John Jervis, 3rd Viscount St Vincent in 1857. The family held the Manor until it was sold to the Crown in 1947 and 1948. Manifestations of this association include: the large marble tablet erected in the village church, St Michael's, commemorating the death of John Edward Leveson Jervis, 4th Viscount St. Vincent, in the battle of Abou Klea in 1885; the naming of one of the village public houses, the St. Vincent Arms; and the naming of local streets, St. Vincent's Close and Jervis Court. In 1967 the church was designated a Grade I listed building and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England. Sutton Bridge, Yorkshire, across the River Derwent, is Grade II* listed.The Old Rectory is a Grade II Listed house built in 1854 by J. B. and W. Atkinson.Facilities in the village include a primary school, village hall, tennis club, post office and a public house. Sutton upon Derwent is home to Woodhouse Grange Cricket Club, winners of the National Village Cricket Knockout in 1995, and runners up in 1999. Both finals were played at Lord's. The ground is located approximately one mile north of the village.

Kexby is a village and civil parish in the unitary authority of the City of York in North Yorkshire, England. It lies on the River Derwent and on the A1079 road about 5 miles (8 km) east of York not far from the East Riding of Yorkshire border. The village was part of the East Riding of Yorkshire until 1974. It was part of the Selby District in North Yorkshire from 1974 until 1996. Since then it has been part of the City of York unitary authority.According to the 2001 census the parish had a population of 194, it increased to 231 at the 2011 Census. In 1823 Kexby had a population of 149. Occupations included ten farmers and the landlord of the Coach and Horses public house.The route of the White Rose Way, a long-distance walk from Leeds to Scarborough, North Yorkshire passes through. Kexby Old Bridge over the River Derwent is a Scheduled Ancient Monument with a Grade II listing. Once a toll bridge, it was built in 1650 by Sir Roger Tresuer.Former Emmerdale actor Frazer Hines has a stud farm here.

Royal Air Force Full Sutton or RAF Full Sutton is a former Royal Air Force station located 2 miles (3.2 km) south east of Stamford Bridge, East Riding of Yorkshire and 4.7 miles (7.6 km) north west of Pocklington, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The base did not open until May 1944, and so was the last airfield built for Bomber Command.

Full Sutton Circuit is a former motorsport venue operated at RAF Full Sutton in Yorkshire, England. RAF Full Sutton was still in use as an operational Royal Air Force station, when in 1958 permission was obtained from the Air Ministry and appears to have been organised entirely by the British Racing and Sports Car Club. It would appear that the BRSCC organised four race meetings at the Yorkshire track. The first meeting took place in April, when it snowed, causing Jim Clark to go off in the Scott-Watson Porsche; the car narrowly missed a flag marshal who had not been warned by his fellow flag marshal of the impending danger as he departed. The meeting on 27 September saw a six-race programme for Formula III racing cars amongst others. All races were over 10 laps, with the exception of the saloon cars who raced over five laps instead, and the main event of the day, started at 16:00 with a Le Mans start and ran over 16 laps for the Sports Racing Cars of unlimited capacity. In this no less than 17 Lotus Elevens were entered, all powered by 1098cc Coventry Climax engines with the exception of Innes Ireland’s example which had a 1460cc Climax power unit. It was the first airfield track in England to be lapped at more than 100 mph by a sports car, the car in question being a Jaguar D-type entered and owned by Border Reivers and driven by Jim Clark. The calculations in respect of the fastest lap were made in the pub after the meeting and initially showed a speed in excess of 120 mph, but when the alcohol and euphoria wore off the true figure was established. The circuit was Britain's longest at 3.2 miles (5.1 km), however the circuit was some distance from centres of population and when Rufforth Circuit became available the BRSCC moved there for convenience.

HM Prison Millsike is a prison currently under construction in York, Yorkshire, England. It is due to open in 2025. And will be operated on a 10 year contact by Mitie Care & Custody. Construction of a new, unnamed prison began in November 2021 by construction company Kier. The construction of the new prison was part of the governments New Prisons Programme, following the construction of Five Wells Prison and HMP Fosse Way in Glen Parva. HMP Millsike, in addition to HMP Five Wells and HMP Fosse Way, was built using PCE's Secure Prison platform-DfMA build system. This offers many benefits, such as offsite manufacturing and standardised components, creating a more sustainable, repeatable build system that aligns to the Ministry of Justice's Net Zero Carbon ambitions. The site is opposite HMP Full Sutton and is due to open in 2025. The new prison will hold approximately 1,500 prisoners and will be the first prison in the UK to run solely on electricity generated through the use of solar panels and heat pumps, allowing the prison to use approximately a quarter of the energy needed to heat historic prisons, such as HMP Wormwood Scrubs. On 27 February 2023, Prisons Minister, Damian Hinds revealed the name of the prison as HM Prison Millsike. The prison was named after the local river Millsike Beck, that runs adjacent to the prison. After a six-week consultation, a panel of Ministry of Justice representatives, as well as local residents to the prison created a shortlist that was presented to then Deputy Prime Minister, Dominic Raab, who agreed upon the name.
