William Morris Society

Kelmscott House is Grade II* listed Georgian brick mansion at 26 Upper Mall in Hammersmith, overlooking the River Thames. Built in about 1785, it was the London home of English textile designer, artist, writer and socialist William Morris from 1878 to 1896.Originally called The Retreat, Morris renamed it after the Oxfordshire village of Kelmscott, where he had lived at Kelmscott Manor from June 1871. Nearby, Morris began his "adventure in printing" with his private press, the Kelmscott Press, which he started at 16 Upper Mall in 1891.

Sussex House is a Grade II* listed house at 12–14 Upper Mall, Hammersmith, London W6 9TA.It is just south of the Great West Road, and was built in about 1726.This building is listed under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 as amended for its special architectural or historic interest, since 1985.The house features an old brick boundary wall on the north and east sides.

Stamford Brook was a tributary of the Tideway stretch of the River Thames in west London supplied by three headwaters. Historically used as an irrigation ditch or dyke the network of small watercourses had four lower courses and mouths.

High Bridge (also known as Bishop's Bridge) was a footbridge that crossed Hammersmith Creek in Hammersmith, London. First referenced in 1541, the bridge was rebuilt several times, notably in 1712, 1751, 1820 and 1837. The bridge was destroyed in 1944 by a flying bomb. Today, the bridge is still marked by a raised hump in the gardens and a flowerbed in Furnival Gardens.

Hammersmith was a civil parish and metropolitan borough in London, England. It was formed as a civil parish in 1834 from the chapelry of Hammersmith that had existed in the ancient parish of Fulham, Middlesex since 1631. The parish was grouped with Fulham as the Fulham District from 1855 until 1886, when separate parish administration was restored. In 1889 it became part of the County of London and in 1900 it became a metropolitan borough. It included Hammersmith, Wormwood Scrubs, Old Oak Common and Shepherd's Bush. In 1965 it was abolished and became the northern part of the London Borough of Hammersmith, since 1979 renamed the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.

Hammersmith was a civil parish in London, England, from 1834 to 1965. The hamlet of Hammersmith in the parish of Fulham had been governed by the Hammersmith Vestry following the construction of the chapel of St Paul's in 1629–1631. The Hammersmith Parish Act 1834 made formal the separation from Fulham. The parish was recombined with Fulham as the Fulham District for civil purposes from 1855 to 1886 and for the New Poor Law from 1845 to 1889. In 1900 the parish was superseded for local government by the Metropolitan Borough of Hammersmith. The parish continued to be used for election of boards of guardians until 1930 and was abolished in 1965. Its former area now forms the northern part of the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.

Latymer Upper School is a coeducational public school in Hammersmith, London, England, between King Street and the River Thames. The school has approximately 1,200 pupils, and is highly selective, accepting under 10% of applicants (in 2016); most are admitted through examination and interview to Upper School at the age of eleven, with some entering into the Sixth Form at 16. The school can be traced to a charity school for boys founded by the English merchant Edward Latymer in 1624. It moved to its present site in 1863 and in the mid-20th century became a direct grant grammar school. It has been independent since the abolition of that system of funding in the 1970s. It remained single-sex until Sixth-Form admissions were opened to girls in 1996; the remainder of the school became coeducational in the first decade of the 21st century. Latymer has been ranked consistently among the leading schools in the country academically. This is on the merit of its position in the national GCSE and A level examination performance tables combined with one of the highest Oxford and Cambridge acceptance rates of any secondary school or college, and it is one of the top schools for the arts and sport. As of 2020 the Sixth Form of 340 is one of the largest in London and offers forty academic courses as well as extra-curricular activities.
