Kinkeadtown is a historically African American section of Lexington, Kentucky. It was established near the home of George Blackburn Kinkead (former Secretary of State of Kentucky), several years after the American Civil War. The land was subdivided by Kinkead in 1870 and sold exclusively to African Americans. In 1880 it was populated by about 20 families and grew to include over 300 residents. Cities had growing populations of African Americans during the era. Kinkead's home is now the Living Arts and Science Center. An archaeological report on the area was published in 1996.Many of the original homes in Kinkeadtown were destroyed in a redevelopment effort during the 1990s. Lilia Garrison (born 1908), a resident of the area, was interviewed for an oral history project. Mary Edna Berry, another resident, was also interviewed in 1989. Goodloetown was another area of Lexington developed for African Americans and named for the developer, a nephew of Cassius Clay.

The Kentucky Association (also known as the Kentucky Racing Association) was formed on July 23, 1826, to promote the breeding and racing of Thoroughbred horses in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky. The "oldest turf organization in America", it was founded by a group of prominent locals, who included planter and politician Henry Clay, Jesse Bledsoe, Dr. Elisha Warfield, and Thomas F. Marshall. Between 1828 and 1834, the Association acquired 65 acres of land in an area of the city of Lexington, Kentucky that today is the east end of 5th Street at Race Street. On the property, the Association built a one-mile dirt racetrack with grandstand and stables to host Thoroughbred flat racing events.

African Cemetery No. 2, also known as The Cemetery of the Union Benevolent Society No. 2, is a historic burial site located in Lexington, Kentucky, United States.

James "Soup" Perkins (1879–1911) was born in Lexington, Kentucky, the son of former slaves. He and his entire family were involved in horse racing, training, and working in the stables. Perkins was the second youngest jockey ever to win the Kentucky Derby and the winningest jockey in America in 1895. At the peak of his career he earned $10,000 per year, the equivalent of $346,000 in 2022 US dollars and was written about in newspapers throughout the United States and Canada. He died at the age of thirty-three from a massive heart attack while working in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

The Living Arts & Science Center, formerly the George B. (Blackburn) Kinkead House, is an art and education center housed in an historic mansion in Lexington, Kentucky. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was donated to the center by the Kinkead family in 1981.The original two-story antebellum mansion is believed to have been designed by Major Thomas Lewinski, a British-born architect, engineer and teacher of foreign languages. It is a Greek revival style building, which was sympathetically enlarged during the Civil War period, with Italianate features. The dwelling was further enlarged c. 1853, with the construction of a third story attic.

The Episcopal Burying Ground and Chapel (also known as the Old Episcopal Burying Ground (OEBG)) is located at 251 East Third Street, in Lexington, Kentucky. The land was purchased in 1832 by Christ Church as a burial ground for its parishioners. The cemetery became extremely important during the 1833 cholera epidemic, during which one-third of the congregation died. The burial ground also contains a small chapel that was built around 1867 and is thought to have been designed by notable Lexington architect John McMurtry. The small Carpenter Gothic chapel later became a sexton's cottage. In 1976, the burying ground and former chapel were added to the National Register of Historic Places.The only person of color buried in the OEBG, is Rev. London Ferrill, a former enslaved man who came to Kentucky in 1811 after the death of his enslaver. In 1821, he was ordained by the Elkhorn Baptist Association. Rev. Ferrell ministered to the black population of Lexington at the First African Church, now the First African Baptist Church. It was founded by Rev. Peter Durrett, also known as "Uncle Peter" and "Old Captain", an enslaved man of Rev. Joseph Craig, who came to Kentucky with the Baptist members of The Travelling Church from Upper Spotsylvania, Virginia in 1781. The cemetery is not regularly open to the public, but private tours can be given by appointment.

The Russell School (1895–2003) is a former public school located in the Northside neighborhood of Lexington, Kentucky. From 1895 until roughly the mid-1960s, the school was segregated and served African American students. It is a listed as a National Register of Historic Place since April 5, 2006, for its association with African American education in Lexington, Kentucky, between 1953 and 1956.

The Loudoun House, located in Lexington, Kentucky, is considered one of the largest and finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture in the state. Designed by New York architect Alexander Jackson Davis, the house was built in 1851 for Francis Key Hunt (1817–1879), who was named after his mother's cousin, Francis Scott Key.The home was built on 50 acres of land given to Hunt and his wife, Julia Warfield, by her parents upon their marriage. Following the death of his father during a cholera epidemic, Hunt inherited more than a million dollars and set to building the Loudoun House. Inspired by the W. C. H. Waddell mansion on Murray Hill in New York City, Hunt wrote to A. J. Davis, who designed a castellated Gothic Revival villa for Hunt after a brief correspondence. Hunt hired Lexington builder John McMurtry to construct the home. The project was expected to cost $10,000, but wound up costing three times that amount and taking four years to complete. He named the home "Loudoun" in honor of the song "The Bells of Loudon", his wife's favorite. Loudoun House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is one of the five surviving castellated Gothic Revival villas designed by Davis in the United States.The house currently houses the Lexington Art League.

The United States Post Office and Court House is a courthouse of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky located in Lexington, Kentucky. Built in 1934, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

Hamilton College was a private women's college in Lexington, Kentucky, operating from 1869 to 1932. It was taken over in 1903 by Transylvania University and operated as an affiliated junior college until its closing during the Great Depression.

It offers 46 major programs, as well as dual-degree engineering programs, and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Its medical program has graduated 8,000 physicians since 1859.Transylvania's name, meaning "across the woods" in Latin, stems from the university's founding in the heavily forested region of western Virginia known as the Transylvania Colony, which existed briefly between 1775 and 1776 in south and western Kentucky.It is the alma mater of two U.S. vice presidents, two U.S. Supreme Court justices, 50 U.S. senators, 101 U.S. representatives, 36 U.S. governors, 34 U.S. ambassadors, and the Confederate president, making it a large producer of U.S. statesmen.
